UCL Fantasy Matchday 6 Tips: Strategy, Top Picks, & Captaincy

The final UCL matchday is upon us and it is time to go for broke before we reset and move towards the Knockout Stage. For those who are unaware, prior to the Knockout Stage (which begins in mid-February) everyone gets unlimited transfers and an increased budget of 105 million. So, we are playing a one-week game at this point. In this UCL Fantasy Matchday 6 blog, let’s look at the meta strategy, top picks by position, and captaincy for UCL Fantasy MD6.

UCL Fantasy Matchday 6 Tips

Meta Strategy

There are a few things to keep in mind going into Matchday 6. First off, there will likely be a lot of rotation for the teams who have already qualified for the Knockout Stage – especially those who have clinched first place in their group. The following teams have clinched first place: Bayern, Chelsea, and Manchester City. I would expect mass rotation from these sides, as this result is close to meaningless for them. The following teams have advanced to the Knockout Stage in second place: Dortmund and Inter. I would also expect mass rotation from these sides, as they cannot change their position in the table. I would certainly not target any players from these teams with my transfers in this Matchday.

Instead, there are two groups of teams that I would target with my transfers. The following teams have advanced to the Knockout Stage and are yet to clinch first place: Benfica, Club Brugge, Liverpool, Napoli, Porto, PSG, and Real Madrid. These teams may rotate a bit but will generally put out a first-choice squad, as they look to finish in first place in their group. Pay attention to any team. The following sides can either qualify for the Knockout Stage or be eliminated: AC Milan, Frankfurt, Marseille, RB Leipzig, RB Salzburg, Shakhtar, Sporting, and Spurs. If you like their fixture target these clubs, as they will be going all out to win.

The unnamed clubs – those who will either finish third or fourth in their group – are not players to target with transfers. They are good to play if you already own them, but I would not be actively seeking to buy players from these clubs. However, they are also not teams to target against, as they will either be playing for Europa League qualification or for pride. The Champions League is the biggest competition these clubs will play in, so even if they are disqualified, they will put up a good fight.

Another note is that hits (-4 transfers) are less justifiable because you have less time to make those points back. Especially in UCL Fantasy, where we can sub in players between Tuesday and Wednesday, you only need 11 or 12 players to play in total in order to be alright. If you have injuries or players who will be rotated, you don’t need to panic and sell them all for -4 points. Use all your free transfers, but only take hits if you think the player you are bringing in has a high enough ceiling to justify a -4. I am not saying to not take hits – they can pay off when done right – I am just saying to be extra-careful with which ones you take this Matchday.

As always, make use of early team news, Matchday substitutions, and captain switches. The early games on Tuesday this Matchday are Leverkusen-Brugge and Porto-Atletico, so we will see their lineups before the deadline. On Tuesday before the deadline, also be make sure to check for team news – either on Twitter or here on AllAboutFPL.

UCL Fantasy Matchday 6 Top Picks by Position

Goalkeepers

UCL Fantasy Matchday 6 Top Picks by Position ~ Goal keeper ~ Diogo Costa

Let me make this clear, you should not be spending transfers on goalkeepers this Matchday. Unless you own a goalkeeper that is injured (I don’t even know of any that are) or someone like Ederson, who could be benched for Ortega, do not use your transfers on a goalkeeper. If you really want to transfer in a goalkeeper for any reason, I like Hugo Lloris (5.5 m) or the penalty-saving legend Diogo Costa (5.1 m) on Tuesday and Thibault Courtois (6.0 m) or Kepa (4.5 m) on Wednesday.

Defenders

UCL Fantasy Matchday 6 Top Picks by Position ~ Defender ~ Alejandro Grimaldo

With defenders, it is a similar story with a few exceptions. Unless a defender has goal or assist potential, you likely want to refrain from transferring them in. If you bring in a defender, you want them to have as high of a ceiling as potential midfielders and forwards you could bring in instead. My favorite defender picks on Tuesday are Ivan Perisic (6.0 m)/Matt Doherty (4.9 m), Pedro Porro (5.1 m), and Mohamed Simakan (4.7 m). My favorite defender picks on Wednesday are Theo Hernandez (5.9 m) and Alejandro Grimaldo (5.3 m).

Midfielders

UCL Fantasy Matchday 6 Top Picks by Position ~ Midfielder ~ Mykhailo Mudryk

Midfielders and forwards with high upside are the players we really want to be chasing with one Matchday to go. For both days, I’ll give my favorite option at various price points – as many people will be restricted by budget. On Tuesday, my favorite midfield picks are Mohamed Salah (11.1 m), Daichi Kamada (7.0 m), and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (5.8 m). On Wednesday, my favorite midfield picks are Vinicius Junior (10.0 m), Rodrygo (8.0 m), and Mykhailo Mudryk (6.3 m).

Forwards

UCL Fantasy Matchday 6 Top Picks by Position ~ Forwards ~ Rafael Leao

Lastly, the forwards. 62% of UCL Fantasy players own Erling Haaland (foot injury) and another 34% own Robert Lewandowski (reported he will not travel). So, a forward of any price is on the table for many of us. On Tuesday, my favorite forward picks are Harry Kane (10.5 m) and Giacomo Raspadori (7.2 m). On Wednesday, my favorite forward picks are Rafael Leao (8.5 m) and Julian Alvarez (5.9 m).

UCL Fantasy Matchday 6 Captaincy

UCL Fantasy Matchday 6 Captaincy ~ Mo Salah ~ Day one

Captaincy is not very easy this Matchday, as many of the best usual captains are subject to rotation. With captaincy, we ideally want to be targeting a player who has high expected minutes on a team who has something to play for. On Tuesday, my favorite captaincy options are Mohamed Salah (MID, 11.1 m, 10% TSB) or Harry Kane (FWD, 10.5 m, 3% TSB). My favorite differential captain on Tuesday (besides Kane) would either be Giacomo Raspadori (FWD, 7.2 m, 3% TSB) or one of Ivan Perisic (DEF, 6.0 m, 7% TSB)/Matt Doherty (DEF, 4.9 m, 0% TSB).

UCL Fantasy Matchday 6 Captaincy ~ Vinicius Junior ~ Day 2

On Wednesday, my favorite captaincy option is Vinicius Junior (MID, 10.0 m, 32% TSB). My favorite differential captain on Wednesday would be Rodrygo (MID, 8.0 m, 4% TSB). If you have to captain someone on Wednesday, I would play it safe and captain one of the Real Madrid guys – assuming we don’t get news that either won’t play.
