Rashford steals the show in Gameweek 15

Gameweek 15, just like most other weeks in the Premier League produced shocking results. The likes of Spurs, Sheffield United and Arsenal surprisingly suffered defeats. Well, maybe not Arsenal. The average points in FPL this week was 49. Let us look into the top five talking points from GW14, interesting numbers, and our Dream team.

Wolves buck the trend of Europa League Hangovers:

A man whose stock keeps on rising
A man whose stock keeps on rising

Teams with less squad depth struggle in the Premier League if they play in the Europa League. That is arguably one of the most commonly suggested cliches going around. Indeed, teams like Newcastle, Burnley and Everton have justified that in recent seasons. However, Wolves, this season are showing that both competitions can be managed effectively.

Nuno’s men sit 5th in the table, 4 points and 7 positions ahead of where they were at this stage last year. Its been 11 Match-days since Wolves last lost a game. From FPL point of view, Wolves’ assets are a must have during the upcoming festive period. Joao Moutinho in particular is a great differential. The midfielder has registered a goal and 3 assists in the last 5 matches. Apart from him, Raul Jimenez and Matt Doherty are viable options too. Wolves do have some big games coming up. But they often tend to deliver in big games, so don’t count them out.

Rashford ‘Spurred’ on by his old pal’s arrival:

A Picasso at the 'Theatre'
A Picasso at the ‘Theatre’

One word to describe Marcus Rashford’s performance – Breathtaking. The Englishman completed more dribbles, had more touches in the opposition box and took more shots than any other player on the pitch. After his brace in Gameweek 15 , Rashford now has 9 goals in the league, which is just 1 shy of his last season’s tally.

Considering his form and United’s promising set of fixtures coming up, Rashford will be a very good pick for managers in FPL. While United’s consistency is always in doubt, Rashford is still their best player, and he is a certain starter and that matters more than anything else in the festive period.

Silva Lining:

Football is blessed to have these two magicians on the pitch together
Football is blessed to have these two magicians on the pitch together

You don’t have to be a fan of ManCity, if you’re a fan of football just go back and watch the performances from the two Silvas against Burnley. David and Bernardo absolutely stole the show with immense slickness and grace at Turf Moor, as they both notched up couple of assists a piece in FPL. Bernardo Silva’s assist for Jesus’ goal in particular epitomized surgical precision.

Now, to be honest, Bernardo Silva’s form this season has been uncharacteristically up and down. Having said that, he has shown in the last year or so that he always delivers in big matches. Pep’s men have three straight ‘biggies’ coming up, so Bernardo could be a pretty astute pick for managers in FPL.

Down Memory Lane: The Scores tied at 0-0, this is the game in hand for the champions and Liverpool are 2 points clear. On enemy territory, Bernardo Silva cuts inside onto his favored left foot from the right flank and beats De Gea at his near post with mind boggling brilliance. That as a football fan, is personally my favorite goal in recent times.

Magpies flying under the radar:

Newcastle just keep churning out results
Newcastle just keep churning out results

At the start of the season, most people had Newcastle as firm favorites to get relegated. But, Steve Bruce, thus far has done a sensational job in not only keeping Newcastle well away from the drop zone, but having them closer to the top 6 than bottom 3.

Only 4 teams have kept more clean sheets than Newcastle this season. Given the fact that Newcastle have a pretty easy set of games coming up, having players from their defense is a no brainer. Martin Dubravka is owned by just 1.1% of managers, an alarmingly low number considering his heroics in the last two years. Jetro Willems is potentially the best option from the Magpies. The Dutchman has 2 goals and 2 assists to his name and he costs just 4.6 mil.

These Chelsea kids are in for the long haul:

Climbing up the Mount-ain
Climbing up the Mount-ain

A couple of months ago, when Chelsea were stitching wins for fun, many people believed that its only a matter of time before these kids lose the early season bounce. Just as predicted, the Blues went through a rough patch in the last 3 weeks or so. Without a win in 3 games in all competitions, Frank Lampard’s men produced a near perfect display against Aston Villa. And yet again, it was Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount at the thick of the action.

Tammy Abraham came back to haunt his former club, by scoring the first and setting up the winner against Dean Smith’s side. Mason Mount ended his drought too, after a scoring a stunning volley.

But the stand-out performer was Reece James. The fullback delivered some devastating crosses into the box, one of which turned out to be the assist for Tammy’s goal. But, it was his defending that surprised the viewers. For the second time in three home games he had a top quality player in his pockets (Zaha and Grealish). James is owned by only 0.4% of people and he’ll be a massive differential for managers.

Fixtures: EVERTON(A), BOURNEMOUTH(H), SPURS(A), SOUTHAMPTON(H)

Gameweek 15 in Numbers:

  • Tammy Abraham has been involved in 14 goals(11 goals 3 assists) this season, a tally bettered only by Jamie Vardy.
  • 5 of Divock Origi’s 18 Premier League goals have come against Everton. The Belgian also became the first Liverpool player to score in 4 successive home matches against Everton.
  • Leicester City have more clean sheets(7) than Liverpool, Arsenal, ManUtd and Spurs combined.
  • Marcus Rashford now has as many goals as Sadio Mane in the league this season(9). Surely, he deserves more mention.
