Coming out of Matchday 4 with less than exciting performances from premium fantasy assets like Kylian Mbappe and Cristiano Ronaldo may leave Euro fantasy managers upset. Nonetheless, if you still have your wildcard chip and need to separate the wheat from the chaff in your fantasy team, this article is for you.
With only three gameweeks remaining, it’s not too late to catch up or stay ahead of your mini-league rivals. However, if you plan on activating the wildcard chip, who are the best players to bring in for the UEFA Euro 2024 Quarter-Finals 🤔
Here are the top wildcard targets to consider for Matchday 5, as well as my probable draft team to act as a guide.

Top Players To Target For Your Euro Fantasy MD5 Wildcard
Playmaking Maestros
Fabian Ruiz (€6.5m) – Spain
With two goals and two assists in his last four games, Fabian Ruiz has been the creative engine for Spain in UEFA Euro 2024. He boasts an impressive 93% passing accuracy, 3.8 shots per 90 and has created 3 big chances for La Roja. The Spanish midfielder has accumulated 29 points for Euro Fantasy managers. Set to take on host Germany, Fabian Ruiz is the top midfield player to target for your wildcard team.

Nico Williams (€7m) – Spain
With one goal, one assist, and 11 chances created for Spain, Nico Williams has been a standout performer this Euro 2024. Known for his innate dribbling and frequent touches in the opposition box, Williams is frequently in a prime position to score more often than his Spanish teammates.
Scoring a superb goal in the Round of 16 against Georgia and accumulating an expected goal involvement of 0.89 xGI in Matchday 4. I anticipate the Spanish youngster will be a key contributor to Spain’s attack when they face fellow contenders Germany, making him an attractive selection for your wildcard team.

Xavi Simons (€7m) – Netherlands
Xavi Simons has emerged as a crucial creative force for the Netherlands in UEFA Euro 2024, leading the assist charts with three assists and creating eight opportunities. With an expected assist (xA) of 0.80, Simons thrives in the number 10 role, excelling in making key progressive passes to his teammates. He is certainly an enticing option for Matchday 5, poised to earn more points against their upcoming opponents, the Crescent-stars.
Lethal Strikers
Cody Gakpo (€7.5m) – Netherlands
With 3 goals and an assist, and 4 big chances created, Cody Gakpo is having an excellent campaign with the Netherlands. Gakpo was instrumental in helping his nation qualify for the next round. He secured the Player of the Match award after contributing a goal and an assist, finishing with 12 points for his owners.
Accumulating a leading expected assists (xA) of 1.7, Cody Gakpo can also provide crucial assists to help his team win. If you still don’t have Cody Gakpo in your team, now is the perfect time to bring him in on your wildcard as the Netherlands face Türkiye next in Matchday 5.

Lamine Yamal (€6.5m) – Spain
Already tipped by a few experts as to win the Young player of the tournament, Lamine Yamal continues to impress his owners. He is currently tied for first place in the Euro 2024 rankings for major chances created, having assisted two goals for Spain and behind only Cody Gakpo in terms of expected assists (1.2) (xA).
The 16-year-old is a delight to watch for La Roja, known for his unpredictable ability to break through opposition defenses. Coupled with set-piece prowess adds to his lethal forward capabilities, making him a player to consider owning against Germany and a strong choice heading into the Quarter-Finals.

Topnotch Defenders
Denzel Dumfries (€5.5m) – Netherlands
Despite initial doubts about his playing time, Denzel Dumfries has started in three of his last four appearances as the Netherlands’ right wing-back. In their recent match against Romania, Dumfries played in a much advanced role and recorded an expected assist (xA) of 0.28, second only to Cody Gakpo’s 0.94 xA.
Assuming Ronald Koeman maintains his backline without introducing competitors like Jeremie Frimpong or Lutsharel Geertruida, Dumfries’ attacking style could prove beneficial for Euro Fantasy managers who choose to back him against Türkiye in Matchday 5.

William Saliba (€5.5m) – France
With 3 clean sheets and a total of 23 balls recovered, William Saliba has quietly impressed in Euro Fantasy, amassing 27 points for managers. However, his key defensive prowess will face a significant test against Portugal in the upcoming match.
Nevertheless, given that France is the only team to secure three clean sheets in Euro 2024 so far, the French defender backs himself to perform well and aims to continue his strong contributions in ball recoveries.
Elite Shot-stoppers 🧤
Diogo Costa (€5m) – Portugal
The Portuguese goalkeeper have a jaw-breaking performance in Matchday 4 against Slovenia, making several crucial saves that kept Portugal in contention for their potential second UEFA Euro title.
His three saves during the penalty shootout not only secured victory but also earned him three additional points, along with the Player of the Match award. If you’re seeking a shot-stopper who can accumulate save points, Diogo Costa is your go-to choice.
Other excellent goal keepers to look out for include: Mike Maignan of France, Unai Simón of Spain, Bart Verbruggen of the Netherlands and Jordan Pickford of England.

Euro Fantasy MD5 Wildcard Draft Template
I decided to put together a draft to help managers identify players who could excel in Matchday 5, based on their recent form and favorable fixtures.
Notes:
- Germany and Spain have scored a combined 19 goals in Euro 2024, making clean sheets in their clash unlikely. However, at just €4.5m, Marc Cucurella is an appealing option for ball recovery and a solid replacement for the suspended Marc Guehi.
- If the match goes to extra time, Diogo Costa and Jordan Pickford are excellent shot-stoppers and easy to rotate across Matchday 5.
- Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo are omitted due to their high price tags and lack of form, but they are still likely to get on the scoresheet. Kylian Mbappe can be replaced by any of them depending on your preference.
- England’s Kobbie Mainoo and France’s N’Golo Kante are two promising candidates for ball recoveries in the midfield and an affordable path to bringing in premium attackers.
- Doubling up on Spain’s midfield seems efficient as La Roja are tipped to make it through to the semi-finals.
- William Saliba and Virgil Van Dijk make strong claims for ball recoveries, while Denzel Dumfries and Joao Cancelo excel in advancing from defense, giving managers a solid backline.

Wishing you all best of luck in your selection. Cheers.
