FPL GW35 Scout Picks – Goalkeeper

FPL GW35 Scout Picks Goalkeeper

Flekken (4.4m) is our choice goalkeeper this week, with Brentford facing Manchester United in FPL GW35. Despite just 1 CS in his last 5 games, we’re backing Flekken in GW35 for a number of reasons, namely, Manchester United’s misfortune…

United currently sit in 14th position, just 1 point above Everton in 15th and 3 above West Ham in 17th – they are firmly a bottom half Premier League side. Much like the sides surrounding them in the ‘battle to be the worst side outside of the newly promoted teams’, they have, so far this season, under performed their expected goals and over performed their expected goals against. This will not surprise many though, as their attackers are notoriously hit and miss (mainly miss). United are winless in their last 5 prem games, and will have their sights fixed on their second leg Europe League Semi-Final against Athletic Club, and much less on a fairly meaningless game against Brentford.

Flekken fpl

The Bees on the other hand are fresh off the back of a win against Brighton in GW33, and face Forest away on thursday night. Since January they have beaten a number of teams who play 3-back systems, including, Southampton, Palace and West Ham, which bodes well for their game against United in GW35. United are in poor form, have a number of significant injuries, have nothing to play for, and with this game sandwiched between their two Europa League semi-final legs, they’ll have other things on their mind.

FPL GW35 Scout Picks – Defenders

FPL GW35 Scout Picks Defenders

Our backline consists of O’Brien (4.5m), Virgil (6.7m) and Trippier (5.7m)…

O’Brien has become a permanent fixture of Everton’s back four since Moyes returned to the club earlier this season. His 6’6″ frame has been deployed both at full back and at centre back in recent weeks, and he has impressed in both roles. I singled him out as a potential asset for those on a WC in GW29 and he has done decently well since then, managing 1 goal and 1 clean sheet in that time. Everton have had a pretty tough fixture run recently, facing the likes of Liverpool, Forest and City in a short space of time, so they’ll be hoping to get some points on the board in GW35 when they welcome Ipswich to Goodison.

O'Brien Everton FPL

Ipswich have scored the third fewest goals and produced the third lowest xG total in the league so far this season – they are a poor attacking side, and we should continue to target opposition defenses. O’Brien has the highest xGI/90 of any Everton defender, with his threat primarily coming in the form of set-pieces. Ipswich have conceded 12 goals from set-pieces so far this campaign, the fourth most in the division, so Moyes will no doubt try to exploit this weakness. Fundamentally we back Everton to get a clean sheet, and O’Brien is not only the most nailed, but also has the highest probability of any Everton defender of getting an attacking return.

We head to the other side of Stanley Park now – to Liverpool, namely to Virgil Van Dijk. The newly crowned Premier League Champions will face off against Chelsea in FPL GW35, and Slot will be keen not to let standards slip following the trophy celebrations last weekend. Spirits will be high, but concentration may not be… With Bradley and Trent both fit, it’s a toss up for who will start, so going for either Konate or VVD is a safer pick for now.

VVD FPL

Liverpool are facing Chelsea in FPL GW35, a team who are unbeaten in five, but have been fairly unconvincing in a lot of those games. Against Everton in GW34, they struggled to break the Toffees down, creating just 0.77xG, and having to rely on a couple of superb saves from their ‘keeper to keep them out of trouble. They have been struggling to create chances for a while now, as Palmer’s form has still not improved, and they will definitely struggle against this Liverpool team, who will likely try to starve them of the ball. Moresca loves to keep the ball and pass the opposition to death, something which his side will likely not be allowed to do against the Reds, thus, in light of this, and their recent form in terms of goal creation, we’re backing the Prem Champs to keep another CS.

Finally we have Trippier. Having gone for Livramento in FPL GW34 and being badly hurt by Tripps’ huge points haul, we’re switching allegiances this week. Trippier’s 0.13xA/90 is nothing special, but it is significantly higher than Livramento’s, so perhaps his haul in GW34 should have come as no surprise. Having lost his place in the team earlier this season to Livramento, he looked back to his best in FPL GW34, putting in some trade mark balls for attackers to feed off.

Trippier FPL

It’s important to note that his massive points haul came against Ipswich, and he will not be facing them every week… Instead, the Magpies go up against Brighton in FPL GW35, a side who are still in the hunt for European football. That being said, Newcastle themselves still have a lot to play for, and are in magnificent form, with that loss against Villa their only dropped points in their last 7 games, so we think they’ll come out swinging against the Seagulls!

FPL GW35 Scout Picks – Midfielders

FPL GW35 Scout Picks Midfielders

It’s a midfield quartet for us this weekend, with Salah (13.8m), Bowen (7.6m), Rogers (5.7m) and our captain for FPL GW35 – Bryan Mbeumo (8.1m)…

Salah retains his place in the team but loses the captaincy. He put in a great showing against Spurs in FPL GW34, picking up 1 goal and 1 bonus point. He looked much more like his old self against Spurs last weekend, and will be keen to continue that form against another one of the ‘big six’ in GW35. We may drop him at some point between now and the end of the season, but he showed us enough against Spurs to warrant inclusion in this weeks Scout team.

