Ever wondered how managers finish in those top spots? Or if their strategy is different to yours? Well today, I have a chat with Harvey Ransome, who finished 4th Overall, and 2nd in England in the recently concluded 2020/21 FPL Season. We will discuss how his season has gone, and whether he has done anything different this season to previous. Hope you learn something and let’s get into it!
What first got you into FPL?
In the 09/10 season, I started my first FPL campaign as a 9-year-old. I was competing in a 1v1 competition against my dad, where bragging rights were on the line; but nothing else other than that.
How have you fared in previous seasons?
In previous years, the best overall points I’ve managed was 2,190 in the 19/20 season, where I finished around 300k. My lowest ever total featured in my first season with just 1,751 points, so my overall tally steadily grew as I gained experience with age!
What did you do differently this season to previous ones?
The main tactic I changed this season was resisting the temptation of spending -4 points for an extra transfer just because of a favorable fixture or Double Gameweek (or even Triple Gameweek for Manchester United this season in GW35). This took some doing and many footballing nights hiding behind the sofa while watching a player you fantasized over racking up the points but it paid off in the end for me!

What were your Key Transfers this Season?
I’d say the transfers worth mentioning are Emi Martínez or Bruno Fernandes: but I think the most influential transfer I made was Harry Kane. Despite being ineligible for the second game I triple captained him for in GW32 which restricted his points to 12 (36 with the triple captaincy), he was Mr Consistent throughout the season for me which is reflected in him getting the most assists and goals in the Premier League.

What was your Captaincy Plan during the 2020/21 FPL Season?
My captaincy plan throughout the season was to give players who took penalties and also were high on the ICT index analysis. This meant that I predominantly captained Mo Salah, Bruno Fernandes and Harry Kane while occasionally moving to Gündoğan (while De Bruyne was injured) and Bamford as they also were the favourited penalty takers for their teams.

What was your Chip Strategy during the 2020/21 FPL Season??
The Chip Strategy I deployed involved saving them until the right moment and remaining patient. This resulted in me using my second Wildcard in GW31, Triple Captain in GW32, and my Bench Boost in GW35. The Triple Captain and Bench Boost chips were always going to be played on a Double/Triple Gameweek in order to maximize the points potential.

Do you recall your Best & Worst Gameweek?
So my best Gameweek happened when I played my Bench Boost in GW35; earning 122 points. Unfortunately, my worst Gameweek occurred in GW10 where I only accumulated 42 points; this was primarily because Watkins missed a penalty and I only had two players that returned (captain Salah with 6 points and Fernandes with 10).

How does it feel to be 4th in the World?
I’m incredibly pleased with my position but from a personal point of view, I always speculate on what I could’ve done better and finished on if a few other moments went my way (for example, making the bold move of captaining Mané on the very last Gameweek which led to Michael Coone taking the top spot) and then I could’ve placed into the top 3! Hindsight is a wonderful thing I suppose.
If you had to credit finishing 4th to one thing, what would it be?
I would mainly give the credit to the ICT analysis. The breaking down of Influence, Creativity and Threat really allowed me to target the right players who had the highest potential of points (for example, Watkins being the most threatening forward allowed me to gain a few differential points on my rivals when the threat turned into consistent goal contributions towards the latter stage of the season).
(The ICT Index is a football index that has developed to give a verdict on a player as an FPL asset. Data looks at 3 areas: Influence, Creativity, Threat. Influence looks at how a player could directly or indirectly affect the outcome of the fixture. Creativity assesses player performances in terms of producing opportunities for others. Threat looks at a player’s threat on goal. When looking at these values, it can help you to discover a hidden gem.)

What is your Plan for Next Season?
My plan for next season is to take it seriously from the first whistle on GW1 and aim for an even higher finish if it’s possible! I only began to take it seriously this year as soon as I broke into the top 100 in GW23. By this, I mean creating an Excel Spreadsheet which allowed me to look into players’ future fixtures and potential Double Gameweeks with their rescheduled games which played a vital part in my decision-making for the Wildcard I played in GW31.
What Lessons did you Learn this Season?
Some lessons I learned this season revolve around being able to take the risks or lose the chances; especially on the subject of captaincy. This annoyingly became the determining factor on the last Gameweek as I decided to stick with the most-captained player in Mo Salah and play it safe rather than going for the differential in Mané (only 6 players in the top 100 captained him in the final Gameweek).
