Wilson vs Isak Comparison Ahead of FPL DGW36

With Newcastle facing Leeds and Brighton in a double gameweek, their assets have been a popular point of discussion in the FPL community. Wilson (£7.1m) and Isak (£7m) are both in great form, with Wilson scoring 5 goals and getting 1 assist in the last six matches, and Isak scoring 3 and also getting 1 assist. When we consider both players, is it worth transferring in both this week, or does one stand out as the ideal pick?

This article will look at individual stats, as well as minutes projections, and analyse how well Newcastle have been performing this season.

Wilson vs Isak: The Statistics

  • Wilson has played 1634 minutes across 18 starts, with Isak playing 1174 minutes over 13 starts

Wilson does come out on top for all the statistics shown in the table apart from xA per 90, having the most actual returns and FPL points per 90 as well as expected numbers. Overall, he has an impressive 1.05 returns per 90 minutes. However, Isak also has good numbers. Wilson does pull further ahead in expected statistics. He has a npxG of 12.73 (0.70 per 90) compared to Isak’s 5.96 (0.46 per 90). He also has had a greater assist potential, though most FPL managers will be focused on goal-scoring form.

Per 90, both players are quite close in terms of goal attempts, with Wilson registering 3.30 and Isak registering 3.07. Wilson has had an impressive 1.32 big chances per 90 compared to Isak’s 0.92. For shots on target per 90, they are almost even (1.69 for Wilson and 1.60 for Isak).

Wilson does have the advantage of being Newcastle’s first-choice penalty taker. When he is off the pitch, Isak has taken them.

Overall, this is quite a close battle. Both have a brilliant 50% goal involvement this season (with Wilson having a slightly higher FPL goal involvement of 53%). Therefore, both have been involved in half of Newcastle’s goals this season.

In the last six matches:

  • Wilson has played 318 minutes compared to Isak’s 436
  • Wilson has 5 goals; Isak has 3
  • Both have had 12 goal attempts
  • Wilson has had 5 big chances to Isak’s 3
  • Wilson has created 5 chances; Isak has created 3

Predicted Minutes

Both players have been a minutes risk this season. For the upcoming double gameweek, Fantasy Football Hub predicts Isak to play 168 minutes, with Wilson predicted 122 minutes. Because of this, he is projected to score more points (10.8) than Wilson (9.2). Both point projections are still great, but overall Wilson is considered to be more of a minutes risk in GW36. There is a chance we get a leak before the FPL deadline for the Leeds fixture, so this can at least tell us who will be starting that game.

Newcastle Statistics and Fixtures

It’s worth looking into Newcastle’s numbers and upcoming fixtures to see why both players are very popular picks for GW36.

This season, Newcastle are:

  • 6th for goals scored (61); 3rd in the last six matches (15)
  • 5th for xG (63.58); 5th in the last six matches (13.81)
  • 6th for goal attempts (495); 4th in the last six matches (92)
  • 7th for shots on target (170); joint-6th in the last six matches (31)
  • 4th for big chances (98); joint-5th in the last six matches (19)

Therefore, they have been a great attacking team and their assets have offered great value in FPL.

Their remaining fixtures are as follows:

lee, BHALEIche

Their first FW36 opponents Leeds have conceded the most goals of any team this season (69), with Leicester are not far behind on 64. Brighton have been a stronger defensive team this season, but have just been beaten 5-1 by Everton.

Wilson vs Isak: The Verdict Ahead of DGW36

This is definitely a comparison where I think picking both players is a viable option, and one that I’m personally considering, though because of my team structure, this will be difficult to do so. So, personally, I think bringing in both players is the best option if you are able to do so, and offers a much greater upside than having double Newcastle defence.

I think Isak is currently being favored among the FPL community on Twitter. He is a very exciting asset and a solid captaincy choice for this week. I think he is also less of a minutes risk at the moment compared to Wilson. However, as Wilson has slightly lower ownership and has registered better numbers that Isak, if I were to pick only pick one of them at the moment it would be him. If I go into GW36 without Isak, I am quite worried he will do well, but it’s a risk I’m willing to take. They both have great numbers and are very close in the data, so it is a tough call.

We could also get a team leak before the next deadline for the Newcastle line-up, so I would definitely hold off on the transfer for now – as this could change your transfer plans.