From the side who faced Tottenham last week to the side who face them this week – Bowen up next! Spurs were pretty abominable against Liverpool in FPL GW34, putting up very little fight against the Reds, and only scoring through a corner early on in the match. They are 16th for a reason.

Bowen West Ham

West Ham, on the other hand, threw away a victory against Bright on in the final few minutes, with the Seagulls coming from 2-1 down to win 2-3 in added time at the end of the game. The Hammers continue to struggle to get to grips with Potters’ management style and tactics, it’s a slow process, but progress is being made. Bowen continues to impress though, having bagged 4 goal involvements in his last 4 Premier League matches (2 goals and 2 assists). His underlying numbers have been fairly consistent in that time too, averaging just over 0.5xGI/90 across his last 5 appearances in the league, despite having faced tough opposition (Liverpool and Bourneouth) in that time. Spurs are in shocking form and will also be focused on their Europa league tie against Bodo/Glimt, so Bowen was a no-brainer for the FPL GW35 Scout Picks team.

In order to get a bit of cover for the Aston Villa attack we’ve gone for Rogers – let me explain. The original Quasi-Essential-Budget-Enabler (QEBE) makes his return to the team, in what was ultimately a toss-up between Murphy and Rogers. Villa and Newcastle are both in the hunt for Champions League football, have no commitments in other competitions and are in great form, so they are both teams to target. We had too many forward options to choose from this week, meaning that a big name striker had to miss out, thus Rogers became the obvious pick in order to cover for a certain Aston Villa striker’s absence…

Rogers Aston Villa

Rogers is by no means just a filler though, and has produced 5 goal involvements in his last 5 premier league games. His 0.41xGI/90 is decent, exceptional when considering his price, and these numbers have actually gone up in recent times, with him averaging 0.62xGI/90 across the last 5 premier league matches. Emery fully trusts him, and he’s the most nailed of any Villa attacking player, making him the ideal candidate for our FPL GW35 Scout Picks team. Fulham are no push overs, but with Villa in the form they’re in, and still in the hunt for Champions league football, we’re backing Emery’s side.

Finally we have our captaincy pick for this weekend’s round of fixtures – Bryan Mbeumo. The Brentford star has been in exceptional form of late, scoring a brace and providing an assist in Brentford’s recent win over Brighton. 0.63xGI/90 for the season is excellent, and, while he continues to over perform his xG significantly, he’s been a great servant to the FPL community this season!

Mbeumo FPL

He’s our captain for a number of reasons, but above all it’s due to the fixture. United are bad, and, as mentioned, will not be focused on this game at all, especially if they need to win the second leg of their Europa League tie next mid-week to progress to the final. He failed to register a goal or assist against United earlier this season, but United are a very different side now compared to then, with a different manager, formation and tactical style. As mentioned, Brentford have done well against back-3 playing sides this season, particularly since the turn of the year, and the Bees will be laser focused on getting back into the European places, as they sit only a few points shy of 8th…

A front three of Isak (9.6m), Wissa (6.6m) and Marmoush (7.6m) completes the team…

As mentioned with Mbeumo, United will be unfocused and are really in a rut, so we’re going for the triple up and have selected Wissa to lead the line for us in the FPL GW35 Scout Picks team. Everything mentioned in the Flekken and Mbeumo sections applies here, though it is also worth noting that Wissa actually has better underlying numbers than Mbeumo…

Isak Newcastle

Isak and Marmoush are our final two picks for this week, with Watkins just missing out. Let me explain. Despite his patchy form in recent weeks, Isak’s numbers are still sky high, and he remains the best Newcastle asset by a mile. Compared to Murphy and Barnes, he is clear. We felt it necessary to include at least one of each Newcastle and Villa attackers, as both teams are fighting for champions league football and are in great form with decent fixtures this weekend. As Rogers is a viable alternative to Watkins in terms of underlying numbers and output, we felt that the best combination was Rogers + Isak rather than Watkins + Murphy/Barnes – but both combos are viable options.

Isak is now second for goals scored in the league, only behind Salah, and has picked up from his goal drought in recent weeks, scoring against Ipswich and against Palace in Newcastle’s last 3 fixtures. His underlying numbers remain excellent, averaging just under 1xGI/90, with 0.74 of that being xG.

Marmoush FPL

Marmoush’s expected data is similarly excpetional. Despite being moved out to a wider position on the left of City’s attack, he continues to average over 0.7xG/90 in the last 5 matches, and 0.14xA/90. Across the season he’s second only to Haaland for xG/90 in the city squad (500+ minutes). Wolves will not be an easy fixture, but City have been getting better in recent weeks, and looked back to their best against Palace and Forest in the last month or so. It was a tight call between the three of them (Watkins, Isak and Marmoush), but we’re confident in our combination.
