Welcome to our FPL GW19 Scout Picks blog! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas period and, more importantly, a successful GW18. Our Scout Picks Team picked up a huge 65 points last GW, meanwhile the official FPL Scout only managed 59 – great success! Our victory in GW18 makes it 12 – 6 to us, as we extend our win streak to three consecutive gameweeks.

FPL GW19 Scout Picks
FPL GW19 Scout Picks – Goalkeeper
An early season favorite returns to the team – Forest’s Sels (4.7m) is our ‘keeper for FPL GW19. Sels is the 2nd highest-scoring goalie in the game as of GW18, having scored a total of 79 points across the first 18 games of the season, just 3 behind Pickford. Forest’s number 1 has been in particularly fine form as of late, keeping clean sheets in back-to-back matches against Brentford in GW17 and Spurs in GW18 – the first time he has kept consecutive clean sheets all season.
Forest have won all of their last 4 games in the league, and 5 of their last 6. Nuno’s side have also conceded less than 1xG in 4 of their last 6 matches, which is astonishing considering they’ve faced Villa, Spurs, United, and City in that period. The Tricky Trees have been solid at the back all season, and Sels has been a mainstay in their back line since GW1.
Forest’s opponents this week also boast an excellent defensive record in the league, with a trip to Everton on the card for Nuno’s men in GW19. Despite their recent uptick in form, and exceptional results against the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and City, the Toffees are still struggling to score goals – with this great run of results mainly down to their ability to not concede, rather than a purple patch of goal scoring. Dyche’s side have the lowest xG in the league and have produced more than 1xG in just 8 of the 17 matches they have played so far this season. Even when they have created enough to win matches, their forwards have been letting them down, with Everton one of the 11 sides in the league that are underperforming their xG by 3 or more goals.

FPL GW19 Scout Picks – Defenders
We had to cut corners in order to try and fit a certain Norwegian striker into our team this week, meaning that both our defense and midfield have suffered leading us to go for some more differential options. Munoz (4.7m), Timber (5.7m), and Gomez (4.9m) make up our back 3 for GW19.
I wrote many posts and threads at the start of the season about Munoz, tipping him to be the next Doherty, and while he and Palace struggled at the beginning of the season, I feel as though my forecast has now come to fruition – in the last 6GWs, Munoz is 2nd for xG and big chances and 1st for shots on target among defenders. During this period, he has scored twice and kept 2 clean sheets, bringing home a total of 31 points to those lucky enough to own him, or just over 6 points per game (he didn’t play against Arsenal in GW17.)
Any defender averaging anywhere near 0.3xGI/90 should be on our radars. Munoz’ 0.32xGI/90, 0.22 of which is xG, has been on many managers radars for a number of weeks now – so why are we selecting him this week? Palace face Southampton at home in GW19, providing Munoz the perfect opportunity for not only some potential attacking returns, but also some more clean sheet points. The Saints are winless since the start of November, and their new manager bounce (which included a 2-1 loss to Liverpool in the cup and a draw against Fulham in the league) seems almost certainly to have ended with their 0-1 loss to 10 man West Ham in GW18…
Next up is everybody’s second favourite Arsenal defender – Timber! Due to financial restrictions, we’ve had to downgrade from Gabriel to Timber this week, and with Arsenal not in action again until New Year’s Day, we’re confident that Timber will have enough rest to start again for the Gunners in what will be his eleventh consecutive start in the league!
As I’ve written time and time again, Arsenal are the best defense in the league, despite the numbers suggesting that Liverpool deserve that title, and it is essential to have at least one Arsenal defensive asset in our teams every single week. The double-up has served us well in recent weeks, but due to the aforementioned financial restraints, we’ve had to reduce it to just Timber for GW19.
As with our Arsenal defensive asset, we’ve had to go for the cheaper Liverpool option too, with Trent dropping out of the team in place of Joe Gomez for the AllAbout FPL GW19 Scout Picks team. Liverpool’s current longest-serving player makes his first appearance for the AAFPL scout selection team this season as he is the cheapest Liverpool defensive option who is most likely to start this weekend.
But why was it essential to have a Liverpool defensive asset this week outside of their exceptional defensive record? Due to their favorable fixture against West Ham. While the Reds’ game is away at the London Stadium, West Ham are still getting to grips with their new style under their new manager, and barely scraped past Southampton in GW18 – a matchup with league leaders Liverpool may be a bridge too far…

