Having a poor start in Matchday 1 can be very demoralizing for Euro fantasy managers. However, as the historic Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu once said, ‘In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity.’
Taking the bold step to play your wildcard chip could be the right choice to stay ahead of your mini-league rivals. In this article, I will provide insights on my top five picks to watch out for, as well as my potential draft team for Matchday 2.
But first, what lessons have we learnt from the first set of fixtures?

Euro Fantasy: Matchday 1 Lessons
- The Host Nation Is Not To Be Underrated – A stunning 5-1 victory against Scotland became Germany’s highest-scoring game in the UEFA Euro. Heavily backed by home support, we can expect their heavy artillery to go all out in Group A.
- Don’t Expect a Lot of Clean Sheets – Based on projections, Italy, England, and Germany were the top nations with close to or over a 50% chance of keeping clean sheets. However, only England fulfilled that goal
- Recoveries Are Important – Alessandro Bastoni, N’Golo Kanté, Amadou Onana, and Radu Drăgușin are among a few outstanding players who secured extra points thanks to their excellent ball recoveries. Managers should not downplay the importance of recoveries as it stands as a key factor for excelling in your mini-leagues.
Top Five Players To Target For Your Euro Fantasy MD2 Wildcard
Cody Gakpo (€7.5m) – Netherlands
5 shots, 3 chances created, scoring a goal in this first Euro start, and an expected goal involvement of 0.62 xGI. The Dutch forward was outstanding in the opening game against Poland, leading a comeback that helped the Netherlands win and secure three points in Group D. Cody Gakpo, who will face France on Matchday 2, appears to be an attractive selection for your wildcard team.

Lamine Yamal (€6.5m) – Spain
Now the youngest player to ever record an assist at the Euros, Lamine Yamal, created three chances and completed 3/4 successful dribbles. The 16-year-old really brought his all in his first major international tournament and troubled the Croatian defense in Matchday 1. With the high prospect of goals being scored by Spain, you can expect Yamal to do more damage when taking on Italy in Matchday 2.

Jude Bellingham (€9.5m) – England
Stepping on stage to assist England defeat Serbia 1-0. Jude Bellingham had a superb all-around game as he was incredible in the attack and contributing defensively for the three lions, reminding fantasy managers why he is Real Madrid’s recent Champions League winner this season. It will be difficult to dispute the youngster’s abilities as England face Denmark on Matchday 2.

Jamal Musiala (€8.5m) – Germany
Germany’s very own Jamal Musiala makes the list of promising young talents. In the opening game of UEFA Euro 2024, Musiala completed 5 take-ons, excelled in ball recoveries, and boasted 100% tackles won and passing accuracy. With Germany set to face Hungary, who made many individual errors in Matchday 1 against Switzerland, Musiala is an enticing option to have in your wildcard team.

Christian Eriksen (€7m) – Denmark
5 shots taken, 7 chances created and producing an expected goal involvement of 1.53 against Slovenia in Matchday 1. Denmark’s midfield maestro controlled every blade of grass and was a phenomenon for the Danes scoring his 42nd goal in 131 international caps. If you’re looking for a solid differential to target against Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions, Eriksen might be worth considering for Matchday 2.
Euro Fantasy MD2 Wildcard Draft Template
Decided to craft a little draft to guide managers on which players could perform well based on recent form and favourable fixtures in Matchday 2.
Notes:
- Croatia needs a big win against Albania if they want to qualify before facing Italy in Matchday 3. Going double-up on Croatia could give managers that cutting-edge in their mini-leagues, I love the prospect of an attacking Josko Gvardiol.
- Spain have been underrated recently, any of their attackers could harm Italy and I predict at least two goals from La Roja.
- Switzerland’s Manuel Akanji completed 11 ball recoveries in Matchday 1 and could be crucial for the clash against Scotland
- After a stunning defeat to Slovakia, Belgium have all to play for to secure their first win in Group E.
- Despite their bolster attack, England are more defensively inclined in big tournament. Jordan Pickford and any of John Stones or Trent Alexander-Arnold would work.
Wishing you all best of luck in your selection. Cheers.
