If you would ask anyone who is into FPL, what is the best time to play the wildcard and reset your team, you would most likely end up with mixed opinions. Taking the decision to play wildcard is a tough one often you feel you have a solid team but still won’t be getting the returns or in some case it might be the case of injuries causing a chaos in your squad, the international break might be a safe option to play the wildcard as you get quality time to access players and arrive at a good squad, so let’s look into how to play wildcard wisely during the international break.
If your squad isn’t getting points to put you higher up in the ranking it could well be because of one of the following reasons!
- Captain picks going wrong!
- Going heavy in defense( 5 defenders and four defenders strategy)
- Ignoring the importance of budget forwards
- Not having a solid bench to rotate your squad based on fixtures
- Sticking with players who have poor or zero returns this season
5 things to consider while playing wildcard:
- Do not invest lot of your budget in defense:
The season began with so many managers arriving at the conclusion that the defense would have a good value and went with a 5 man defense strategy and included as many as three premium defenders(5.5 mil+), but as the season progressed it is evident that the number of clean sheets have reduced drastically, so play your wildcard smartly in a way that you pick two premium defenders and three budget defenders and rotate them accordingly

2.Go light with your goalkeepers:
Going with expensive goalkeepers will create an headache if they loss the cleansheet the possibility of save points are always low and you don’t want your 6 MIL keeper return 1 or 2 points which does not provide value for money considering the investment. going with two 4.5 mil keepers will allow you to rotate based on fixtures and save at least 1 MIL

3. Midfield should be a mixture of premium, mid priced and budget midfielders:
It is understandable that you cannot own all the premium midfielders together in your squad and if you try so it would disturb squad balance massively, so it is essential to strike a balance when it comes to your midfielders
Possible midfielders combinations:
- 3 Premium midfielders ( 9 mil +) and two budget midfielders ( 4.5-6 mil)
- 2 premium midfielders (9 mil+), 2 mid priced midfielders( 6.5-8.5 mil) and one budget midfielder (4.5-6 mil)
- if you want to go heavy on attack go with one premium midfielder ( 9 mil +) and 2 each of mid priced ( 5-8.5 mil) and budget assets (4.5 mil) but going by the season so far it is a combination to avoid!

ALLABOUTFPL VERDICT:
Playing wildcard is a tough business and you have to consider a lot of factors before you settle in a team and if you have two free transfers and to confused whether to play wildcard or not then it is better to use your free transfers and take a -4 in the worst case and save the wildcard. If the performance remains unsatisfactory then consider wildcarding the following GW
The key to a successful wildcard is that you’ll have to activate wildcard as early as possible which will help you work out all the possible combinations before, instead of just panicking before the deadline.
