FPL GW3 Wildcard- Best Combination and Tips

It is never too late or never too early to play the Wildcard. So, don’t panic if you have pressed the Wildcard button very early. FPL GW3 is indeed a good time to play the Wildcard to try and cover up Everton, Wolves assets, KDB, etc if you haven’t got them already. Check out this blog to know the best Wildcard team combinations, teams to focus on wildcard and much more!

Best Wildcard draft for FPL GW3:

Strategy:

The strategy behind this team is simple. Going with the three best premium midfielders(Sterling, Salah and KDB) but at the cost of leaving out Trent Alexander Arnold. Liverpool, Wolves defense and mid-priced strikers to complete the line-up.

Gamble : Leaving out Trent Alexander Arnold(7.5) who scored 210 points last season.

Goal Keepers :

Martinez(4.5), Ryan(4.5), McCarthy(4.5) are three good option for the budget keeper. Out choice is Martinez who had a stellar debut with Villa saving a penalty and getting 13 points. Brighton and Southampton have a manager who attack, play with a high line and hence the cleansheets chances are really reduced. Villa were totally a strong defensive unit post lockdown which helped them stay in the league.

Defenders:

Wolves double-up- Saiss(5.0) and Coady(5.0), Van Dijk(6.5), Justin(4.5), Mitchell(4.1)

Wolves fixtures:

Going without TAA may raise a few eyebrows, but it is likely that Wolves will get the same number of clean sheets as Liverpool over the next 5-7 weeks. Wolves had the second best xGA(37.39), best away xGA(19.51) last season and have strengthened the defense further in the form of Semedo(5.5) and Marcal(5.0). So we are going with Wolves double in the form of Saiss(5.0) and Coady(5.0).

Marcal(5.0) is also a great choice in place of Coady if he is fit. So dropping out TAA releases funds elsewhere and we have Liverpool coverage in the form of Van Dijk(6.5).The ever improving James(5.1) is another option if you are not convinced of doubling up on Wolves defense yet. He has 1 goal, 1 assist, 2 key passes, 15 points from 2 games so far and the immediate fixtures also look good. So its a close call between Marcal/Coady, Coleman and James for the third defender slot. Lamptey(4.5) is a also a great option and you could save that 0.5 in the bank.

Justin(4.7) has been there from the start, off to a flyer(goal contribution is both games) and increased in value. Mitchell(4.1) plays the role of bench fodder. Justin rotates really well with both Mitchell and my third striker Adams(5.9).

Midfielders:

Raheem Sterling- Still a differential

De Bruyne(10.6) seems to be no brainer. The No.10 Free role in the absence of Gundogan, penalties make him a must-have now. It would also be foolish to leave out the Egyptian King Salah(12.0) on wildcard. The third midfielder is our differential pick in the form of Sterling(11.5) who is surprisingly at 5.7% ownership. There is very little to separate between Sterling, KDB and Salah but Sterling is criminally under-owned compared to others.

Sterling vs KDB vs Salah- GW30+ to GW38+ last season:

  • Minutes- 636 vs 644 vs 638
  • Goals- 9 vs 5 vs 3
  • Big chances- 10 vs 3 vs 9
  • xG- 6.04 vs 3.00 vs 5.68
  • Assists- 4 vs 5 vs 4
  • xA- 1.87 vs 5.66 vs 2.41
  • Points- 86 vs 73 vs 47

Fourth midfielder is Jorginho/Soucek if you prefer to go with a 5.0 defender in the form of Wolves/Everton defense. Podence(5.6) and Doucoure(5.5) are good options if you go with Lamptey(4.5).

Bench Fodder– There are many 4.5 midfielders starting regularly but our pick is Burke(4.5) who started up front against Villa along with McGoldrick.

Forwards:

It is not essential to own a premium forward this season as the mid-priced strikers are so consistent and could free up space for Premium mids. We are going with DCL, Jimenez as the two main forwards. Werner(9.5) is a good choice on Wildcard but with Ziyech, Pulisic still out it will take time to for Werner to get going.

The good thing with mid-priced strikers like Jimenez is that they are almost set and forget with their consistency and good fixtures looming. DCL seems to be getting too many changes with this new midfield scoring a hat trick last week. Jimenez is amazingly consistent(180+ points in each of last 2 seasons) and with these easy fixtures coming in, he is almost a most own.

The are very good options for third striker in the form of Mitrovic(6.0), Bamford(5.7) and Adams(5.9). But our pick is Adams, who has got a price drop recently, but has been getting those chances in good areas and is surely due a goal. Adams has the most big chances over the past two weeks. Ings has had only the half the big chances and shots in the box compared to Adams vs Spurs but got two goals. So a goal is surely coming!

Alternate FPL GW3 Wildcard draft combination:

The changes to this team is simple- Dropping Sterling(11.5) to improve the overall squad. Removing Sterling makes way for Arnold, Rodriguez to this squad. This would be a much safer and a template team to play with!
