We are back with another Fantasy Premier League season for the 21/22 calendar year, and FPL managers far and wide are busy tinkering with their Gameweek 1 teams, designing the inch-perfect draft that optimizes the best players from the broad selection of assets to choose from.
Previously, we took a look at why Everton assets were a good team to target in the initial few weeks. In this blog, we will focus on another team that FPL managers could set their targets on during the team-building stage before GW1: Brighton and Hove Albion F.C.
Why Brighton Assets?
In the 20/21 season, Brighton toyed with FPL managers as the kings of underperforming xG. Despite a decent stretch of games where they were expected to run riot with the attack, they produced underwhelming results against the desires of many managers.
Graham Potter returns as the manager once again for Brighton, who we should expect to be highly motivated to make a charge for a top 10 after finishing 16th in the 20/21 season.
Here are some of the key points for why Brighton FPL assets could be worth considering for the initial few weeks:
1. Fixtures
The biggest factor in favor of Brighton has to be their decent run of fixtures to start off with.
From the get go, Brighton face Burnley, Watford, Everton, Brentford, Leicester, Crystal Palace, Arsenal, and Norwich in their first 8 fixtures. Aside from Leicester and Arsenal possibly posing real challenges, the general run of fixtures is favorable for Brighton, including facing all three newly-promoted sides.

2. Value
Let’s take a look at some of the prices of the popular picks from the Brighton squad, in comparison to their prices last season:
Player | Position | Price 20/21 | Price 21/22 |
Robert Sanchez | GK | 4.5 | 4.5 |
Lewis Dunk | DEF | 4.8 | 5.0 |
Joel Veltman | DEF | 4.3 | 4.5 |
Tariq Lamptey | DEF | 4.6 | 4.5 |
Leandro Trossard | MID | 6.0 | 6.5 |
Pascal Groß | MID | 5.8 | 6.0 |
Yves Bissouma | MID | 4.4 | 4.5 |
Neal Maupay | FWD | 5.8 | 6.5 |
Danny Welbeck | FWD | 5.5 | 6.0 |
Generally, the prices seem reasonable. No crazy outrageous prices here.
The defense presents enticing budget options, including Lamptey and Sanchez, who could be nice budget enablers for you to spend cash in other parts of your squad.
3. Brighton FPL- Formation and Tactics
Potter liked to switch up formations frequently according to the opponent they faced. He is known for his tendency to try different formations, but, in general, he likes to play a flexible, possession-based game.
With this in mind, I predict Potter to run with the following starting XI in a 3-4-1-2:
Welbeck was given more playing time towards the end of the 20/21 season, which saw him get more involved in the attack with Maupay and Trossard. Trossard plays a more attacking role, which could see him get more attacking returns.
The potential attacking returns from Dan Burn and Tariq Lamptey, both of which are categorized as defenders in FPL, could be huge. Before his season-ending injury, Lamptey was an FPL favorite, constantly bolting up the right wing to get involved in the attack.
Brighton are a defense that were third-best for big chances conceded last season, only after Manchester City and Chelsea. This makes the Brighton goalkeeper and defensive options very appealing.
With the recent signing of new goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen, managers are concerned about the security of Sanchez’s spot in goal. While we cannot be 100% certain, I think it would be in Potter’s best interest to play his most experienced goalkeeper. FPL managers should be able to back Sanchez to start the first game against Southampton.

Brighton FPL- Players to Target
If I were to narrow it down to three Brighton assets to possibly consider, here are the three I would go for:
1. Tariq Lamptey
Position: DEF Price: £4.5
Before his injury spell, Lamptey was third for most touches in the penalty area of all defenders. He was also the most fouled defender in the box, a testament to how often he gets involved in the attack, causing all sorts of issues for the opposing defense.
His heat map shows his heavy involvement in the attack, while also fulfilling his defense duties. If Potter plays him as a right wing-back in a midfield 4, we could see him run rampant with the returns, provided he remains fit.
And, at a ridiculously cheap price of £4.5, he is an incredible budget option in defense.

2. Lewis Dunk
Position: DEF Price: £5.0
The reliable skipper should be an assured starter in Potter’s starting XI.
Although he is £0.5 more expensive than Lamptey, he offers tremendous goal threat. In fact, Dunk had the second highest number of headed attempts for all defenders, only after Maguire. And, if that’s not enough, he was the joint-highest top goal scorer of all defenders, scoring 5 goals, 4 of which were goals scored with his head.

3. Danny Welbeck
Position: FWD Price: £6.0
From the graphic below, Welbeck registered 36 shots in total, 31 of which were in the box. His goal involvement in the last four Gameweeks (34-38) last season fared the best out of all Brighton attackers.
I expect him to be an option in Potter’s attacking arsenal, and at an affordable price of £6.0, he could flourish against the first few opposition teams Brighton face.

Conclusion
That concludes my analysis of Brighton as a team to target for the first couple of Gameweeks. With their appealing fixtures, decent value in the prices of standout players, and the possible potential that Potter’s tactics may have on the squad, Brighton FPL assets could maybe make a few spots on your GW1 drafts.
