FPL Gameweek 17 Transfer Tips: Two Players to Buy, Hold & Sell

The two biggest incidences of GW16 are:

  • Rayan Aït-Nouri getting a red card with fellow team mate Cunha also charged
  • Marc Cucurella saw a price increase despite picking up a red card

However, the thing which stood out the most for me is that none of the popular captains returned heavily. So, the task of choosing a captain no longer remains a safe and easy task. So a lot of planning is needed as a lot of action coming up with 3 deadlines in 9 days.

So, let’s start with our BUY-HOLD-SELL article for this GW, sponsored by …. Well, nobody. We are poor, but you can help here if you want 😊

FPL Gameweek 17 Transfer Tips: Two Players to BUY

PS – I am not mentioning Salah, as he is non-negotiable at this point. I assume he is already in your team.

Alex Iwobi (£5.7m) – MID, Fulham – 5.2% TSB

Since Gameweek 9, Iwobi has established himself as one of the standout budget midfielders (priced under £8.0m) in FPL this season, consistently delivering strong performances across multiple metrics:

  • 2nd for Goals Scored
  • 2nd for BPS
  • 2nd for FPL Points
  • 3rd for Bonus Points

Iwobi’s appeal is further boosted by a favorable run of fixtures in the near future, increasing his prospects for consistent returns. In excellent form and playing a key role in Fulham’s attack, he is well-placed to take full advantage of these upcoming matchups.

Given his form and favourable fixtures, Iwobi is a must-have for FPL managers looking to bolster their midfield. This is especially true for this week, as Fulham hosts bottom-of-the-table Southampton at home.

Jamie Vardy (£5.6m) – FWD, Leicester – 9.4% TSB

Leicester vs. Wolves stands out as a prime fixture to target this week. Wolves’ defensive metrics highlight their struggles:

  • 20th for Goals Conceded
  • 20th for Clean Sheets
  • 17th for Shots from Set Pieces Conceded
  • 17th for Shots on Target Conceded
  • 16th for xGC
  • 15th for Shots in Box Conceded
  • 15th for xCS
  • 15th for NPxGC
  • 15th for Shots Conceded

On the other hand, Jamie Vardy has flourished under Van Nistelrooy’s management. Among forwards since the Dutchman’s arrival, Vardy ranks:

  • 1st for FPL points
  • 1st for Big Chances
  • 1st for Goals scored
  • 1st for Goal Involvements
  • 1st for Big Chances Created
  • 1st for xA
  • 1st for BPS
  • 2nd for xGI
  • 2nd for Assists

With ownership below 10%, Vardy offers an enticing one-week differential for managers seeking an edge.

Matheus Cunha (£7.1m) – FWD, Wolves – 23.8% TSB

Cunha ranks among the top three most-sold unflagged forwards this week, despite delivering an impressive 9-point haul in the last gameweek.

The mass exodus likely stems from the FA charging him with misconduct after an incident post-match against Ipswich. However, he remains eligible to play against Leicester for now.

Leicester’s defensive stats paint a grim picture:

  • 20th for Shots in Box Conceded
  • 20th for Shots from Set Pieces Conceded
  • 20th for Headers Conceded
  • 20th for Clean Sheets
  • 19th for Shots Conceded
  • 19th for NPxGC Conceded
  • 19th for xGC Conceded
  • 18th for Shots on Target Conceded
  • 18th for Big Chances Conceded
  • 18th for xCS Conceded
  • 18th for Goals Conceded

Considering Cunha’s ability and Leicester’s vulnerability, holding onto him for this gameweek could prove a smart move.

Cole Palmer (£11.2m) – MID, Chelsea – 63.6%

Over 14,000 FPL managers have opted to part ways with Palmer following his recent blank, a performance that has tested the patience of many who invested in him for his early-season promise and premium price.

That said, this was Palmer’s first blank in his last four outings, and his xGI of 0.54 highlights his continued potential to deliver. For managers willing to hold, there’s reason for optimism. Chelsea’s upcoming fixtures are highly favorable, offering Palmer an excellent opportunity to rediscover his form and reward those who remain patient. If he capitalizes on these matchups, Palmer could still prove to be a valuable asset in the coming weeks.

Stick with Palmer for now—his promising fixtures ahead give him a strong chance to bounce back and deliver returns.

FPL Gameweek 17 Transfer Tips: Two Players to SELL

Rayan Aït-Nouri (£4.8m) – DEF, Wolves – 10.4% TSB

Rayan Aït-Nouri’s decline in FPL popularity has been swift and dramatic. Once a favored budget option, he now finds himself as the most transferred-out player this week—a trend that’s easy to justify.

Aït-Nouri’s dismissal in the previous match means he’s suspended for Gameweek 17, but the trouble doesn’t end there. Upon his return, he’ll still be walking the disciplinary tightrope with four yellow cards. Adding to his woes, Wolves’ fixture list takes a sharp downturn starting Gameweek 18, making him an increasingly unattractive choice for FPL managers.

For managers prioritizing steady returns or aiming for higher upside, this could be the perfect moment to move on from Rayan Aït-Nouri and redirect funds toward a defender offering stronger form and more favourable fixtures.

Nick Pope (£5.0m) – GKP, Newcastle – 5.2% TSB

During the 4-2 defeat at Brentford, Nick Pope suffered a knee injury that forced him to miss training and Newcastle’s subsequent 4-0 victory over Leicester City. Reports indicate that Pope has sustained ligament damage and is expected to be sidelined for the next seven matches, including key fixtures against Aston Villa, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur.

Providing an update following the Leicester win, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe shared: “He saw the specialist, and the feedback is that he’s likely to be out for around a month. It’s unfortunate timing for both us and Nick, given the number of games in that period. We’re hopeful he’ll be in good condition to play after those four weeks. The injury happened in a very innocuous way—just passing the ball against Brentford—but he didn’t feel right afterward.”

In this busy Christmas period, at the risk of sounding satanic, I suggest you renounce “Pope.”
