FPL GW36 Scout Picks Based on Stats, Analysis, and Matchups

Welcome to our FPL GW36 Scout Picks blog! Only 3 GWs to go – time to roll the dice… With very little time to make up the difference in our mini-leagues and climb up the overall rankings, it’s time to take same risks, captain a differential, take a hit… Let’s finish the season with a bang!

Virgil, Bowen and Wissa were the heros for our FPL Scout Picks team last week, contributing to our solid score of 51 points in FPL GW35. That score takes us to 20.5-14.5 against the official FPL scout for the season.

FPL GW36 Scout Picks – Goalkeeper

FPL GW36 Scout Picks Goalkeeper

Our ‘keeper for the umpteenth time this season is Forest’s Sels (5.2m), who faces Leicester at home in FPL GW36. Forest have the second most clean sheets in the league this season, and have continued to impress defensively. They have conceded the 4th fewest goals, but are comfortably bottom half of the table for expected goals against, highlighting the importance of Sels to their CS record and current points tally.

Sels Forest

The difference between Forest’s expected goals against and goals against is marked, with the Tricky Trees currently -6.75 on their xGA, meaning they have conceded almost 7 goals fewer than they ‘should’ have; a lot of this can be put down to their goalie. Credit should also be given to Forest’s defenders and the way that Murillo and Milenkovic consistently make last ditch tackles and put their bodies on the line to keep their team in the game.

The last time Forest kept a CS was in GW30 against Manchester United, so they’ll be keen to get back to ‘cleansheet-ing ways’ as soon as possible. Their opponent in GW36 is Leicester, a team who have broken multiple records for their lack of goal-scoring this season – the perfect chance to get a CS! Leicester are bottom of the league for xG and second bottom for goals scored, highlighting their attacking difficulties.

FPL GW36 Scout Picks – Defenders

FPL GW36 Scout Picks Defenders

We’re going big on the already-relegated / promoted sides this week, with all of our defenders (and goalkeeper) facing one of them in GW36. Kayode (4.5m), Gvardiol (6.4m) and Milenkovic (5.2m) complete our backline for FPL GW36.

Let’s start with Milenkovic. We thought it important to double up on Forest defenders this week due to their favourable fixture against Leicester. Milenkovic is the most ‘attacking’ of the Forest defenders, and is a real threat from set-pieces, averaging 0.12xG/90 this season. Everything written about Sels applies here: great clean sheet record, excellent fixture etc. there’s not a lot to say! Milenkovic is the 4th highest scoring defender in FPL this season, higher than all of his Nottingham Forest teammates, and with Murillo yellow-flagged, he is perhaps the most obvious and best choice for this weekend.

Forest Defense
Even though the defense numbers of Forest are not great, we are backing the fixture and Nottingham Forest’s push for UCL

Gvardiol comes in this week with Man City in great form and facing one of the worst sides in Premier League history. City are on a 4 game win-streak and a 7 game unbeaten streak in the league, having kept four clean sheets in that time. In only three of those games have the Citizens conceded over 1xG, highlighting their improved defense in recent weeks/months.

Gvardiol City

The Croatian defender has been moved to centre back over this run, in order to make space at left-back for academy prospect O’Reilly. This change has of course affected his attacking output, but has rendered City’s defense far more solid in the process. As both of City’s full-backs are listed as midfielders in FPL, it makes sense to go for Gvardiol / Dias this week, in order to maximise the clean sheet points. Southampton have scored the fewest goals in the league and created the second lowest xG, they are already relegated and have nothing to play for, whereas City are still trying to secure a Champions League spot…

Speaking of teams who have nothing to play for… Brentford’s Kayode makes the team, after an excellent performance in FPL GW35. ‘Nothing to play for’ is perhaps harsh, as Brentford could still make it into some form of European sptot, they’re giving it their best shot anyway, as shown through their impressive victory over Manchester United last weekend. Kayode had an absolute field day down the right hand side against United, and will look to do the same against Ipswich – he should be able to find lots of space as he’ll be up against an out of position Greaves…

Brentford FPL

Kayode played excellently in that game, providing 1 assist and setting up Damsgaard for his shot which was deflected in for an own goal (so basically two assists). Brentford face the other promoted / relegated side in Ipswich this GW, a team who truly have nothing to play for. Ipswich have failed to score in 2 of their last 5 games, and have scored the 3rd fewest goals in the league this season. With Arsenal and Liverpool playing eachother, and Newcastle and Chelsea also facing one another, we think a Brentford defensive asset is the way to go this weekend, and for us Kayode is the best option!

FPL GW36 Scout Picks – Midfielders

FPL GW36 Scout Picks Midfielders

For FPL GW36 we’ve gone for a midfield quintet of Elanga (5.4m), Bowen (7.7m), Eze (6.9m), Mbeumo (8.2m) and De Bruyne (9.5m)…

Bowen and Mbeumo retain their places from last week’s team, after both having managed an attacking return in FPL GW35. Mbeumo picked up one assist in Brentford’s 4-3 win over Manchester United, while Bowen scored West Ham’s only goal in their victory over Spurs. This week it is Bowen who faces Manchester United, while Mbeumo faces Ipswich away from home. Bowen’s underlying data has remained consistently good in recent weeks, despite his position and role changing from week to week. Manchester United are in horrible form, and may well be focused on the Europa league final (should they get there) – they will have very little regard for this game, as it is basically a dead-rubber.

