Welcome to our FPL GW14 Scout Picks blog! Despite getting a massive 83 points in GW13, we fell short of the Official FPL Scout team, which somehow managed to accrue 98 points! Nonetheless we’re still 8-5 up against them, and hopeful that we’ve got the best squad to maximise the mid-week fixtures in GW14. It’s a tight turnaround, with the deadline coming on Tuesday evening, so don’t forget to change your team…

FPL GW14 Scout Picks – Goalkeeper
3rd place Chelsea feature heavily in this weeks team due in large part to their attractive fixture against Southampton in GW14. Sanchez (4.7m) is the third highest scoring GK in the game, behind only Onana and Sels – if you’d told me that was the top 3 scoring ‘keepers at the start of the season I wouldn’t have believed you! The Spaniard put in a solid performance against Villa at the weekend, keeping a CS, making 3 saves (1.15xGC) and bagging 7 FPL points.
Southampton are 16th in the league for xG (16.65), but more worryingly have scored the joint fewest goals (10). The gap between their xG and goals scored is the widest in the league (6.65), showing just how poor their finishing has been. Onuoachu looked like he could make a difference up-front for the Saints in GW12 against Liverpool, but came off with an injury after 50 minutes – it’s currently unclear whether he will be available to play against Chelsea.
Admittedly, a lot of Sanchez’ points came at the beginning of the season, with back-to-back double digit hauls in GW4 and GW5. That being said, Chelsea’s defensive numbers have been fairly solid all season, and it’s unlikely that Southampton will cause them too many problems. There aren’t too many great defensive/GK options to pick from this week, so we’ve gone for the safest choice based on fixture, form and the underlying data – all of which points to Sanchez!

FPL GW14 Scout Picks – Defenders
Trent and Saliba? Is it GW4? There was a period at the start of the season where Gabriel/Saliba + Trent would be lock-ins for the AAFPL Scout Picks Team every single week, so this week feels very much like a throw-back! As mentioned, Trent (6.9m), Saliba (6.0m) and Ipswich’s Leif Davis (4.5m) make up our back-line for GW14, that is very reminiscent of many early FPL24/25 pre-season drafts!
Trent returned from injury in GW13, and put in a great performance against City, helping the Reds to a 2-0 victory over the reigning champions. TAA played a marvelous pass to Salah in the build-up for Liverpool’s first goal, and went on to hit the post later on in the match from a shot outside the box. He is directly involved in everything Liverpool do: defense, build-up, goal creation, etc., and is therefore not only a great pick due to the possibility of attacking returns and clean sheets, but also because he’s a bonus points magnet!
While Man City was by no means a walk in the park, Newcastle Away is a completely different kettle of fish. Liverpool still have some of the best defensive and attacking numbers in the league (underlying and real) – we’ve picked TAA as he has the ability to bag a goal/assist/CS every time he steps out onto the field, regardless of the fixture. The scouser currently only has 1 assist and 0 goals in the league, but those numbers do not tell the whole story…
Trent Attacking Numbers this Season:
- 3.53xA
- 0.33xA/90
- 2.06 Key Passes/90
- 1.22 Shots/90
- 0.75 Bonus Points/90
If Gabriel hadn’t gone off with an injury at half time against West Ham in GW13, he would most certainly be our pick for GW14, but, because of the circumstances (very little time between GW13 and GW14), we’ve gone with Saliba to be on the safe side. Saliba is far less of a goal threat than Gabriel (0.0xG/90 v 0.25xG/90), but in the absence of the Brazilian, Saliba is the best pick as he’s the most nailed.
Arsenal have seemingly turned their poor form around, a change which coincided with the return of Martin Odegaard, coincidence? I think not! The midfield maestro gives them so much control in the centre of the park, which not only helps them create chances, but also reduces the risk of conceding. The Gunners are by no means as solid as they were last season, and Saliba’s price-tag of 6.0m does make him a player to justify buying, especially with his limited attacking threat, but, due to the quick turnaround between the mid-week and weekend games, minutes security is a priority.
Finally, perhaps our most differential pick this week, Leif Davis. Ipswich have a decent fixture run in the short term, and they’ll be hopeful of picking up some more points and put some distance between themselves and the other teams in the relegation battle. The Tractor-Boys are likely to concede goals, it’s an unfortunate fact that we must acknowledge, even against goal-shy Palace, but we picking Davis not for his team’s defensive solidity, but for his own attacking capabilities!
Davis is producing an immense 0.31xA/90, only a bit less than TAA (0.33xA/90). Considering his price, that is an exceptional statistic. Like Trent, Davis is under-performing his xA, which is likely through no fault of his own, having created just over 4xA over the course of the season, and so far returned just 2 assists in the league.
Palace, Ipswich’s opponent in GW14, concede most of the chances down the left and centrally, ideal for Davis owners, as the flying fullback tends to operate high and wide on the left-hand side, swinging balls into the box for his teammates. According the Fanatasypedia, Davis is Ipswich’s chief chance creator, and with a great match-up positionally against a struggling Palace side, the Englishman is a great pick for FPL GW14.

