FPL GW21 Wildcard Team Reveal | Best Wildcard Draft

The recent Gameweeks have served up a sizable helping of chaos for FPL managers. A total of 21 games (and counting) have been postponed between GW 16 and the time of writing, due largely to the ongoing Corona Virus pandemic. Whilst this has decimated a number of teams and left many managers licking their wounds, it may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. We’re now going to see numerous extra double Gameweeks and in all likelihood, many of the rearranged games will be taking place sooner rather than later.

Note: The blog was written on 30/12/21 prior to the announcements of Double game weeks but it has been now announced that Westham, Brentford and Everton double in FPL DGW21. The Leicester vs Norwich, Southampton vs Newcastle game has been postponed at the time of writing. Dennis is also now not going to AFCON so we’ll suggest him over King whom we had mentioned below. As per the fixture Guru Ben Crellin, a number of the postponed fixtures will go into Gameweeks 21 and 22 and this has left a number of managers reassessing chip strategy. Although there is no confirmation of any matches as of yet, a mixture of assumption and hints from managers has given a decent inkling as to which games are going into the upcoming GWS. Chances are that by the time you’re reading this, an announcement may even have been made regarding where the postponed fixtures will be going.

Here are my updated predictions for the DGW fixtures in GWs 21+22

Why wildcard now in FPL GW21?

In theory wildcarding with 18 gameweeks remaining might not seem optimal, particularly with the current situation dictating that there is plenty of scope of drastic change further into the season. However, as we don’t yet know how many blanks and doubles the FA cup quarter finals will throw up, it may be wise to get the bench boost out of the way now while we know what we’re dealing with rather than waiting it out for further into the season.

To add appeal, the introduction of a second free hit should mean that it becomes easier to navigate problems you may face down the line. GW30 and GW36 are likely to be the biggest blank and double GW respectively as it stands. You could now maximize both of those by deploying free hits so saving the wildcard won’t be as necessary.

As such, I’ll be creating this draft based on the assumption that you’re wildcarding with a view to bench boost in GW22. Whether or not you are playing that chip, it will but of the utmost importance to have a squad of 15 playing players given the current circumstances surrounding the Corona Virus.

So without further ado, let’s delve into an FPL GW21 wildcard draft. I’ll start by outlining the teams that are in pole position to have DGWs in the foreseeable future.

Firstly, the teams still in Europe will be prioritized so as not to create a backlog for them down the line. Tottenham Vs Leicester and Leicester Vs Everton can both be expected to fall into GW21 and 22. Man United’s assignment with Brentford may also find its way into GW22 as could Brighton Vs Chelsea.

The latter would originally have been played in GW24 but Chelsea’s participation in the Club World Cup as meant that this too will have to be rearranged. Southampton manager Ralph Hassen-Huttl hinted that their postponed fixture Vs Brentford after their FA cup fixtures so we can assume this too would fall into GW21. As for the rest of the fixtures, they could go anywhere The teams not participating in Europe will have plenty of free mid-weeks later in the season but it may still be wise to bring their fixtures forward in case of any further postponements later on.

FPL GW21 Wildcard Draft

FPL GW21 Wildcard Goal keepers:

David De Gea £5.2M and Robert Sanchez £4.6M.

Both Man United and Brighton have multiple games that need rearranging. Furthermore, both teams, particularly United, have fixtures you’d expect them to keep clean sheets in over the upcoming period. Although £9.8M may seem a little excessive I believe it will be a worthwhile long-term investment given the points potential.

FPL GW21 Wildcard Defenders:

Moving on to the defense, there are a couple of default picks that require little explanation. Trent Alexander Arnold £8.1M and Joao Cancelo £6.9M are in the vast majority of teams already but if for whatever reason you do not currently own them, they should be 2 of the first names in your squad. The solidity of their team’s defenses combined with their attacking threat makes them as close to essential as anybody can be in this game.

Ben Davies £4.6M:

As discussed above, Tottenham are very likely to double in GW22. Given they have a total of 3 games that need rescheduling, along with their improvement defensively under Konte, it would be remiss to go without some investment. Sergio Reguillon is undoubtedly the best option due to his attacking threat, but this draft is fairly stretched for budget.

Although Eric Dier is more nailed than Davies, he offers almost no attacking threat whilst Davies can contribute the odd goal or assist and should still play most matches.

Ben White £4.5M:

Arsenal are one of the teams who have 3 games to be rescheduled. Their fixtures with Wolves, Liverpool and Chelsea all have to be rearranged for various reason. This, coupled with the fact that they have 3 clean sheets in their last 4 games suggests it would be wise to have one of their assets. In this case, White is the in simply because he is the cheapest He has played every league game he has been available for so he is as nailed in this team as anybody.

