FPL GW 10 Captain Picks to consider ahead of GW 10 Deadline | ALLABOUTFPL

This blog is written by MJ aka @fplfanatix who finished last season with an OR 148 last season!
Hi all, I am back with another article, this time on a popular topic i.e. the best captaincy options for FPL GW 10. We all know by now, how crucial captaincy is in FPL and how it can make or break your GWs.

I will analyze the best captaincy options for FPL GW 10 and provide what I perceive as the best safe and differential captaincy option. Ownership of less than 10% (at the time of writing) will be considered for differential options.

So let’s jump straight in. The captaincy options listed below are in no particular order. Will rank them at the end of the article.

All stats taken from FFHUB

Jamie Vardy (£10.2m, TSB – 25.7%) vs Fulham (H)

Jamie Vardy FPL GW 10 Captain pick
Vardy is one of the best captain option for this week

One of the most popular captaincy options this GW and for good reason. Up against one of the PL whipping boys this term at home. Fulham were carved open by Everton multiple times at Craven Cottage last GW and I expect Leicester to knock a few past them as well.

Vardy typically outperforms his underlying stats, although he has posted some really good numbers last 5 GWs. He has taken 11 shots (9 inside the box) and 8 shots on targets. His 7 big chances and xG of 4.0 (NPxG of 2.46) are 2nd highest and only behind Bamford in the last 5 GWs. He also has made 4 key passes and created 2 big chances in this period.

He has 8 goals from 7 starts this season and is a striker with proven PL pedigree coming up against a poor defensive opposition. Fulham continue to leak goals with their xGC of 9.71 being 3rd worst amongst all teams in the last 5 GWs. They have conceded 31 shots on target (3rd worst) in the same period and 13 big chances (3rd worst).

Leicester are ranked 6th amongst all teams in terms of xG (8.38) in the last 5 GWs. I expect Vardy and Leicester to do well in this matchup (despite the blip vs Liverpool) and Vardy offers for me one of the best captaincy potential this GW.

Bruno Fernandes (£10.8m, TSB – 36.5%) vs Southampton (A)

Bruno Fernandes FPL GW 10 Captain pick
Man in form

Popularly known as ‘Penandes’ on FPL Twitter, he has the most FPL pts amongst all players in the last 5 GWs with 44 pts and 3 double digit returns in last 5 GWs. We can keep debating whether his FPL hauls are lucky or not, the fact remains that he has been one of the best FPL assets this season. His 64 FPL pts so far, rank only behind Son, Kane and Salah which is an incredible return considering United have played Spurs, Everton, Chelsea and Arsenal so far and blanked in GW1.

He has made the most key passes (18) amongst all players in the last 5 GWs, with 4 big chances created and xA of 2.52 (2nd to only Grealish who has an xA of 2.87). He has also taken 19 shots with 9 on target and 7 inside the box. His xG of 2.98 is 4th amongst all players in the last 5 GWs. Bruno Fernandes based on his form and underlying stats offers a very high degree of both goal scoring and assists potential making him a strong captaincy option in GW10. He also scored 2 goals in the UCL game mid-week before being brought off and rested for 30 minutes.

Southampton lie in the bottom half in terms of defensive performance last 5 GWs and were quite poor defensively vs a goal-shy Wolves side who took 10 cracks at McCarthy’s goal. They have conceded 60 shots (46 inside the box) and 28 shots on target in the last 5 GWs resulting in xGC of 8.09.

United are ranked only behind Liverpool and Villa in terms of xG (9.31) over the last 5 GWs. Given the match-up and underlying form of Mr. Penandes, I believe he offers another strong captaincy option this GW.

Kevin De Bruyne (£11.6m, TSB – 17.9%) / Raheem Sterling (£11.5m, TSB – 4.6%) vs Burnely (H)

KDB FPL GW 10 Captain pick
Will KDB and City make a strong comeback?

Let us talk about the City boys who have underwhelmed this season so far. City have scored 10 goals in 8 matches this season despite starting off with 3 goals vs a strong Wolves side. Their last 5 games have seen them score 4 goals with just 2 wins. This is not the City side we have seen for the last few years now and I still trust them to turn it around, and what better opportunity than the upcoming run of fixtures. They have the best fixture run for the next 6 GWs as per the FF Hub fixture ticker with Burnley, Fulham, West Brom and Newcastle all visiting the Etihad in the next 6 games. What better opportunity to turn things around for a side like City and I believe they will come roaring back.

