The 2020/21 FPL season has been to a crazy start which has put a lot of managers on a tough spot. The total Wildcard used since the start stands at 1,596,434 out of the 7 Million registered managers up until GW4 this just shows how tough the start to the 2020/21 FPL season has been so far. Now that we have somewhat decent trends on how the teams are playing, which players to target and whom to avoid, GW5 does seem a good time to work out the perfect squad for the upcoming weeks. In this blog I’ll be elaborating in detail on the players to watch out on a wildcard and subsequently offer tips, finally revealing my Wildcard team.

FPL GW5 Wildcard Strategy:
This season has been goals galore so far with clean sheets hard to come by. The new handball rule of course has resulted in more penalties further diminishing the clean sheet potential. There have been 25 penalties being awarded from 37 games, 0.67 penalties per game which is almost a three-fold increase from the last season. So my plan majorly is to load up on the attack with four premium midfielders (>7.5 Mil) and two proven forwards (>7.0 Mil). The defense will be light which means no TAA/Robbo. Don’t worry the blog covers how you can get TAA/Robbo and still build a good WC team as well!
Goalkeepers to consider if you’re playing wildcard in FPL GW5
Aston Villa have kept two clean sheets in their opening three games and look solid defensively. The addition of Martinez has further strengthened their defense. Villa have conceded just 5 big chances and have an xGC of 4.24 from three games. Only three teams have recorded Big chances conceded and xGC number less than Villa so far from this season. Martinez (£4.7) has made a respectable nine saves from three games and is the highest-scoring FPL goal keeper so far this season(22) having played a game less.

Defenders to consider if you’re playing wildcard in FPL GW5
There have been just 17 clean sheets in 37 games so far this season, showing how much of a struggle it is to keep a CS this season. Hence for the same reason i’ll be going light on defense and spending big in midfield. Having said that a defense of Lamptey, Mitchell, Dallas, Chilwell and KWP looks good as all of them are starting currently and have had at least one CS or attacking return so far this season.
Dallas (£4.5) is the one who has caught my eye, the Leeds fullback has recorder the most shots on target (4), Highest xG (1.21), most big chances (2) among defenders. He has also recorded an xA of 0.59, made two key passes, and created one big chance accumulating an xPts of 24.2 which is more than double of the 11 points he has scored. and no other defenders has such a difference.
Ben Chilwell (£5.6) made his PL Debut for Chelsea in style having played a part in both the open play goals Chelsea scored against Crystal palace in FPL GW4. Chilwell recorded a goal, assist, clean sheet, three bonus netting 18 points in total making him the highest-scoring defender in GW4. Chilwell played higher up the pitch and with some good fixtures for Chelsea he seems to be a better option than a Wolves defender.
Wolves have looked a bit shaky defensively this season having conceded 49 shots of which 20 were on target, only Whipping boys Fulham, WBA, Fulham have conceded more.
Lamptey(£4.7) and KWP (£4.5) take up the budget defenders spot. KWP has registered an assist and two CS in the opening four games and Lamptey has been one of the brightest players for Brighton having registered three assists and has won two penalties already and it’s hard to look beyond the two. Mitchell (£4.1) takes up the last defender spot although he could lose his spot to PVA who is coming back from injury. But ward playing well and lack of clarity on Ferguson means we have little choice here.
Few other defenders to consider other than the obvious TAA/Robbo include Castange, Ayling, Digne all of whom are good choices. As I mentioned earlier, going without TAA/Robbo is a gamble I’m willing to take and the forwards eight should justify. So don’t judge my selections so far and keep reading!
Injury Update: Ben Chilwell has returned early from England duty due to a repeat of the foot issue that kept him out for a while. He’ll stay on my team till Frank’s PC. If he’s indeed ruled out Castange, Semedo could be the likely replacement.

