Top FPL Gameweek 6 Captain Picks Based on Analysis & Metrics

Welcome to the GW6 captaincy metrics blog. Salah who topped our captaincy metrics last week picked up an assist but did not haul. Captaincy this week is interesting with a couple of good options to consider. The Top FPL Gameweek 6 Captain picks include Haaland, Salah, Watkins, Saka & Luis Diaz. Let’s see who tops the captaincy metrics this week.

Will it be Haaland or Salah or someone else?

This season the metrics has a 5/5 return record. Last season the metrics finished with 560 points(26/38 returns). The metrics had a 31/37 “returns record” in the 22/23 season and a 30/38 “returns record” in the 21/22 season. Do follow the man behind the metrics @AK_FPL1(Do follow him on Twitter)

Total metrics points: 10 + 34 + 34 + 26 + 12 = 116 pts

Note: “Returns” ~ player topping the metrics getting points returns and not necessarily the highest scoring option of the week.

Underlying Numbers of the FPL Gameweek 6 Captain picks

For the first time in a while, we have got five players who have all been in form over the last few games. Haaland & Saka haven’t blanked so far this season, Salah has blanked only once, Diaz is in the form of his life & Ollie is back scoring for fun.

Haaland is running away with the lead four weeks into the season with an xG of 5.81 & 10 big chances in the opening five games. His 24 shots inside the box is also the highest amongst all players.

Watkins is 2nd with an xG of 3.10, 10 big chances & 13 shots in the box, he’s also joint highest amongst all players for big chances which is brilliant considering he was off the pace in the first two games.

Salah who was unlucky not to return big in GW5 is third in the table with an xG of 2.57, the Liverpool attacker has had 5 big chances and 16 shots in the box. He’s also created 12 chances which is the joint highest amongst all players.

Fellow Liverpool attacker Luis Diaz is a close behind in the fourth spot with an xG of 2.50 and has had 7 big chances which is two more than Salah. He’s also created 8 chances & registered 11 shots inside the box.

Bukayo Saka is only 5th with an xG of 1.45 with 10 shots inside the box & three big chances. He’s however joint top amongst all players for chances created(12). It’s also worth noting that he was subbed off at Half time vs Man City after Arsenal were down to 10 players following Trossard’s red card.

Underlying Numbers of the Candidate’s Teams

Underlying Numbers of the Candidate's Teams

Man City’s numbers are simply extraordinary with a whopping xG of 11.46 in their opening five games.

Liverpool are 2nd with an xG of 10.10. however, they edge out Man City for shots inside the box(63) & big chances(21)

Aston Villa have made a strong start to the season and are 4th with an xG of 8.70, 44 shots inside the box & 21 big chances, they have had 3 more big chances than Man City and level with Liverpool for big chances. Ollie Watkins has had nearly half of those big chances!

Arsenal are last with an xG of 5.66 in the opening five games with only 14 big chances & 38 shots inside the box. The Gunner’s numbers are understandably low but that’s mainly due to the tough run of games for them so far. They should catch up with the stats leaders in the coming games.
