Let’s dive right into it. We will start with the first one.
FPL GW23 Tips – Preview and Dilemmas Answered
1) Which DGW23 players to get on your team?
Arsenal and Man City have a double gameweek in GW23. Starting with defenders, you should be good to go if you have one defender from Arsenal/Man City. Gabriel is an excellent pick if you are looking at the Arsenal defence. He looks nailed and should start both games in GW23. Man City defenders are not a must-have. There is some degree of a rotation expected in the Man City backline. Plus, they are not keeping clean sheets.
Coming to midfielders, there are many options from both Arsenal and Man City.
We have Martinelli, Odegaard and Saka as the Arsenal trio. Saka and Odegaard are my preferred combination. Both are nailed starters in the team and have done well in the Arsenal attack. Martinelli, too, has been one of the best value midfielders in the game this season, but lately, he has seen some reduced minutes. (rotation with Trossard) Also, the big hauls have dried up, and I am okay with replacing Martinelli with Odegaard as the high-value option.
Man City has KDB and Mahrez as the two standout options in midfield. Kevin De Bruyne will likely get more minutes, especially after getting benched against Tottenham last week. Mahrez, though, is the more explosive option. He is always up there in terms of goal-scoring, and the points ceiling for Mahrez seems higher than KDB. If you can afford one and are going safe, go for KDB. If the idea is to be aggressive, then it’s Mahrez.
I assume everybody has Haaland in their teams, so there is little to discuss here. Eddie Nketiah is an excellent striker option from Arsenal. He is also nailed right now, with Jesus still not fit. His underlying stats are the best among all Arsenal attackers, and he is a great second striker for most FPL teams after Haaland.

2) Who are the best defenders to get in your FPL team?
Many FPL managers are looking to get in slightly cheaper defenders to play a strong midfield five in a 3-5-2. For this reason, nailing those three defenders has become crucial. Like Haaland, many managers own Trippier, and he is still the best defender in the game. That leaves us with just two spots and many options to choose from.
If you are looking for a solid premium option, then Gabriel from Arsenal is great. This season, he has been brilliant for Arsenal playing as their CB. Ben White has been a great enabler pick, but there are some rumours of him losing his place in the Arsenal XI. I still expect White to start and Tomiyasu to make an odd appearance every few games. If you want to be completely safe, get Gabriel (£5.2m) instead.
It feels strange to me not talking about Man City defenders straight away. That is how problematic it has been to guess Man City’s backline. On top of that, they are not keeping clean sheets. Man City defenders are optional, but Akanji/Ake are the most nailed picks if you want to go for one. Both have been decent for City but don’t provide much goal threat. Other attacking defenders, like Lewis, Walker etc., are rotated a lot, and it’s better to avoid them altogether.
Looking at cheap alternatives, you can get in James Tarkowski from Everton. The Toffees were brilliant against Arsenal, and Sean Dyche will tighten things at the back. Everton doubles in GW25 and doesn’t take away much of your money.
An alternate option is Max Kilman (£4.3m) from Wolves, who has a confirmed fixture in GW25 and can sit on your bench for most weeks. If you want additional security for GW28, Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings (£4.3m) is another option if you feel he can give you some decent returns. He plays in GW25 and can also help you navigate the GW28 blank.

3) Is it okay to play the Triple Captain on Haaland in GW23?
This week, using the Triple Captain chip is a widespread discussion in the FPL community. The most obvious choice is Erling Haaland. The Man City attacker has been in great form, getting 28 attacking returns this season.
Man City’s fixtures in GW23 read AVL(H) and ARS(A). Aston Villa was relatively poor against Leicester last week, and that matchup gives me a lot of confidence. Haaland can easily score a hattrick in that game and get us a considerable haul. The slight concern for me is the Arsenal game. They are a good defence and can shut Haaland out, as we saw against Tottenham.
There is also potential for double gameweeks in the future (GW25/29/34/37), but we don’t know what the game state will be, what exact fixtures will fall in place (especially for 29/24/37) and whether a high-performing player like Haaland will be fit at that point of time.
Playing Haaland as Triple Captain is a safe move, as he will likely be the most captained player this week. Suppose you are looking at other options for triple captaincy. In that case, KDB/Mahrez can be great alternatives to Haaland. They both have haul potential but surely not more than Haaland.
Suppose you are trying to gain ground on your mini-league rivals and want to have fun. In that case, you can play your Triple Captain later instead of going to Haaland in Double GW23. That is still the safer option of the two. Haaland is still the best FPL player this season. Despite having a tricky game against Arsenal away, the home game against Aston Villa is quite appealing.
If you want to be aggressive this week, you can choose any other Man City/Arsenal attacker. Both sets of players have been in good form and are a part of two of the strongest attacks in the league this season.

4) What to do with Man United players?
Man United players (i.e. Shaw, Fernandes and Rashford) are all perfect holds if you have the right double gameweek players from Arsenal and Man City this week. Now, who are the right set of players?
Let’s say you have an Arsenal/Man City or even two of them. It is only viable to sell Shaw if you are trying to generate funds to get in a double gameweek player in your FPL team or at least get some cover for the GW25 blank. In most other cases, hold Shaw this week.
Rashford is another player worth holding this week. He has been in great form for Man United and can do well against Leeds in GW23. He is costing little money and can stay in your team until GW24. Gameweek 25 is a blank gameweek for Rashford, and depending on how many other blank gameweek players you have, you can take a call on whether to hold him or not.
Bruno Fernandes is a tricky one. He was unlucky not to get anything in the game against Leeds, and I won’t be surprised if he hauls big this week against them. Now, if there is no other route to get in a second Man City attacker, I’d recommend selling him for Kevin De Bruyne. (if you have the budget). If you already have KDB and want to go Mahrez, I’d do the Fernandes-Mahrez switch for a free transfer but not for a hit. There is always a chance that Pep rotates in the double gameweek and Fernandes outscores Mahrez.
One thing to note is that by getting in Mahrez right now, you get an additional player with a fixture in GW25. This scenario changes if you are Free Hitting in GW25. If you decide to use the chip, you can keep Bruno right now, and Free Hit him out of your team for the blank in GW25.

5) Should you play your Wildcard this week?
With two premium teams (Arsenal & Man City) having a double gameweek in GW23, there is an opportunity for FPL managers to use the Wildcard this week. The question remains – should you play your Wildcard this week?
A Wildcard is unnecessary if most of your team already includes players from Man City, Arsenal, etc. Suppose your team even has players like Almiron, Martinelli, White etc. You can take them out through regular transfers, and you don’t need to use the Wildcard chip.
On the other hand, if your team consists of the majority of players from Man United, Newcastle, Brighton and even Brentford, a Wildcard will sort your team as you can attack this double gameweek and the fixtures beyond.
Another thing to note is that this week’s Wildcard team might be similar to the template team (team comprising popular picks). If you are far off from that scenario, you can go on the offensive and set up a strong squad for Doubles in GW23 and GW25. You will also be ahead of FPL managers, taking multiple hits to field their desired team in both these weeks.
If you are far from your ideal team, using the Wildcard should give you stability, but make sure to list the pros and cons before hitting that Wildcard button. Using it in Double GW23 instead of later might leave you exposed for blank or even bigger double gameweeks. It’s essential to look at your team, see what you are gaining and letting go and accordingly take the call.
