Belgium find themselves in perhaps the Easiest Group and should progress as Group Winners. The Fight for 2^nd Spot will be one to watch between an Attacking Ukraine team and Defensively solid teams Romania & Slovakia. Expect a highly competitive Group with lots of unpredictable results, let’s preview Euro 2024 Group E in this blog!

EURO 2024 Group E – Preview

BELGIUM

Can the Red Devils finally win Silverware that has long eluded them? 

• FIFA World Ranking – 3
• Qualification Record – W6, D2, L0
• Goals For – 22
• Goals Against – 4

Strengths:

Let’s be honest, no one expects Belgium to win the Euros this summer. With the added expectations and the burden for glory derailing the Golden Generation of Belgium in previous tournaments, there is no such lofty standard set for them at the Euros this summer. A youthful team led by stalwarts like Lukaku, KDB and Vertonghen will play much more freely and when the pair of Lukaku & KDB are on song, very few teams can stop them.

Weaknesses: 

A lack of experienced heads will cause problems in the Bigger games. Besides the fallout of the Manager with Goalkeeper Courtois is not what the National team will be happy with before the Euros. The Defense is the weak point in the team where they will miss Classy players like Kompany, Alderweireld, & Meunier who could step up when their team needed them the most.

Belgium Euro 2024 Predicted Lineup: 

• The Goalkeeper slot is confirmed and it will be Koen Casteels starting as the No. 1. The coach has confirmed that in a recent press conference.
• At the back, 3 of the 4 are pretty nailed. Castagne & Theate will start as the Full Backs and one of Faes/Debast is set to partner with Vertonghen as the Center Backs for the side.
• The Midfield looks fairly settled with Onana in the Engine room & KDB & one of  Tielemans/Mangala as the Central Midfielders.
• Up top, it will be Doku & Trossard on the wings with Belgium’s Record Goal scorer Lukaku leading the line.

Belgium XI (4-3-3): Casteels; Castagne, Faes/Debast, Vertonghen, Theate; Onana, Mangala/Tielemans, De Bruyne; Trossard, Lukaku, Doku.

Belgium Euro 2024 Set Piece Takers: 

• Penalties – Lukaku
• Free Kicks – Kevin De Bruyne
• Corners – Kevin De Bruyne

Belgium Euro 2024 Top Fantasy Choices:

1. Lukaku (9 Fwd) – Only one place to start, that’s obvious. Belgium’s Record Goal scorer Lukaku got 14 Goals and 1 Assist in Euro Qualifiers. Had a decent campaign for Roma with 20 Goals and 4 Assists in 45 Games.
   • In my opinion, he is a perfect option in the Group stages as he loves to bully the so called weaker teams. He’s also on penalties.
   • The Top scorer of Qualifying at a mid-range price in such a Group. Don’t miss this opportunity to go and buy him.
2. Kevin De Bruyne (9.5 Mid) – Cometh the hour, cometh Big Game Kev. Contrary to Lukaku, KDB always steps it up against the Best teams. That is why he is fondly called “Big Game Kev”. 

On all set pieces and a major influence for all the creativity that Belgium will have, a Double Up with Lukaku is not out of the question in this relatively easy group.

3. Leandro Trossard (8 Mid) – Belgium’s Biggest Goal Threat after Lukaku. What has stopped us from picking Trossard in most Fantasy games is the worry of rotation. Well, we do not have that here. A nailed starter with a much cheaper price compared to KDB and a much bigger goal threat, you can pick Trossard as a cheeky differential alongside Lukaku.
4. Notable Mentions – Wout Faes (4 Def) – You cannot ignore a Starting 4 Million Defender for a Big Nation. Though he carries no significant Goal Threat, he makes it up with 5.2 Ball Recoveries per game. Belgium should also keep at least 1 Clean sheet in this Group.

UKRAINE

• FIFA World Ranking – 22
• Qualification Record – W6, D2, L2
• Goals For – 15
• Goals Against – 10

Strengths:

An organized team with a Solid Defense protected by Real Madrid’s Goalkeeper Hero Andrey Lunin. The presence of experienced heads of Zabarnyi, and Mykolenko in Defense with Zinchenko marshalling the Midfield and a Quality player in Malinovskyi. The form of La Liga Top scorer Dovbyk and the raw pace of Mudryk will trouble most teams in their Group.

Weaknesses: 

A defensively weak Right Back in Konoplya and the overall inexperience of most of the squad will cause some problems when they face crunch situations. 

