Team Preview: Manchester United

Romero hasn’t lost any of his 22 games at Old Trafford, can he be the lucky charm again?

Clock ticks 90 minutes, Diogo Dalot has a shot deflected out for a corner, but VAR comes to life and a penalty is awarded and is duly tucked away by the potential “next Mancunian superstar”. That was in March 2019 when all hell broke loose in Paris as far as Manchester United were concerned. What has happened since is nothing short of absolute catastrophe.

When Manchester United take on their arch rivals Liverpool on Sunday, only a nincompoop would not have the Merseyside club as favorites for the match. That is the sort of mess Manchester United have gotten themselves into. Some of the stats they’ve racked up are baffling to say the least. The Red Devils are 20th in the table for the number of tackles and interceptions made, while in the last 17 matches, United have won as many points (17) as Liverpool ‘s wins(17) at the same time.

So, is there anything positive for United, apart from suggesting the fact that a positive result on Sunday would be a massive turning point for this young team? Whether they could that is another matter altogether!

Team News:

Manchester United will be boosted by the returns of Wan-Bissaka, Martial and Lindelof. Shaw and Lingard are still doubts for this match, while De Gea and Pogba are ruled out.

Team Preview: Liverpool

Allison’s return comes as a timely boost for Liverpool as they will look to keep more clean sheets

It could finally happen, Liverpool can smell the taste of the coveted Premier League Trophy for the first time in 30 years, twice they’ve missed it by a smidgen and they wouldn’t wanna let this opportunity go by. Jurgen Klopp’s men are on a 17 game winning streak, a win on Sunday would level the record for the most number of wins(18) on the bounce, which is held by Manchester City.

And yet? It feels as though they’re not bringing their A game, they were awarded a dodgy penalty against Leicester and came away with all three points, a goalkeeping error helped them at Bramall Lane whilst a collection of gilt edged chances missed by Chelsea aided them to scrape a win at the Bridge. You can keep going on, but 8 games in Liverpool are sitting pretty on top with 8 wins and 8 points clear of the Champions. If anything, the performances can only get better from here for Liverpool, Sunday would be a great opportunity to make a massive statement to the rest of the chasing pack.

The only ones who are nervous about this game are the Liverpool fans, their players would be hoping that it doesn’t get transferred to them. Indeed, one could argue that the trip to Old Trafford is where Liverpool lost the league last season. But Klopp’s men look as though they are in no mood to let their foot off the gas.

Team News:

The league leaders will welcome back Joel Matip and Allison this weekend while Mo Salah will face a late fitness test.

Did you know?

  • 10 of Marcus Rashford’s 30 goals in the premier league have come against other ‘Big Six’ oppositions.
  • If Liverpool win on Sunday, they’ll equal the longest 100% record at the start of a league season, currently held by Chelsea, who did it in the 05-06 campaign.

We might well witness echoes of this game on Sunday, Brace yourselves you Mancunians!

Prediction: Manchester United 1 Liverpool 5

Yes this is Old Trafford, and yes it has definitely been Liverpool’s nemesis in the past. But on current form and quality of both teams, we can’t look past a comfortable Liverpool win. Remember the day Manchester City became ” noisy neighbours “? This might well turn out to be the worst day at Old Trafford since then !
