Euro Fantasy Football Captaincy ~ Changes and MD1 Captain Options

As the hectic 2020/21 FPL season came to an end, it’s time to start to embrace ourselves in the differences between FPL and EFF. One of, if not the biggest, changes is the captaincy mechanics. In order to help you guys out to conquer Europe and, consequently, your mini-leagues, in this article, I cover how you can make the best out of your Euro Fantasy Football captaincy picks.

How does captaincy work in Euro Fantasy Football?

How does captaincy work in Euro Fantasy Football?

So, let’s get started. As you have probably noticed, there are no vice-captains in the game. This is because you can have multiple captains during a game week. “How??”I hear you ask. After your chosen captain has played his game, you change the captaincy to any other player who hasn’t played yet.

However, not everything is great! If your captain doesn’t play and you forget to put the armband on someone else, the player gets substituted but no other player gets double points. This is something you should be very careful with!

What does the new captaincy rules change in Euro Fantasy Football

Cristiano Ronaldo scores 100th goal for Portugal | Daily Sabah

Much more than you’ve probably originally thought. This small change has a game-changing effect on the way we are used to picking captains.

Now, for example, the time the game is played might be a bigger factor than the predictability of the match or the quality of the opposition! Since you can change your armband mid-week, it’s going to be worth targeting the earlier kick-offs, regardless of how tough it might seem. There is nothing to lose in doing this and a lot to be won!

In order to understand this concept better, let’s look at how we could have best exploited it in an FPL game week, taking GW 37 as an example. In that “weekend” the main captaincy options were Bruno vs Fulham and Salah vs West Brom. Newcastle’s defensive weaknesses were the topic of the week in the FPL community but barely any players dared to gamble on Pep’s roulette. If we had this system in FPL, there was no reason why anyone would be afraid to gamble on a city attacker. This way maybe catching Torres’ monstrous haul.

Euro Fantasy Football Matchday 1: Captaincy Initial Thoughts

Now that the explanations are out of the way and you, reader, have begun to have an idea of how to best take advantage of this wonderful mechanic, let’s have an early look at how we can maximize our captain points in matchday 1.

Turkey vs Holland (4-2): Burak Yilmaz shines with a treble VIDEO | Football24 News English

Main games in MD1:

-Turkey vs Italy (11th June, 20:00);
-Belgium vs Russia (12th June 20:00);
-Spain vs Sweden(14th June 20:00);

These are, in my eyes, the games to target for captaincy, I’ll explain why. Turkey vs Italy is the hardest game to call, it will be without a doubt a really close match. If you read my first EFF thread on my Twitter you would have known that these are two teams that I think could potentially be dark horses and go far in the competition! As discussed previously, there is no reason why you shouldn´t take a punt on this game, Yilmaz, Chiesa, or Immobile could be great options to initially put your armband.

Don’t stress about this too much now, there will be more in-depth articles to come on this topic. This part of the article has the aim to give some ideas of how you could navigate the 1st set of games best.

If you weren’t happy with your initial captain points, Belgium could be the place to try your luck,in the very next day. The red devils, as they are called, were the best attack in the qualifiers, scoring 40. Speaking of the European qualifiers, they played Russia twice and won both times,4-1 and 3-1. So clearly this is not an even game, making Lukaku and KDB the standout captaincy options for this week.

Finally, if you don´t fancy Belgium’s golden generation to turn it on vs Russia, Luis Enrique’s men might be the place to look at. La Roja finished top of their group, beating Sweden to 1st place. A Spanish 3-0 win and a 1-1draw were the results of both games. Despite this not being one of Spain’s best recent teams, this is one of the best matchups of the game week.

If everything wrong and none of our captain picks performed as expected, Ronaldo vs Hungary is your last-minute shot of points. Portugal has one of the biggest squad depths in the competition and if they want to escape out of the “group of death” it´s mandatory they win this game!

Note: Don’t overuse the opportunity to change your captain. A total of 10 points is what I’d consider a solid captain pick, so if your player gets anything close or better than that it might be wiser to just take it and not fall for the temptation of an unlikely haul!