Midfielders to consider if you’re playing wildcard in FPL GW5
King Mo (£12.2) and KDB (£11.6) have FPL royalty and they retain their places in my team. No biggie here. Salah has scored five goals already this season and has registered 19 shots on goal, 15 inside box, seven on target, and has had 4 big chances accumulating an xG of 3.23. Not just this his creativity has also seen a spark, he has recorded 14 key passes (Join highest with KDB) created three big chances registering an xA of 2.25 a number only bettered by Kane.
Again just like Salah, KDB doesn’t need much of an explanation, he is a proven FPL asset and has had a decent start to the season with a goal and assist in three games. Although i fully expect him to increase his FPL returns in the coming weeks. KDB has registered 14 key passes (Highest so far this season) which is again an indication that his attacking returns are bound to increase.
Injury Update: KDB was substituted for Belgium on 73 minutes vs England on Sunday and has left the Belgium camp to be back at Man City. But this shouldn’t be a major issue and he’ll be most likely fit for FPL GW5 just like his teammate, Raheem Sterling. We’ll keep this area updated just in case he’s ruled out. If he’s out then a straight swap to Sterling should be the best option.
James Rodriguez (£7.8). The Everton midfielder has simply been too good. James netted two goals plus an assist against Brighton in GW4 for a monster haul of 18 points. He’s been the chief creator for Everton having carved out four big chances (most for a midfielder) and made 12 key passes, creating a solid impact on the Everton attack. He’s not just creating chances but also finishing them having had 10 shots on goal with four on target, resulting in three goals.
Son(£9.0) is the highest-scoring FPL player so far this season having registered 45 points in just 4 games more than 11 PPG. He’s also the most brought FPL asset with close to a million managers bringing in the Spurs attacker. Son has received six big chances and has registered 10 shots on goal with seven on target, registering six goals in the process. This is just a clear indicator of how clinical Son has been in front of the goal and with Kane creating a lot of chances and bale potentially starting from the RW, son will look to continue his impressive goal scoring form
The midfield is complete with Soucek (£4.9) taking the fifth midfielder spot. The towering hammers midfielder has recorder numbers that are outstanding for a 4.9 Mil midfielder. He has had 12 shots on goal and an xG of 1.10, the highest numbers in PL without scoring a goal so far this season and I fully expect him to get a goal or two soon. Hammers fixtures are quite easy from GW8 onwards and I don’t find a better value player than Soucek at £4.9 Mil.
Few other midfielders to consider if you’re on a wildcard, Jack Grealish (£7.1 Mil) could be a very good option. The villa captain is also their talisman and has been very good so far this season. I’ll strongly recommend him if you’re on a wildcard as Villa have a couple of pretty good fixtures to back up his good form as well.

Strikers to consider if you’re playing wildcard in FPL GW5
Dominic Calvert Lewin (£7.6) has scored 50% of those netting six times for the Toffees so far this season. He’s currently owned by 48.4% of managers and is continuously increasing in price at a rapid pace having started the season at £7.0m.
DCL is the second-highest scoring FPL forward so far this season with 37 points, only Harry Kane has scored more points. DCL has recorded 15 shots on goal, 13 from inside the box, 9 on target and has had six big chances with an xG of 3.39 so far season. These are mouth-watering numbers for a budget forward and with Everton not looking like slowing down he is pretty much an essential in our FPL teams.
Kane (£10.6) has been flourishing this season and has been stellar having scored three goals and racked up six assists. He’s not just scoring but creating goals, he’s in fact just one shy of his highest assist tally in a PL campaign and we’re just four games into the season. Kane has created six big chances, the highest in PL so far this season, and has registered an xA of 3.20 which is again the most by any player. He has also recorded 19 shots on goal, 10 shots on target, and has had five big chances himself making him the second-highest scoring player just a point less than Son.
I’m out of budget by now and the only man who can rescue me is Brewster (£4.5) his high money move to Sheffield should mean he’ll start most games and he does rotate well with Soucek giving me the freedom to rotate between the duo. Not much of stats to add on Brewster, just vibes and hopes that he’ll be a similar asset to Greenwood last season.
If Aguero(£10.3) is deemed fit ahead of GW5 I’ll be tempted to swap Kane to Aguero. We all know how deadly Aguero can be with KDB behind him.
Few other strikers to consider, Neal Maupay (£6.6 Mil), Callum Wilson (£6.5 Mil), Ollie Watkins (£5.9 Mil) all have scored more than three goals this season. Maupay and Wilson are on penalties as well and any one of the three could be good budget striker options on a wildcard. Danny Ings (£8.5 Mil) and Raul Jimenez (£8.6 Mil) are again worth candidates in the mid-priced forwards.

If you’re interested in getting one of TAA or Robbo in your FPL GW5 Squad:
Instead of going with four premium midfielders, you can remove one premium midfielder to a 5.5 Million ish midfielder like Klich, Costa, Saint-Maximin, and upgrade Chilwell to TAA or Robbo.
Another combination is that you can switch Kane to Jimenez or Ings and those two extra million will help you get TAA or Robbo IN. Combination highlighted on the left.
Another strategy could be removing Kane to Wilson and getting Maupay for Brewster this allows Robbo or Trent again. Combination highlighted on the right.
My main team and the alternative combinations all have 14 regular starters except the goal keeper as this season is hampered by COVID-19 it is important to have a playing bench and at the same time not over strengthening the bench is key.
