Welcome to our FPL GW4 Scout Picks blog! The international break is over, which means it’s time to jump back into the world of FPL… Injuries over the international break, along with deadline day transfers, may have altered the makeup of your teams, so make sure to check and make changes accordingly before the GW4 deadline on Saturday at 11.00 AM.
Our Scout Picks scored 57 points in GW3, well above the top 10k average of 48. Somehow, despite picking a vastly different squad for GW3, the Official PL Scout also scored 57 points; our winning run is ended, but our unbeaten run lives on! If you’re counting, that makes it 2.5-0.5 to us…

FPL GW4 Scout Picks
FPL GW4 Scout Picks – Goalkeeper

Arsenal’s Raya (5.5m) makes his first appearance for the AAFPL Scout Picks team 25/26, with the Gunners facing Nottingham Forest at home in the early kick-off on Saturday afternoon. Arsenal have the second-best expected goals against in the league after 3 games (2.01xGA) and are one of a handful of teams to have only conceded one goal so far this season. In fact, the only goal that Arsenal have conceded thus far was Szoboszlai’s stunning free kick in GW3!
Arsenal under Arteta have been a solid defensive team for some time now, a trend that looks to be continuing into this season. As mentioned, they are facing another tough-to-beat side in Forest this weekend, only a few days after Forest’s owner decided to abruptly sack fan favourite manager Nuno Espirito Santo and replace him with Ange ‘it’s just who we are mate’ Postecoglou. This change will likely alter Forest’s style of play and could make them a ‘team to target’…
Ange’s style of play is vastly different from Nuno’s, and while some players (namely MGW, Anderson, and Hutchinson) may well become more attractive FPL assets because of this, many others (particularly the defenders) will become far less. Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see if Ange adapts his style of play to meet the needs of his squad, as he did in the Europa League towards the end of last season, but considering how little time he’s had with the team and Forest’s poor performance pre-international break, we’re backing Arsenal to keep them out…

FPL GW4 Scout Picks – Defenders

Our back three consists of Gabriel (6.1m), Munoz (5.5m), and VVD (6.0m).
An Arsenal defensive double-up is a very attractive prospect for FPL GW4 for all of the reasons outlined above. With Saliba’s injury, Gabriel is the most nailed Arsenal defensive option (along with Raya) and is therefore the safest pick for FPL GW4. Timber could also be considered, though with the Champions League getting underway between GW4 and GW5, Arsenal’s fullbacks are likely to be rotated from GW5 onwards. Due to the change in manager, system, style, and likely personnel, Arsenal’s defense is one to target for FPL GW4.

Munoz retains his spot in the AAFPL Scout Picks team as Palace face Sunderland at home in GW4. The Colombian wing-back has returned in each GW so far this season, managing 1 assist, 2 clean sheets, and 20 CBIT (2 DC points). He produced his best total of the season thus far against Villa in GW3, returning 9 points for the 11.5% of managers who own him.
Palace are another team that have conceded just 1 goal so far this season, though their underlying numbers suggest that they have been lucky not to concede more. The Eagles are one of only three teams that remain unbeaten going into GW3, and will be confident that they can continue in that vein as they face the newly promoted side, Sunderland, at home this weekend. He is one of the most attack-minded full-backs in the league and is part of one of the best defenses in the league – it’s that simple!
Finally, we have Liverpool captain VVD. Virgil has started the season decently from an FPL perspective, picking up the most points of any Liverpool defender over the first 3 GWs. This is, in large part, down to his immense CBIT numbers in GW1 and 2, with the Dutch CB achieving over 20 in GW1 and 15 in GW2. While he only managed 8 in GW3, he did hold his side to their first CS of the campaign against title rivals Arsenal so…
Liverpool have been quite poor defensively to start the season. Two new faces in the backline, plus rotation due to injury, has led to miscommunication and a bedding-in period which has not so far gone to plan. I am confident that this will improve, though, one needs only to look at the Arsenal match to see an improvement on the previous two fixtures. Furthermore, Liverpool have faced three of the best out-of-possession sides in the league in Newcastle, Bournemouth, and Arsenal, against poorer opposition, they will improve. On an unrelated note, the Reds face Burnley in GW3…

FPL GW4 Scout Picks – Midfielders

We’ve gone for a midfield 4 this week, including Salah (14.5m), Grealish (6.7m), Semenyo (7.4m), and Kudus (6.6m).
Salah returns to the team as the Reds take on Burnley away from home in GW4. Liverpool sit top of the league on maximum points after 3 GWs, and Salah has managed two attacking returns across those games. He scored a goal at the death against Bournemouth and an assist in added time against Newcastle before playing well but ultimately blanking against Arsenal.
Much has been made of the complexion of Liverpool’s attack going forward. How will Isak fit? Where will Gakpo play? Can Ekitike and Isak play together? etc., but none of these questions concern Salah. The Egyptian is the most nailed Liverpool attacker by some distance, and while I do think Ekitike and Gakpo are safe for now due to Isak’s lack of match fitness, it makes sense to go for the tried and tested Salah as our main Liverpool attacker for GW4. His underlying numbers are down on last season (so far), but as he adapts to a new role and new players around him, those numbers will surely increase.

