FPL Gameweek 23 Transfer Tips: Two Players to Buy, Hold & Sell

Gameweek 22 delivered an avalanche of unexpected results, leaving FPL managers scrambling to make sense of the chaos. Newcastle’s usually solid defense was torn apart by a relentless Bournemouth side, conceding four goals in a shocking defeat. Justin Kluivert stole the show with a scintillating hattrick, his second of the season, but this time without the aid of penalties, proving his clinical prowess. Meanwhile, Manchester United’s struggles under Amorim deepened as they succumbed to a third consecutive home defeat to Brighton, mirroring the ghosts of seasons past. The Seagulls’ dominance at Old Trafford is quickly becoming a tradition, much to the dismay of Red Devils fans.

Adding to the drama, Liverpool pulled off a miraculous victory in stoppage time thanks to an unlikely hero—Darwin Núñez. His two late goals turned despair into jubilation at Anfield, reigniting Liverpool’s charge up the table. This week was a stark reminder of football’s unpredictability, with even the most astute FPL managers caught off guard. The big question now is how to adapt and capitalize on the fallout from these surprises as we head into the next round of fixtures.

So, let’s start with our BUY-HOLD-SELL article for this GW, sponsored by …. Well, nobody. We are poor, but you can help here if you want 😊

FPL Gameweek 23 Transfer Tips: Two Players to BUY

PS – I am not mentioning Salah, as he is non-negotiable at this point. I assume he is already in your team.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.3m) – DEF, Liverpool – 29.5% TSB

FPL Gameweek 23 Transfer Tips: Two Players to BUY - Trent Alexander Arnold

If you’re looking for a defensive asset with immense potential for points at both ends of the pitch, Trent Alexander-Arnold is the standout pick for FPL Gameweek 23. Liverpool faces Ipswich, a team reeling from a humiliating 0-6 home defeat in their last outing. Ipswich ranks a dismal 20th for expected goals (xG) and 19th for expected goals conceded (xGC), highlighting their struggles in both attack and defense. In contrast, Liverpool is flying high, topping the league for both xG and xGC, which sets the stage for a dominant performance.

Trent’s individual stats further solidify his case as an elite option. Among defenders, he leads the pack in key attacking metrics: 1st for expected goal involvement (xGI), key passes, big chances created, expected assists (xA), expected points (xPts), and baseline bonus points system (BPS). He’s also ranked 2nd for total FPL points and assists, making him one of the most well-rounded assets available. With Ipswich’s vulnerabilities and Liverpool’s form, Trent offers a high probability of clean sheet points while being a constant creative threat, making him a prime candidate for double-digit returns this week.

Morgan Rogers (£5.5m) – MID, Aston Villa – 22.9 % TSB

FPL Gameweek 23 Transfer Tips: Two Players to BUY - Morgan Rogers

With Aston Villa embarking on a dream run of fixtures starting in Gameweek 23, now is the perfect time to invest in their in-form midfielder, Rogers. All three of Villa’s upcoming opponents rank in the bottom five for goals conceded, setting the stage for a goal-fest. Rogers has proven his ability to exploit these matchups, amassing an impressive 19 points in the reverse fixtures against these very teams.

Rogers represents incredible value for FPL managers looking to bolster their midfield without breaking the bank. Amongst midfielders priced at £5.5m or lower, Rogers is ranked:

  • 1st for FPL points
  • 1st for Bonus Points
  • 1st for Goals
  • 1st for Goal Involvements
  • 2nd for xGI
  • 2nd for Shots
  • 2nd for xPts
  • 3rd for Assists

With Villa’s form and favorable schedule, Rogers is not only a great enabler but also a genuine threat to deliver consistent returns. Don’t miss the opportunity to grab him and gain an edge in your mini leagues.

FPL GW23 Transfer Tips: Two Players to HOLD

Cole Palmer (£11.3m) – MID, Chelsea – 66.6% TSB

FPL Gameweek 23 Transfer Tips: Two Players to HOLD - Cole Palmer

Cole Palmer has emerged as the most transferred-out midfielder this week following his blank against Wolves. However, it appears many FPL managers may be acting prematurely. This quiet performance comes on the heels of an impressive 20-point haul across his previous two matches.