FPL GW14 Scout Picks – Midfielders
A trio of premiums and a forgotten FPL fan favourite! Salah (13.2m,), Saka (10.3m), Palmer (11.0m) and Bowen (7.4m) make up our midfield quartet for FPL GW14.
Off the back of a MOTM worth performance against Pep’s Manchester City in GW13, Salah was always going to be a lock for our AAFPL GW14 Scout picks team. He’s both and FPL and Premier League all time great, and his inclusion in our team this week needs very little explanation. He is not our captain, purely down to the fact that Palmer has a better fixture!
As mentioned, Cole Palmer is our captain this week, due to his excellent performance in GW13, and his fixture being against a promoted side in GW14. Both his numbers and performances in recent weeks have cemented him as one of the best players in the world, so, with a game against floundering Southampton in GW14, he was a no-brainer, not only for the team, but also for captaincy.
The three promoted sides make up the bottom 3 for expected goals against, so it’s clear to see why we target them from an attacking POV. Southampton in particular give away chances for fun, specifically through their risky build-up. Without first choice ‘keeper Ramsdale, Russel Martin has been forced to pick between Lumley and McCarthey, and the rotation between the two of them over the past 2 GWs will not help their build-up nor their defensive stability. Palmer did not get an attacking return against Leicester, but we’re hopeful that GW14 against Southampton will be a different story…
Another player who hauled in GW13 is Arsenal’s starboy Saka, who managed a huge 18 points against WestHam. With Odegaard back in the team, Arsenal’s chance creation has reached another level, since his return to the team, the Gunners have produced 7.62xG across 3 premier league games, the most of any team during that period. Saka similarly has benefited individually from this return, averaging 0.5xG/90 and 0.7xA/90 and producing 2 goals and 3 assists since the Chelsea game (Odegaard’s return).
His quality is undeniable, but he’s been hamstrung by Odegaard’s absence and a crisis in confidence in recent weeks; with both issues resolved, Saka looks like an essential FPL asset once again. Odegaard himself should be considered by managers who can’t quite afford the English Winger, but for GW14 Saka is our first choice!
To complete our midfield we have an AAFPL Scout picks team 24/25 debutant in Jarrod Bowen! 3 goals and 4 assists is by no means a poor return for an FPL asset, especially when considering he’s been playing in one of, if not the, most dysfunctional teams in the league. Numerous times this season I’ve heard West Ham described as poorly coached, so it’s a miracle that Bowen has been able to produce 7 goal contributions in 13GWs.
His 59 points puts him behind only Luis Diaz and Maddison in his price bracket of 7.5m, and 10th overall in the list of highest scoring midfielders. His upcoming fixture list is very appealing, facing Leicester this week followed by some mid-table teams then Southampton in GW18. Most of the Hammers’ chance creation comes down his side, which is precisely the side of the pitch that Leicester concede the majority of their chances (which is why so many managers captained Mbeumo last week)! He’s such a high ceiling pick this week, with an ‘easy’ fixture, good match-up, and great numbers – what’s not to love!

FPL GW14 Scout Picks – Forwards
What’s that I hear you say? Our Scout Picks forward line is exactly the same as our GW14 Wildcard draft? It’s almost like this was our plan all along! (it was a coincidence)… Our forward line this week is made up of Wolve’s star-man Cunha (7.1m), Brighton’s brilliant Pedro (5.8m) and Chelsea’s Number 9 Jackson (8.1m).
Jackson has been magnificent for Chelsea in recent weeks, proving time and time again why he is being consistently chosen ahead of teammate Nkunku. His 0.63xG is the highest in the Chelsea squad, which should come as no surprise to those who have been watching Chelsea’s games recently. His 8 goals and 3 assists this season is bettered only by Palmer (8G,3A) in the team, which is no slight on him considering the quality Palmer possesses!
As mentioned with Palmer and Sanchez, a Chelsea triple-up was always going to be a possibility this week, thanks to Southampton leaking goals left right and centre. Jackson is the 2nd best Chelsea FPL pick (behind Palmer), and is the best forward pick for FPL GW14, he’s a must have!
Cunha retains his place in the team despite disappointing us in GW13, delivering just 2 points. The Brazilian has been running hot on his xG, over performing by over 3 goals so far this season, so a blank in GW13 is not the most surprising thing. His xG of 0.28 is not really that impressive, but when you watch him, you can see why so many managers pick him in FPL! He has the ability to magic something up for his team, score a screamer or play a crazy pass, stuff that the stats just don’t show. He’s Wolves’ talisman, he’s in-form, and has a very attractive fixture against Everton, he’s a great pick for GW14 and beyond.
Finally we have Brighton’s Joao Pedro. 4 goals and 2 assists in around 450 minutes translates to 1.2 goal involvements per 90, an exceptional rate considering his price! Similarly to Cunha, Brighton’s Brazilian has the ability to do something special every time he steps out onto the pitch, the difference is – Pedro plays for a far better team!
Brighton have been on fire this season, having scored the 6th most goals in the league this season – joint with Manchester City! Fulham concede the most chances centrally, perhaps due to their fairly new CB partnership, which is good news for Pedro owners. While we are huge admirers of Fulham’s defensive abilities, Brighton will likely be too much for them, and we’re banking on Pedro to be the difference maker!