Ukraine Euro 2024 Predicted Lineup:

• A pretty settled 11 looks likely with Lunin doing just enough to keep Trubin out of Goal.
• Expect a back 4 of Konoplya, Zabarnyi, Matviyenko and Mykolenko. The Engine Room of the Midfield should be Zinchenko and Malinovskyi. 
• Up front on the wings will be Mudryk and Tsygankov. Dovbyk will play as the Striker with Sudakov playing as the Playmaker of the team.

Ukraine predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Lunin; Konoplya, Zabarnyi, Matviyenko, Mykolenko; Zinchenko, Malinovskyi; Tsyhankov, Sudakov, Mudryk; Dovbyk

Ukraine Euro 2024 Set Piece Takers: 

• Penalties – Dovbyk
• Free Kicks – Mudryk/ Malinovskyi
• Corners – Mudryk/Sudakov

Ukraine Euro 2024 Top Fantasy Choices:

1. Artem Dovbyk (7.5 Fwd) – The Top Goal scorer in La Liga with the impressive Girona.

• He got 24 Goals, 8 Assists in 36 Games. 
• Had a mediocre Qualifying campaign with only 2 Goals in 10 Games.
• On Penalties too. Playing in this Group, will help him continue his red-hot form.

2. Mykhailo Mudryk (7 Mid) – Unlike his club Chelsea, Mudryk is absolutely nailed for the National Team. Watch out for his raw pace when Ukraine counterattacks.
   • Got 2 Goals and 2 Assists in Euro Qualifying. Can he finally have a breakthrough at the Euros?

3. Andrey Lunin (4.5 GK) – Ukraine are defensively solid in most games. Even against the Bigger teams they keep a solid shape and concede very few. Managed to keep out Germany in the recent friendly.

Marshalling the Defense will be the Confident Andrey Lunin who has had a brilliant season for Real Madrid. Has a good penalty-saving record with 8 out of 23 penalties saved. A Solid 4.5 Budget Goalkeeper for your Fantasy teams.

4. Notable Mentions – Georgiy Sudakov (6.5 Mid) – One of the most exciting Youth prospects coming out of Ukraine. Many big clubs are already monitoring him like Arsenal, Juventus and Chelsea. On Corners and the creative force of the team. Watch out for him at the Euros this summer.

ROMANIA

Can they repeat the Heroics of the Euros in 2000 where they made it out of a Group containing Germany, England, and Portugal?

• FIFA World Ranking – 46
• Qualification Record – W6, D4, L0
• Goals For – 16
• Goals Against – 5

Strengths:

The Defensive solidity that this Romanian team showed in the European Qualifiers was an eye-opener. Only conceding 5 Goals in 10 Games and finishing unbeaten above Switzerland showed how much they have improved in leaps and bounds since the last Euros where they finished rock bottom in their Group.

Weaknesses:

Their main problem is scoring Goals as witnessed in the Qualifiers where they only managed 16 in 10 Games. None of their attacking players strike fear in the heart of opposition defenders. Their best chance to score goals would be from set pieces or on counters and hold on for to that lead. Their lack of possession in most games, even against mediocre opposition could come back to haunt them.

Romania Euro 2024 Predicted Lineup:

• Moldovan has always been reliable for his coach and will likely start in Goal. The Back 4 should consist of Bancu, Burca, Dragusin and Ratiu.
• Marius Marin and Razvan Marin are more defensive-minded midfield options likely to play in the Engine room of the Midfield. 
• The creative playmaker will most certainly be Captain Stanciu. The Front 3 is a tricky call to make with in form Dennis Man and Florinel Coman expected to start on the wings. 
• Up front the more exciting George Puscas could start or the more experienced Denis Alibec could be told to lead the front line.

Romania predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Moldovan; Ratiu, Dragusin, Burca, Bancu; M. Marin, R. Marin; Man/Hagi, Stanciu, Coman; Puscas/Alibec

Romania Euro 2024 Set Piece Takers: 

• Penalties – R.Marin
• Free Kicks – Stanciu
• Corners – Stanciu

Romania Euro 2024 Top Fantasy Choices:

1. Nicusor Bancu (4 Def) – Another Budget Gem in Defense that too playing for a Defensive Minded Team. 

• But wait, he is no slouch at the back. Loves to go forward and got 2 Goals and 9 Assists for his club. He also averaged around 6.3 Ball Recoveries during the Qualifiers.