When it comes to midfielders, Palmer boasts remarkable rankings:

  • 2nd for Shots on Target
  • 2nd for Big Chances
  • 2nd for xG
  • 2nd for Goals Scored
  • 2nd for xGI
  • 2nd for Goal Involvements
  • 2nd for BPS
  • 2nd for Bonus Points
  • 2nd for xPts
  • 2nd for FPL Points
  • 1st for Key Passes
  • 1st for Big Chances Created
  • 1st for xA

Additionally, his upcoming fixtures are far from daunting.

Notably, in the reverse fixtures against the three sides classified as tougher opponents, Palmer delivered an incredible 41 points.

Given these statistics and his proven potential, Palmer remains a compelling asset and should be considered a strong hold.

Anthony Gordon (£7.7m) – MID, Newcastle – 25.9%

FPL Gameweek 23 Transfer Tips: Two Players to HOLD - Anthony Gordon

Over 81,000 FPL managers have hit the panic button and sold Anthony Gordon ahead of his trip to Southampton. Perhaps his blank against Bournemouth left them as frustrated as a striker who just hit the post in the 90th minute. But let’s not forget, that blank was only Gordon’s second in his last 10 games—hardly reason to abandon ship.

Now, let’s talk about Southampton’s defence—or rather, the lack of it. The Saints are struggling so much to adjust to Premier League life, they might as well rename themselves “The Sieve FC.” Over the same period, they’ve claimed the wooden spoon in just about every defensive metric:

  • 20th for shots conceded
  • 20th for shots in the box conceded
  • 20th for shots on target conceded
  • 20th for big chances conceded
  • 20th for NPxGC
  • 20th for xGC
  • 20th for xCS
  • 20th for goals conceded

It’s like they’re hosting a defensive disaster class every week.

Meanwhile, Gordon’s in the form of his life, and this match-up looks like a dream for him. So, before you pull the trigger on transferring him out, ask yourself: why bench a chef when the opposition’s kitchen is already on fire? Hold onto the Newcastle star—he might just cook up a feast at St. Mary’s.

FPL GW23 Transfer Tips: Two Players to SELL

Nicolas Jackson (£7.9m) – FWD, Chelsea – 15.4% TSB

FPL Gameweek 23 Transfer Tips: Two Players to SELL - Nicolas Jackson

Jackson is an obvious SELL this week, as his FPL prospects continue to fade into obscurity. Since Gameweek 14, his returns have been underwhelming at best:

  • 1 goal
  • 1 assist
  • 24 points

To put it into perspective, over 25 forwards have outperformed him during this period.

What makes it even more exasperating is Chelsea’s fixture list in that time. They faced teams like Southampton, Tottenham, Brentford, Everton, Fulham, Ipswich, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, and Wolves—defences that looked like easy pickings on paper. Yet, Jackson still failed to deliver consistently.

And if that wasn’t enough to frustrate managers, his price fluctuations have been just as unkind – rising by £0.2m before crashing by £0.4m, leaving a net loss of £0.2m. Add to that the countless managers who’ve been left pulling their hair out and raising their blood pressure.

With Manchester City next on the schedule and more appealing forward options begging for your attention, it’s time to cut your losses. Say goodbye to Jackson and reclaim your points—and your peace of mind!

Dominic Solanke (£7.5m) – FWD, Spurs – 7.0% TSB

FPL Gameweek 23 Transfer Tips: Two Players to SELL - Domnic Solanke

Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke is set for a six-week spell on the sidelines with a knee injury, leaving FPL managers scrambling faster than defenders trying to keep up with him. Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou confirmed after their thrilling 3-2 Europa League win over Hoffenheim that Solanke is expected to return in early March. This timeline means he’ll miss some big games, including the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool and several crucial Premier League fixtures.

“With Dom, the word is around six weeks,” said Postecoglou. “No surgery needed, but we’ll see—might be quicker, might not.” Classic optimistic Ange.

For FPL managers, though, six weeks feels like an eternity—especially when you’re holding an injured forward in a game built on points, not patience. Unsurprisingly, Solanke has become the second most transferred-out forward this gameweek, and honestly, it’s hard to argue. Time to cut your losses and let him recover in peace. After all, you can’t score points from the physio table!