FPL GW19 Scout Picks – Midfielders
Premiums Salah (13.5m) and Palmer (11.3m) retain their places in the team, with Enzo (5.1m) and Rogers (5.4m) returning and Sarr (5.8m) making his debut!
Salah and Palmer speak for themselves, with both players enjoying hugely successful first halves of the season – Salah scoring 16 and assisting 11, and Palmer scoring 12 and assisting 7. Liverpool, as mentioned, face West Ham in GW19, a side which he loves to play – with the Egyptian involved in 15 goals in 16 appearances against the Hammers thus far in his career.
Liverpool’s main man seems to be breaking a new record every week, and even in spite of his relatively quiet, by his standards, game against Leicester in GW18, he still managed to come away with a goal and 2 bonus points. While rotation is a worry due to the quick turnaround between this match and GW18, we still expect Salah to start, so he retains a place, and the captaincy, for our team in GW19.
Palmer (11.3m) on the other hand faces a trip to Portman Road in GW19, and having suffered a late loss to Fulham in GW18, he and his teammates will be eager to put in a good performance and take home all 3 points. Despite Chelsea’s capitulation, Palmer still managed to bag a massive 10 points in GW18, showing just how crucial an FPL asset he is! He’s an essential FPL asset and a great captaincy option this weekend.
He is joined in the midfield by his Chelsea teammate Enzo Fernandez (5.1m), who, in spite of a difficult start to the season, has emerged as an interesting budget enabler. Between GW11 and GW16 the Chelsea midfielder managed 7 attacking returns, which is massive considering his price. While his attacking numbers have remained steady during and since that purple patch, the attacking returns have dried up slightly, with him not recording one in the last 2 GWs. The last 2 GWs have been against two very decent defensive teams in Fulham and Everton however, and he may have much more joy against Ipswich this weekend, so we’re backing him and Palmer to get the job done in GW19!
We’re going all in on Palace this GW, with Sarr (5.8m) joining Munoz in the team to make it a Palace double up in GW19. Admittedly, Sarr’s form has been patchy this season, with him recording 2 double digit hauls, but outside of those, just 2 other attacking returns. However, his underlying numbers are very very interesting…
Sarr is averaging 0.4xG/90 and 0.31xA/90, which makes him the most creative and second most threatening (behind Mateta 0.41xG/90) player in Palace’s squad. His goals and assists per 90 are below his expected numbers, highlighting not only his individual underperformance but Palace’s failings more generally. As mentioned in the defenders section, Palace face Southampton in GW19, so at least one Palace attacker was a must for the Scout Picks team this week, considering the Saint’s dire defensive record.
His form is decent, (3 attacking returns in the last 3 matches), his underlying numbers are great, the fixture is great and his price is very appealing – he’s a great option for GW19 and Fantasy Football Hubs predicted points tool expects him to be the third highest scoring midfield in GW19, behind only Salah and Palmer!
Finally, we have Rogers (5.4m) – the original QEBE (Quasi-essential-budget-enabler). Rogers is averaging a steady 0.5xGI/90 and has shown us that he is an integral part of Emery’s team. Villa were unlucky to go down to 10 against Newcastle, and their 3-0 can be considered an outlier in their recent form which includes wins over City, Southampton, and Brentford.
Villa face Brighton in GW19, a side who really struggled to break down Brentford in GW18 and were fairly open at the back on occasion, particularly in the second half. We could definitely see Watkins, Rogers, and the rest of the Villa attack finding pockets of space on the counterattack against Brighton in GW19. The Seagulls are winless in 6 and have conceded 10 goals in that time, conceding 3 against Palace and 2 against relegation contenders Leicester – they’re very leaky; up against the likes of Rogers, I worry for them!

FPL GW19 Scout Picks – Forwards
Haaland (14.8m) makes his long awaited return to the team, with Pep’s struggling Manchester City side facing Leicester away in GW19. This week seems like the perfect opportunity to get ahead of the curve and get Haaland back in, as Leicester were poor against Liverpool in large spells, and will likely concede against City. While both City as a whole and Haaland himself have been struggling to find form in recent weeks, Leicester are one of the weakest teams in the league, and it would be a surprise to see them come away with nothing from the King Power.
Haaland’s season wide numbers are still a joke, with the striker averaging 0.86xG/90, down from 1.1 the season before and 1.05 the season before that. The Norweigan accumulated his highest xG in recent weeks against Everton in GW18 (0.83) which could be a sign that the Citizens are finally on the up again! He’s very expensive, and his inclusion means that the rest of our team suffers, but we felt it necessary to include him given the fixture and the possibility of a haul! PS. The last time we included Haaland in our team he scored so…
Our final player is Newcastle’s Isak (9.1m), who retains his place in the team for the fourth week in a row! Isak scored for the fifth game in a row in GW18, making it 9 goal involvements in the last 5 GWs for the Newcastle striker. Admittedly his form is the main reason for his inclusion, but the fixture isn’t too bad either, with the Magpies facing Manchester United away from home in GW19, and the Red Devils in a truly bad moment…
United have lost 4 of their last 5 in the league, with their only victory in those five coming against Manchester City. What’s worse is that they’ve conceded on average 2 goals a game in that period. They are very low on confidence, whereas Newcastle are as high as they’ve been all season, coming off the back of emphatic wins over Villa, Ipswich and Leicester.