From one end of Stanley park to the other, Everton’s Grealish is the next player on our list. The city loanee has managed to produce 4 attacking returns in his first 3 games for the Toffees and is already a firm fan favourite at the Hill Dickinson stadium! Grealish is clearly a talented player, and thrives in teams where he is afforded more time, space and flexibility on the ball and in possession. He was excellent at Villa a couple of years ago and is shining once again for Everton.
The Toffees face Villa, a side that are yet to win (and in fact yet to score), at home in GW4, and will fancy their chances. Emery’s side have struggled to create chances and look pretty lackluster in midfield and in attack – they will likely have to forgo some of their defensive solidity in order to regain their attacking flare. The villains are a team out of sorts and will travel to the Hill Dickinson to face an Everton team that are thriving following an injection of attacking talent over the summer. KDH is another great pick for this weekend, while Everton defenders should equally be considered, but for us Grealish is the best option!
Next up is Bournemouth’s Semenyo. With Sarr now injured, Semenyo has become the most popular midfield target over the international break. Bournemouth have demonstrated yet again that they are immune to a high turnover of players due to their manager’s phenomenal skills and the excellence of their scouting department. While their defense faced much change over the summer, their attack stayed largely the same, and Semenyo in particular has continued to thrive in Iraola’s attacking system.

Semenyo is, thus far, averaging 0.89xG/90 and 0.09xA/90, totalling 0.98xGI/90. He has managed to score 2 goals and assist a further one across the first three fixtures of the campaign. This follows from him scoring 11, assisting 5, and averaging 0.59xGI/90 last season. Clearly, his numbers are inflated and unsustainable – but it is important to target players who are in form! Bournemouth face Brighton this weekend, a side that have conceded 4 goals and almost 5xGA over their first 3 fixtures. Brighton will be no pushover, but Bournemouth look like a menacing side this year, in spite of their extraordinary turnover of players! Semenyo is in amazing form right now and has a decent run of games coming up so now might be the best time to buy.
Finally, let’s turn our attention to Mohammed Kudus. Spurs’ display in Gameweek 3 against Bournemouth was underwhelming to say the least. They managed to generate just 0.17 xG while allowing their opponents 2.12 xG, a stark contrast to the more promising attacking and defensive numbers we saw from them in the opening two gameweeks.
Looking ahead, Spurs face West Ham this weekend. Despite West Ham’s recent result against Nottingham Forest, they remain a side that can be targeted from an FPL perspective. Their defensive vulnerabilities have been exposed multiple times already this season, conceding 3 against Sunderland in GW1 and 5 against Chelsea in GW2, and this gives Kudus a platform to deliver.
From an FPL standpoint, Kudus is arguably Spurs’ most reliable attacker right now. He’s as close to “nailed” as anyone in their front line, and importantly, he also comes in at a lower price point than teammate Brennan Johnson. That combination of security of starts and value makes him a very attractive option in the short term, though his underlying numbers are concerning, and if he fails to deliver this week, then managers may start looking at other assets in the longer term…

FPL GW4 Scout Picks – Forwards

A front three of Ekitike (8.8m), Mateta (7.5m), and Joao Pedro (7.7m) completes the team!
Ekitike completes the Liverpool triple up, joining teammates Salah and VVD in our FPL GW4 Scout Picks team. He has scored the most points of any Liverpool player thus far this season and faces Burnley away from home in GW4. Despite what many are suggesting, Ekitike’s place in the team is safe for now, as Isak is lacking match fitness (as shown by his lack of minutes in the international break).

Furthermore, Ekitike has been in incredible form, and I doubt that Slot would want to damage his confidence and/or potentially harm the team by removing him in order to accommodate Isak (who will have had less than a week to train with the team prior to the Burnley game). In that sense, I think that Gakpo is also safe for now, so I wouldn’t worry too much about rushing to transfer him out.
Mr Boom Boom Boom Boom makes his return to the team, as Palace face Sunderland at home in GW4. Mateta scored his first goal of the season against Villa in GW3 prior to the international break and will be looking to build upon that performance going forward. The loss of Sarr to injury is concerning for Mateta owners, as the two play well off each other, and without the creativity of both Sarr and Eze, Mateta may struggle. New signing Pino will likely be given a chance, while Esse and Kamada could also feature to fill the creativity gap.
Sunderland have looked decent so far this season, but have admittedly had a fairly easy run of games to start the campaign. The black cats have faced West Ham, Burnley, and Brentford, three teams tipped to go down, so the fact that they have picked up 6 points should come as no surprise. Expect them to struggle more against Palace…
Finally, we have Joao Pedro. The Chelsea striker is now nailed following Delap’s long-term injury, making him an excellent FPL option going forward. He has started the season in amazing form, scoring 2 goals and producing 2 assists in his first 3 matches of the new campaign. Chelsea look much improved compared to last season, and are being tipped by many as a potential title challenger, considering City’s difficult start and Arsenal’s lack of attacking prowess. The Blues face Brentford this weekend and will be hoping for another victory on the road to continue their unbeaten run!