2. Nicolae Stanciu (5.5 Mid) – The Most Nailed Attacking option from Romania is their Captain. Stanciu got 3 Goals in the Qualifiers and loves to shoot for fun. He averaged 2.9 Shots per game.

• Also on all set pieces and perhaps even on Penalties. He also averaged 2.6 Balls Recovered per game.

3. Horatiu Moldovan (4 Gk) – With all the 4 Million Goalkeeper Options falling like flies, Moldovan may be one of the last men standing. If he ends up starting for this Defensive-Minded Romania team, he could well become everyone’s Cheap Goalkeeper. He kept 5 Clean Sheets in the 8 Qualifiers he played.
4. Notable Mentions – Radu Dragusin (4.5 Def) – A more familiar name to us after his move to Spurs last summer. Dragusin is the most nailed defender in the team having started all 10 Qualifiers. A Ball Recovery Machine with an average of 6.1 per game in the Qualifiers. Also, a big threat at set pieces.

SLOVAKIA

The Only Pot 5 Team to Qualify for the Euros, can Slovakia punch above their weight to reach the Knockouts?

• FIFA World Ranking – 48
• Qualification Record – W7, D1, L2
• Goals For – 17
• Goals Against – 8

Strengths:

A reliable core of players have done an incredible job under their New Manager to finish as the only Team from POT 5 to qualify for the Euros. Their strength lies in their Defensive solidity with only 8 Goals conceded in 10 Games, that too in a Qualifying group which contained Attacking powerhouse Portugal (Portugal won 1-0 and 3-2), which shows how rugged Slovakia has become nowadays. Their Midfield trio of Lobotka, Kucka, and Duda have huge experience which should help them when the going gets tough.

Weaknesses:

The Attack is their Weak point, similar to Group Rivals Romania. 17 Goals in 10 Games is not a good showing. They will have to rely on their Defense to bail them out of a tough situation in most games.

Slovakia Euro 2024 Predicted Lineup:

• Dubravka will start as the Goalkeeper with a Back 4 marshalled by the Experienced leader Skriniar and his partner in crime Vavro. Attack-minded Hancko will play on the left with 1 of Pekarik/Gyomber to start on the right.
• The Experienced Midfield trio of Lobotka, Kucka and Duda will control the tempo of the game.  
• Further forward, Haraslin will start on the left and Suslov on the right. Bozenik will lead the line as the Central Striker.

Slovakia predicted XI (4-3-3): Dubravka; Pekarik/Gyomber, Vavro, Skriniar, Hancko; Kucka, Lobotka, Duda; Haraslin, Bozenik, Suslov

Slovakia Euro 2024 Set Piece Takers: 

• Penalties – Duda
• Free Kicks – Duda
• Corners – Haraslin

Slovakia Euro 2024 Top Fantasy Choices:

1. David Hancko (4.5 Def) – The Best Fantasy asset from Slovakia. In the last 10 Games for his club, he got 4 Goals, playing as a center-back with an average of 2.7 Shots per game.

• For his Country, he plays as a Left-Back and is given more freedom to bomb forward.
• Got 2 Goals and 3 Assists in Euro Qualifying.
• He averaged 1.7 Key Passes, 1.1 Shots and 4.4 Ball Recoveries per game. For this stubborn Slovakia side, he has multiple avenues to points.

2. Lukas Haraslin (6.5 Mid) – The Most Expensive Asset from Slovakia is also in the best form, attacking-wise.

• Got 16 Goals for his club and got 3 Goals and 1 Assist in the Euro Qualifiers by playing only in 5 Games.

3. Martin Dubravka  (4.5 Gk) – Another Budget route into the Slovak defense. An experienced Goalkeeper who is a brilliant shot-stopper. In fact, he finished with the 2^nd most saves in Euro Qualifying among the Nations which qualified.

• Having a stable defense ahead of him, helps his cause, something which he did not have for his club Newcastle this season.
• Combining his save points with a lucky clean sheet will surely bring a good haul for your Fantasy teams.

4. Notable Mentions – Juraj Kucka (5.5 Mid) – An all-round player playing in the Center of the park for his Country.

• Got 2 Goals and 2 Assists in the Euro Qualifiers with the highest number of shots taken from his team. Loves a long-range shot.
• Also decent Ball Recovery potential with an average of 4 Balls Recovered per game.