Mathew Lowton £4.5M:

Burnley have 4 games in hand on some teams so numerous doubles are very likely over the coming gameweeks. They are likely to have their postponed fixture with Watford brought into GW21 and others will probably follow suit. as we know, they have traditionally been good value defensively. Lowton provides the most attacking threat, not that he has much competition here, so he gets the nod.

FPL GW21 Wildcard Midfielders

Raheem Sterling £10.7M:

With Mohamed Salah absent for the next couple of gameweeks, the easiest way to go back to him once he returns is by having someone around a similar price in your side for a couple of weeks. Sterling has been FPL’s forgotten man in many ways. It’s fair to say he hasn’t justified his lofty price in the last season and a half However, 37 points in his last 4 starts including two double-digit returns in that time may be a sign that he is getting back to his best. He seems to be back in favor with Guardiola now and is set to start against Arsenal on the weekend as he was rested in mid-week so he could be the perfect short-term punt until Salah returns.

Hueng Min Son £10.5M:

As previously mentioned, the multitude of fixtures Tottenham have to be rescheduled dictates that it is imperative to include some of their sets and Son is by far and away the form player there at the moment. He has returned in each of the last 5 games he has played with one double-digit haul in there as well. Moreover, he is arguably the best choice for captaincy this week as he faces a Watford side who have failed to keep a clean sheet all season and Salah has a potentially difficult task at Chelsea.

Diogo Jota £8.1M:

Another player whose selection requires little explanation. Previously a rotation risk, Jota now seems to be in Liverpool’s best 11. At his price, given where he is playing and the form he is in, he is a no-brainer if you don’t already own him. Klopp has also been more inclined to keep him on the pitch for 90 minutes in recent matches whereas he was regularly being substituted shortly after the hour mark in the past, further cementing his status as being an extremely important member of the Liverpool team.

Jarrod Bowen £6.5M:

The West Ham midfielder has been one of the breakout options this season. Having shown glimpses of form in the past, a sustained run of form has resulted in him being in the thoughts of many managers. His 14 point haul against Watford in GW20 only added credence to his credibility as an option. West Ham have a fixture against Norwich to be rearranged. If that falls into GW22, their double of Leeds and Norwich as arguably the best of any team.

Kiernan Dewsburey-Hall £4.4M:

The Leicester starlet has been touted by many around the club as one of the brightest prospects in their academy. He broke into the side as a started a few weeks ago and has particularly impressed in matches against Manchester City and Liverpool, grabbing an assist in the second. A combination of his form and Leicester’s thin squad at the moment should ensure that he remains a starter. With plenty of doubles to come, he could prove great value and could quite conceivably be a starter in some weeks despite his price. It should be noted that the Norwich game this week won’t be going ahead due to covid cases.

FPL GW21 Wildcard Forwards

Cristiano Ronaldo £12.5M:

As alluded to earlier, United are one of the teams who will be a priority for fixture arrangements. With 3 fixtures to be rearranged and their involvement in the Champion’s League, their doubles will probably take place in the near future. Even without the extra games, their run of fixtures is by far the most appealing and he is the standout attacking option at United right now. With the likes of Sancho and Bruno Fernandes misfiring, Ronaldo has been the focal point of their attack and is involved more often than not when they score.

Josh King £5.8M:

King has very much been overshadowed by Emanuel Dennis thus far despite boasting better underlying statistics. However, with the Latter going to Afcon after this week’s contest with Tottenham, it would be inadvisable to hold him through this period if you own, especially as Watford could have multiple double gameweeks, with an outside possibility of a triple. As such, a sideways move to King seems the best option.

Armando Broja £5.2M:

The striker on loan from Chelsea appears to have made one of the two forward spots his own. Having bagged 3 returns in his last 3 fixtures, he is beginning to show signs of consistent end product. It should be noted that their fixture against Newcastle on Sunday probably won’t go ahead so he may have a blank GW, but there are strong rumors their game with Brentford could go into 21 so he would still have a game. He is easily benchable at his price depending on the difficulty of his fixture.

This team exceeds the £100M budget by some distance, but chances are your team value is sufficient to fit everyone in. You may already have substantial value built up in some of these players, Alexander Arnold, Cancelo, and Jota to name but a few. Thus, this team should be affordable. If however, you do not have the budget, I would venture that the best downgrade without massively handicapping your team would be by going from Bowen to Gabriel Martinelli £5.4M who has emerged as a brilliant option, scoring four times and assisting twice in his last 7 appearances.
