Comparison of Best FPL Triple Captain Options in FPL DGW22/23

With only 40% of the current top 10K and 32% overall having already used the Triple Captain, plenty of managers will be asking themselves when the next good time is to activate the chip. The original plan for most managers was to wait until DGW23 to TC Haaland, but with DGW22 for Manchester United, their attackers Rashford and Bruno Fernandes have entered the Triple captain discussion. In this column, @FPLPAZ analyzes the pros and cons of managers using the FPL triple captain chip on a Manchester United Attacker in FPL DGW22 or waiting until FPL DGW23 with Haaland. Triple Captain Marcus Rashford in FPL DGW22?

DGW22 – Crystal Palace (H) + Leeds (H)

GW 22 Projected Points: 10.1

Rashford has been in insane form since the FPL restart in GW 17, with 6 attacking returns and a 0.73 xGI per 90 mins. With an upcoming home DGW against two of the worst defenses in the league (bottom 5 in xGC) Rashford is a legitimate triple-captain option. What I like about Rashford as a triple captain option is that he has everything in the triple captain recipe (form + fixtures + nailedness + midfielder).

The downside of captaining Rashford is, of course, the risk of missing a Haaland haul, as Rashford only has 2 matches all season with multiple attacking returns. Nonetheless, Rashford checks all boxes to be a triple captain option, so managers should feel confident in activating the TC chip for Rashford as that high-reward explosive option.

Pros	Cons
He has great form, with 6 attacking returns in his last six league matches.	Less haul potential than Haaland, with 4 double-digit hauls in the season and only 2 matches all season with multiple attacking returns.
Faces two of the bottom 5 defenses in the league in xGC and chances conceded down Rashford’s flank.	Not great for bonus points only picking up bonus points 4 times this season.
Two home games (MUN rank 5^th best in NPxG at home)	Overperforming his underlying stats since the GW17 Restart (+0.32 in xG per 90 Mins).
Midfielder so gets extra points for Goals and Clean Sheets.	May face reduced minutes with the fixture pileup for Manchester United.

Triple Captain Bruno Fernandes in FPL DGW22?

DGW22 – Crystal Palace (H) + Leeds (H)

GW 22 Projected Points: 9.2

With a 19-point haul in DGW20, managers are flocking at not only the idea of bringing in Bruno Fernandes into their GW22 teams but also activating the triple captain chip on the Portuguese maestro. Fernandes has a lot going for him as a Triple Captain option given his current form (5 attacking returns since GW17), facing 2 bottom 5 defenses, and him being historically great in DGWs (4 double-digit hauls in 8 career DGWs).

However, I do dislike that his output is mainly made up of assists, and he might not even be on penalties anymore. Managers looking at Bruno should be wary of their expectations as he only hasdouble-digitgit hauls all season. That being said, Bruno should be guaranteed points this DGW, so he is the safer less explosive option in DGW22.

Pros	Cons
Nailed for 90 minutes and on some set pieces.	Overperforming his underlying stats in his current run of form for both xG and xA.
Faces two of the bottom 5 defenses in the league in xGC.	Uncertainty about whether he still is on penalties (Rashford took the last one).
Great form since the FPL restart with 5 attacking returns (2 goals and 3 assists).	Less of a goal threat, with only 4 goals all season and a 0.44 xGI per 90 minutes.
Historically good in DGWs, with double digits in 4 of his 8 career DGWs.	Less explosiveness, with only 2 double-digit hauls all season.

Triple Captain Erling Haaland in FPL DGW23?

DGW23 – Aston Villa (H) + Arsenal (A)

GW23 Projected Points: 12.0

Haaland has been the ultimate cheat code this season, so plenty of managers have planned to use their triple-captain chip on him. For many, the question was not who but when. Now that DGW20 passed, the managers who did not pull the trigger are looking at using it on Haaland for his DGW23. I do like this option more now, given that Haaland will most likely start both games, as City have a one-week rest between their FA cup match and the Villa match.

Then he will certainly start against league-leading Arsenal. Haaland has the haul potential to really skyrocket you through the ranks with 7 double-digit hauls this season. What I do worry with using the TC chip on Haaland is that he could face reduced minutes in the Aston Villa match before facing the stout Arsenal defense. Nonetheless, if you want both a safe and explosive option, then Haaland is your perfect mix in GW23, as he could easily score over 20 points.

Pros	Cons
Haul potential with 7 double-digit hauls this season	Lowered Expected Minutes with Pep focusing more on the tougher Arsenal fixture.
One week rest before the easier fixture against Aston Villa, so he should start both games in the DGW.	Faces Arsenal, which is the 2^nd toughest defense in the league. And Aston Villa, who have the 6^th lowest xGC over the last 6 GWs.
Great underlying stats with a 1.08 xGI per 90 minutes since the restart.	City has been a bit sluggish in past games, which could translate to the DGW and lowered production for Haaland.
Probably the last time to TC Haaland in a DGW since he will not have many left with as high expected minutes.	Forward, not a midfielder, so harder to rack up a big score. (not that it matters as much with Haaland)

Conclusion on the comparison:

The triple captain chip is not as strong as you may think, so using it soon would be ideal, and then you can just focus on when to use the other chips. That being said, I do like Haaland in DGW23 as the best option, given his explosiveness and track record all season. Then, a close second would be using the TC chip with Rashford, as he has the form and fixture you look for in a triple captain. Lastly, I would put Bruno Fernandes as his ceiling is not as high as the other two options.
