Gameweek 16 turned out to be a bit of a disaster for quite a few managers, especially because of Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp decided to give a rest to Sadio Mane and Trent Alexander-Arnold. This proved detrimental to aspirations of qualifying for the FPL cup for managers. The average points for this week was 54. Let us look into the top five talking points from GW16, interesting numbers, and our Dream team.
Sonaldo Nazario:
Son-Heung Min scored arguably the goal of the season to inspire Spurs to a massive 5-0 victory against Burnley. The South Korean ran from inside his own half and went past almost the entire Clarets team and finished calmly to score Spurs’ third goal. To put things in perspective, Son ran a little over 70 yards in 12 seconds. Jose Mourinho and his son were impressed, they compared him to the legendary Ronaldo Nazario.
Adding on to that, Spurs were good. They were back to their dazzling best. Harry Kane scored a brace, Dele Alli produced two assists and everybody else chipped in too. But, most importantly they kept a clean sheet, their first since Matchday 5. Given the fact that Spurs have some very good set of fixtures coming up, it’s high time we at least double up or if not triple up on Spurs’ assets.
Fixtures: WOLVES(A), CHELSEA(H), BRIGHTON(H), NORWICH(A), SOUTHAMPTON (A).
Martial arts:
The most anticipated match of the weekend produced the most unexpected result, at the Etihad Stadium. Manchester United rather easily swotted aside the might of their city rivals, to all but end their title hopes. At the center of things for the Red Devils was the returning Anthony Martial. The Frenchman scored what turned out to be the winning goal in the game. But it’s his overall play and movement in general was what wrecked havoc to City’s defense.
Manchester United have a good run of fixtures coming up on paper. However, Ole’s men have tended to save their best for the big games. So let’s not get carried away just yet. The obvious thing to do is to get both Rashford and Martial in, but we recommend you to wait for a week or so and then take a call.
Fixtures: EVERTON(H), WATFORD(A), NEWCASTLE(H), BURNLEY(A), ARSENAL(A).
King Nicolas arrives at long last:
After two long months without a win in the league, Arsenal finally registered 3 points against a hapless West Ham on Monday. New signing Nicolas Pepe showed exactly what he is capable of to the world, as the winger capped off his tremendous performance with a goal and an assist.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also registered a goal and an assist at the London stadium. But the most surprising part of the entire game was the exclusion of Alex Lacazette from the starting eleven. His replacement Martinelli showed his class too. The youngster grabbed himself his first goal in the league and 8th in all competitions. Martinelli could be a differential pick if he keeps getting opportunities.
Fixtures: MANCITY(H), EVERTON(A), BOURNEMOUTH(A), CHELSEA(H), MANUTD(H).
The Ferguson Effect:
Well, we’ve seen it time and again this season and in previous seasons, the new manager bounce is a perennial existence in football. When Marco Silva was sacked by Everton post the Merseyside derby defeat, most knew that it could end up being a blessing in disguise for the Toffees. So, when Duncan Ferguson became interim manager for the visit of Chelsea, there was already a sense of anticipation around Goodison Park. The home side backed it up with a determined performance against a naive West London outfit.
Ferguson employed an old- fashioned 4-4-2 system, with Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin as the two strikers. The duo ripped the Chelsea defense to shreds and scored 3 goals between them to inspire the hosts to a comfortable win over their opponents. Everton do have a challenging set of fixtures coming up. However, if they do play the way they did on Saturday, they can pick up points. From FPL point of view therefore, Richarlison becomes an extremely valuable asset. The Brazilian has scored in three consecutive games, and he is often proven to be bit of streak player. He’s definitely worth a gamble.
Fixtures: MANUTD(A), ARSENAL(H), BURNLEY(H), NEWCASTLE(A).
Jota could emulate what he did last season:
Diogo Jota had a very poor start last season. He was plagued by several injuries and only started to fire in the middle of December. The Portugese forward scored 9 goals last season from then on. Similar to last year, Jota has endured another forgettable start to a season. Having said that, the Wolf was back to his very best in Gameweek 16 at the Amex stadium. He scored a brace and took his tally up to 3 for the season. With big games on the horizon, Jota ‘s speed on the counter attack could well be the key if Wolves are to get anything out of those games.
Fixtures: TOTTENHAM(H), NORWICH(A), MANCITY(H), LIVERPOOL(A).
Gameweek 16 in Numbers:
- Jota had a xG of 1.42, which was the highest this weekend
- James Maddison created 5 big chances against Aston Villa
- Jonny Evans had 4 shots inside the box
- Vicente Guaita now has three consecutive clean sheets
- Danny Ings has scored in 5 consecutive games for the first time in his career.