Burnley have not been their usual best this season defensively and City have had an outstanding record vs them in the past. They lie mid-table in terms of defensive numbers last 5 GWs with an xGC of 7.13, however have conceded 4 goals which means Pope has started coming back to form.

City players’ underlying stats are quite underwhelming too but I expect that to change with both Jesus and Aguero fit and their strong performances in the UCL. KDB was also fully rested midweek and Sterling subbed off early. Both are captaincy options that I wouldn’t recommend basis form but if you are backing City to turn things around, it would start from this GW and their proven prowess from the earlier seasons does justify considering them as captaincy options for this GW.

Mohamed Salah (£12.2m, TSB 27.7%) vs Brighton (A)

Mo Salah FPL GW 10 Captain pick
Mo is back

The Egyptian King is back and recovered from COVID-19 and played 61 mins last night vs Atalanta which means he should start vs Brighton. Salah has started this season well, just like the previous 3 seasons and he is slowly becoming one of the most reliable and safe captaincy choices in FPL. He has blanked only twice this season and had a no-show vs Leicester due to COVID which shows how reliable he can be as a captaincy option.

His underlying stats are brilliant as usual and shows his all-round pedigree. His season xG of 6.48 is 2nd to only Vardy (7.82) and he ranks within the top 5 on all key attacking metrics. He offers both goals and assists potential to a very high degree as shown below.

Salah stats ahead of FPL GW 10
Salah stats so far this season

The standout stat for him is the 85 touches in the box in 8 matches, which is 10 more than the 2nd highest 75 touches by Grealish. Averaging more than 10 touches in the box per match always bodes well for FPL returns.

He has posted an xG of 3.25 in the last 5 GWs which is only behind Bamford and Vardy despite missing the game v Leicester. Liverpool are up against a Brighton side who have not been shabby defensively but were poor at the back in GW9 vs Villa. Out of the xGC of 5.18 over the last 5 GWs, xGC of 2.04 was vs Villa alone in GW9. Out of the total shots they conceded over the last 5 GWs (38), they have conceded 15 vs Villa and if they defend like that vs Liverpool, they will be punished.

We all know how good Salah has been as an FPL asset and is a good captaincy option in most weeks and is also a strong option in GW10

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m, TSB 59.8%) and Patrick Bamford (£6.1m, TSB 35.6%)

These are two non-premium captaincy options but both are extremely good options given their underlying form and the matchup. Leeds v Everton is expected to an open game with loads of goals given how poor their defenses have been over the last 5 GWs (see below table).

Leeds vs Everton FPL GW 10

Both have incredible stats over the course of the season and last 5 GWs with Bamford having the highest xG (4.42) of all players over the last 5 GWs. DCL is 5th in terms of xG (2.9) during the same period. Bamford has got 9 big chances over the last 5 GWs with DCL getting 5 big chances in the same period. Both have 4 goals in the same period and are having really good seasons so far.

Given the defensive frailties of both the sides and the form of these 2 strikers, I expect both of them to be very good captaincy shouts this GW.

Other FPL GW 10 Captain options

Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane v Chelsea (Away)

Both are good options based on form, however Chelsea have been one of the best defensive sides over the last 5 GWs and I expect this to be a tight game.

Both still good options but I believe, there are better captaincy options this GW.

Jack Grealish v West Ham (Away)

Grealish and Villa showed last GW how unreliable they are as captaincy options and can easily blank or haul in any fixture. He is a good player to have in your FPL side but I would not captain him unless playing a really poor defence.

West Ham have been one of the better defences this season and I expect them to thwart Villa to a large extent.

My top 3 captaincy options for FPL GW10 🔽

  1. Jamie Vardy
  2. Bruno Fernandes
  3. Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Differential captain pick for FPL GW 10
Raheem Sterling

I do not have Vardy and currently have the armband on Bruno Fernandes. This might change depending on the transfers I make and will be posting it on Twitter. Follow me on Twitter at @fplfanatix to see my final captain choice for FPL GW 10.

Hope you enjoyed reading this and it helps with a difficult captaincy option this GW with a plethora of good options available. Good luck and may your arrows be green.
