FPL GW23 Tips & Preview- Dilemmas Answered

Best Liverpool Assets to Target for GW23 and beyond

Liverpool have an upcoming fixture run of Ipswich (Home), Double Gameweek of Bournemouth (Away) & Everton (Away), Wolves (Home), Manchester City (Away).

Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures

At face value, my initial thoughts are that these are great opportunities for Liverpool to score goals. There are great defensive fixtures mixed in but I would back Liverpool to concede in more games than not during this run. So attacking prospects will be my main targets.

Salah should be in your lineup and is a realistic captain shout for all of these fixtures. No need to explain much further. His recent run of two blanks was slightly unlucky (1.9 expected goal involvements) and also faced Nottingham Forest who are one of the premiere defences in the Premier League this season. He also scored midweek in the Champions League which will be good for the confidence.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is a great asset for the upcoming fixture run. His two-pronged approach to earning points with clean sheets and attacking returns will serve him well in these fixtures. The Ipswich and Everton fixtures could see potential double digit hauls while all of these fixtures other than Bournemouth are the type of fixtures where you want Trent in your lineup. His expected goal involvements per game is 0.38 which is amazing for a defender and on par with his previous great seasons where he saw double digit attacking returns on a number of occasions.

Cody Gakpo will be my third asset for Liverpool’s upcoming run. The Dutchman has started in Liverpool’s last 10 Premier League fixtures in a row and was also rested midweek for their Champions League fixture. The recent injury to Diogo Jota will also see an uptick in Gakpo’s expected overall minutes. He should at a minimum start 3 of the 4 next fixtures and will likely feature as a substitute if he is benched and can get on the scoresheet in the last half hour of a match.

He takes multiple shots and provides multiple key passes on a regular basis and his recent form combined with his underlying data shows he’s a perfect transfer option. As mentioned earlier, i’d rather have an extra attacker rather than a defender or goalkeeper for this fixture run.

Gakpo stats since GW13:

Only Wood(66) and Isak(88) have more FPL Points among Forwards since GW13.

  • Starts– 9/9
  • Shots– 23
  • Shots inside the box– 17
  • xG– 3.49
  • Big Chances– 7
  • xGI– 5.3 (5th among Forwards)
  • Goal Involvements– 6 (Joint 3rd among FWDs)
  • FPL Points– 48 (Joint 3rd among FWDs)

Arne Slot Assistant Manager Chip in DGW24?

Many people including myself have debated using the Assistant Manager chip from DGW24 to GW26 on Arne Slot. The fixtures would read as a Double gameweek of Bournemouth (Away) & Everton (Away) followed by Wolves (Home) and Manchester City (Away).

If you are using this chip on a top team’s manager, you are looking for fixtures that are highly likely wins and also the potential for clean sheets or multiple goals scored.

Bournemouth are in great form currently and the Everton fixture is a derby game. Wolves & Manchester City are capable of scoring in any fixture so the overall ceiling of the Assistant Manager chip is not the best here. Yes, you can transfer the manager if needed but I believe there will be better opportunities in future gameweeks.

Tottenham are a team I am keeping an eye on. Currently 15th in the table with an injury list that comprises half their squad. Once the majority of their starting eleven are fit and available, I will be keeping an eye on any Double Gameweeks that also allow for the bonus points to be earned by drawing against or defeating teams more than five positions higher than them in the table.

Keep an eye on this article each week for more assistant manager chip strategy and thoughts during the season.

Amad Diallo- The Budget Gem

Amad’s 20 point haul vs Southampton

Amad has been in great form this season. He is 7th in overall points for midfielders and his current price is only £5.6m. He has 6 goals and 7 assists to his name in only 15 starts this season. He is clearly trusted by Amorim and has been their brightest spark going forward since the new manager took over.

Top Midfielders(Less than 8.0 Million) for xGI since GW15:

  • Mbeumo- 4.9
  • Amad– 4.6
  • Gordon- 4.3
  • Sarr- 3.7
  • Szoboszlai- 3.7

The second half of the season will see transfers be aimed at targeting double and blank gameweeks for the most part. Transferring in Amad can help increase available transfer funds while also having an option that can score in any fixture. He has scored against Manchester City & Liverpool this season while also scoring a hattrick against Southampton and two assists against Everton which shows he is somewhat fixture proof.

His upcoming run of fixtures is mixed but he regularly plays 90 minutes and is both a goal threat and a creative threat. He is a good choice for your FPL lineup.

FPL GW23 Key Fixture Analysis:

Liverpool v Ipswich:

A key fixture in regards to captaincy and transfer strategy this week is Liverpool hosting Ipswich at Anfield. Liverpool have scored 2+ goals in every home fixture this season other than against Nottingham Forest. This is supported by strong underlying expected goal data as well as attacking heat maps.

Ipswich have conceded in every away game except for one and have conceded 2+ goals in almost half of these. Their underlying defensive data has been poor and they are lucky to not have conceded more goals. They have only failed to score in away fixtures against Arsenal, Nottingham Forest & Brighton so they will always be a chance to score. I would say it’s 50/50 whether Liverpool keep their clean sheet but I am definitely keen on Liverpool’s attacking prospects.

Salah has returned in every home fixture except for one this season and Gakpo has returned in 5 of his last 6 home appearances. Ipswich have struggled defensively all season which was further highlighted by their 6-0 loss at home to Manchester City last week. There is nothing to suggest that Ipswich will be able to stifle Liverpool’s attack.

Manchester City v Chelsea:

Chelsea travel to the Etihad where they face a defensively frail Manchester City side. City have conceded at home in 4 of their last 5 league home fixtures including 4 goals conceded to Tottenham and 2 to Manchester United.

Chelsea’s away form has been underwhelming with only 1 goal in their previous 3 away fixtures but the defensive strategies of Everton & Crystal Palace were always going to stifle Chelsea and their style. Chelsea thrive against teams that play a higher line and try to keep possession in defensive areas. Scoring 4 against Tottenham and 5 against Southampton in recent away fixtures displays this the best.

Expect Chelsea to score 2+ goals while Manchester City should also score multiple goals if they perform at a decent standard.
