Beginner’s Guide to EURO Fantasy: How to Play, Rules, Scoring and Tips

We all can’t wait for the Euros, and now with a Euro Fantasy game to go alongside it, what a Summer it’s going to be! With a few big differences to FPL, many managers may be confused when it comes to Game Day. Here, I will overview the Fantasy game, looking at the rules and points mechanism. Hopefully, after reading this, you can go and smash the game this Summer!

EURO Brief

If you have been living under a rock and don’t know what the Euros is, then let me explain. The tournament consists of 6 groups with 4 teams in each. Every team will play 3 games in the group, with the top 2 going through. Then the best 4 of the 6 3rd place teams will also qualify, with the tournament then going into KO stage. Starting at Last 16, each game will be a knockout game until the final, where we find out the Champion of European football.

EURO Fantasy Basics

EURO 2020 Fantasy Football works by matchdays. There are seven matchdays in total, corresponding to the three rounds of games in the group stage, plus the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

Your squad will comprise of 15 players:

  • 2 Goalkeepers
  • 5 Defenders
  • 5 Midfielders
  • 3 Forwards

The Budget for your squad is £100 million, moving up to £105 million from the Round of 16 onwards. Any viable formation (at least 3 at the back) can be played.

Like FPL, there is a limit of the number of players from each nation:

  • For the group stage, you can pick a maximum of three players from the same team
  • For the round of 16, you can pick a maximum of four players from the same team
  • For the quarter-finals, you can pick a maximum of five players from the same team
  • For the semi-finals, you can pick a maximum of six players from the same team
  • For the final, you can pick a maximum of eight players from the same team

How Captaincy works in Euro Fantasy

Applying the armband will double that players points for that Matchday. Once all games on a Matchday have finished, you can sub your captain or switch the armband to another player. The old captain’s total will no longer be doubled and the new captain’s total will be.

If your captain doesn’t play and you haven’t made Manual Subs, a player will come in but won’t take the armband, so no-one will score double points. When you have made Manual Subs, no-one will come in.

TIP: To best utilize captaincy, give the armband to someone playing on the first Matchday, then if they don’t score points, pass on to those who play later. Hence, keep a balanced squad for all Gamedays within a Matchday.

Manual Substitutions in Euro Fantasy

Manual Substitution in Euro Fantasy
Manual Substitution in Euro Fantasy

Unlike FPL, EURO Fantasy has Manual Subs. This means during a matchday, you can make subs within your squad. After all matches on 1 day have finished, you can makes subs up until the first game on the next day kicks off. You can:

  • Sub out Max 4 Players (none that have been sent off) and replace with Subs who haven’t played. New Sub’s points will be lost.
  • Change your captain to another player from your squad whose team are yet to play. Old captain’s points will be lost, new captain’s points will be doubled.

TIP: A key way to utilize the substitutions the best is to bench players who have fixtures late in the Matchday (i.e. Group E/F) so that if unfancied players score points early in the Matchday, you can hold their points. Hence, try have a squad that covers all Gamedays within a Matchday.

Automatic Substitutions in Euro Fantasy

Auto Subs still occur, as you can order your bench to prioritise players coming on. Key things to note:

  • Once you’ve made Manual Subs or Changed Captain, if players in your Starting XI don’t play, they won’t be automatically subbed out.
  • If you switch bench order after Matchday has started, this counts as a Manual Sub, so no Auto Subs will occur after this in the Matchday.

TIP: Order your bench before the 1st Gameday in a Matchday, so if you don’t make Manual Subs, the Subs that automatically come on have the highest points potential.

Transfers in Euro Fantasy

You will be given a certain number of Free Transfers per Matchday, and any further transfers to those will result in -4 from the Overall score. Managers will be provided with unlimited transfers up until Matchday 1, and between Matchday 3 & the Last 16. You can only roll a max of 1 transfer to the next Matchday in the groups, with no transfers being rolled in the Knockout Stages.

TIP: Use all transfers available, and don’t worry about rolling. You have 2 chips to get you through tough moments. In this format, never take a -4, there’s no need to lose points that will be hard to make up in this short format.

Chips in Euro Fantasy

The two chips available allow you to make unlimited transfers to your squad, with only one being played at a time. Many will wonder when best to play these, which will be an article I will be releasing very soon. They are:

  1. Wildcard – Unlimited transfers, keep the same squad after the Matchday deadline has passed. If you’ve made transfers then played your Wildcard, those transfers and points deductions will be removed.
  2. Limitless – Unlimited transfers, no budget restrictions! Squad returns to what it was before after the Matchday passes. Same transfer rules as Wildcard

TIP: Look out for our Chip Strategy article, coming out very soon. This will cover when best to play your Chips to maximize points.