Mbeumo Wissa FPL

Despite his fairly low-key performance against United, Mbeumo retains the captaincy in FPL GW36, as we’re confident he can build on his recent performances and get back to his goal-scoring ways. This season, Brentford’s star man has consistently over performed his underlying data, so his ‘low’ xG of recent weeks is not really a concern – he has the ability to score incredible goals and low-xG chances, do not be put off by his underlying data. Brentford face an already relegated Ipswich, a side who have conceded 2+ goals in all of their last five games, while the Bees themselves are still in the fight for Europe.

Eze comes back into the fray, with Palace facing Spurs in FPL GW36. While Sarr still has better underlying data, Eze’s output can only be ignored for so long – 3 goals in his last 5 games and 5 goal involvements in his last 6 is incredible, especially considering Palace picked up just 1 win in that stretch. As mentioned, Eze’s season wide underlying numbers are inferior to Sarr – 0.39xG/90 for Sarr v 0.32xG/90 for Eze (0.3xA v 0.22xA), but the difference is that Eze, over the course of his career, has consistently over performed his underlying numbers, whereas Sarr has not to the same extent.

Eze FPL

Furthermore, Eze is Palace’s talisman, he is the player that they look to to pull them out of trouble, to score the crucial goal, to play the special pass, and over the course of the season he has truly grown into that role in Olise’s absence. Palace face Spurs, a side who have nothing to play for and are in awful form, having drawn 1-1 with West Ham in FPL GW35 – they are a team to be targetted, and Eze is, at the moment, the most in-form Palace asset.

Behind Chris Wood, Elanga is Forest’s most dangerous, and most clinical, player. While MGW is the most creative, and really the driving force of Forest’s attack, Elanga has the better underlying numbers AND has shown time and time again that he has the ability to finish his chances. He is the second highest scorer, behind Chris Wood, for Nottingham Forest, and has the most assists – more than MGW.

Elanga Forest

Forest face Leicester who are already relegated and have arguably been the worst team in the league since Christmas. Nuno’s side on the other hand are still fighting for a Champions League spot, and will be keen to pick up some points having just been through a tough spell of fixtures. With a great fixture, and in dire need of some points to keep their European dream alive, Elanga completes the Nottingham Forest triple-up.

Finally we have Manchester City’s KDB. 1 goal and three bonus points against Wolves in FPL GW35 underlines his importance to this regenerated and rejuvenated City side. His performance against Palace in GW32 was something special, and since then he has started every single game in the league. His underlying numbers are, as usual, crazy – 0.26xG/90 and 0.50xA/90 is out of this world, especially for a player who many were calling ‘washed’ and ‘over the hill’ earlier this season – he still has so much to give.

KDB City

City face Southampton, who have conceded the most goals and the most xGA in the league this season. In their last 5 games they’ve conceded 11 goals, including 3 against Spurs (who aren’t very good) and 2 against Leicester (who are very bad). KDB is a great option this week, and a very interesting potential captaincy choice…

FPL GW36 Scout Picks – Forwards

FPL GW36 Scout Picks Forwards

Our FPL GW36 Scout Picks team is completed by Wissa (6.7m) and Marmoush (7.6m)…

Wissa completes the Brentford triple up, after having impressed in the last few weeks, scoring in all of his last 4 premier league games. He has dovetailed excellently with Mbeumo all season, and continues to have the best underlying data in the Brentford squad. His 0.61xG/90 is unrivaled in that team, and is exceptional for what is essentially a mid-table premier league side.

Wissa Stats

As mentioned, Brentford face Ipswich, who are already relegated and have nothing to play for. In the reverse fixture the Bees won 4-3 against the Tractor Boys, with Wissa contributing 1 goal and 1 assist, taking home 10 points for his lucky FPL managers, the 18.1% of managers that own him will be hoping for a similar return this weekend!

Marmoush is the final player in our FPL GW36 Scout Picks team, and completes our third and final triple up. Despite blanking for the 3rd GW in a row, we’re backing Marmoush again this weekend. His underlying numbers have remained consistent throughout his drought, and his performances from the first half of the season, and even since his arrival at City, have demonstrated that he is a very very special player. This weekend City face Southampton, offering Marmoush the perfect opportunity to get back on the score sheet!

Marmoush Manchester City

His role has changed in recent weeks, playing much more as a wide forward than as a central striker or attacking midfielder, but, as mentioned, his numbers have remained good. Southampton are pretty hopeless defensively, though it must be pointed out that in the reverse fixture City game away with just a 1-0 win… Their recent performances tell a different story however, and I wouldn’t be surprised if City get back to their ruthless best against the Saints in GW36. Marmoush, similarly to KDB, is a decent captaincy choice, but to be on the safe side we’re sticking with Mbeumo.
