Man City Analysis Going into FPL DGW23

Assessing Recent Changes

Since the World Cup, Man City have undergone several drastic changes. After a first half of the season in which the lineup was very secure week-to-week, a sort of revolution happened. Along with various selection decisions about “body language,” Pep decided to alter the team’s primary formation; which, in turn, forced certain players out of the team and ushered others in. Most notably, Rico Lewis and Nathan Ake have been favored over Joao Cancelo (now at Bayern Munich) and Kyle Walker at fullback. On the wings, Jack Grealish and Riyad Mahrez have been favored over Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva.

Seven PL games since the World Cup break, the situation has settled a bit. However, it’s worth noting that everything is still in flux to a degree. Pep is still tinkering with the system dynamics and several key players are returning from illness or injury. As much as we think we may know, there’s much that is subject to change.

I will say, one thing I expect to persist is the new, post-World Cup formation. To briefly describe what has happened, the backline has shifted from a 2-3 in-possession to a 3-2. Instead of fullbacks like Cancelo and Walker pushing up alongside Rodri (leaving two center backs behind them), only one fullback moves alongside Rodri, with the other dropping deep. This forms a back-3, with a double pivot of Rodri and one other in front.

Given Cancelo’s departure and the remaining defenders at the club, this 3-2 formation best suits City. With a lack of natural LBs and a plethora of CBs, along with Rico Lewis who so perfectly slides into that double pivot next to Rodri, the 3-2 best suits City long-term. In any particular match, Pep can opt for something different; but long-term, I expect this to be City’s main system.

General FPL DGW23 Approach

Before I get into each FPL asset, we should gauge our perspective for DGW23 overall.

In my opinion, the highest priority for everyone in DGW23 should be getting on your favored Arsenal triple-up. Arsenal assets are more generally more consistent than City assets this season and they also double again in GW25. Nketiah, Odegaard, and Saka are my three favorite Arsenal picks, with Gabriel as an excellent defensive pick. With high effective ownership (EO) across the board, your rank will likely be hurting if you don’t cover your Arsenal bases.

Before you get greedy with any City assets, I would sort out an Arsenal triple-up.

Once you do that, if you have free transfers left over (or are stubborn enough to go against Arsenal), we can look at targeting City assets.

DGW23 Starting Odds

Every Gameweek, I put together City Starting Odds, alongside my Starting XI prediction. You can normally find both on my Twitter (@4lex_mcfc), but as I have tentative odds put together for DGW23, I figured I’d add them.

These are just my opinion, but I use a position-by-position process to turn my judgement into figures, and many find them helpful. The left graphic is each player’s odds to start at least one game in DGW23 and the right graphic is each player’s odds to start both games in DGW23.

It’s worth keeping these figures in mind as I assess each asset.

Goalkeepers

I’ll keep this short: Ederson is not a good FPL pick.

As much as he’s the most nailed City defender, you have to compare him solely to other GKs. Once we do that, we realize Ederson is overpriced, to say the least. He doesn’t have the ceiling that other GKs (like Kepa, for example) have, which simply makes him a worse pick than many other options. If you own him, he’s a perfectly fine asset for DGW23, but I’d consider that spot long-term. If you don’t own him, you shouldn’t be considering him, as much as the DGW for a “nailed defender” can be tempting.

Man City Defenders

To note, John Stones is currently injured and should be out until GW26.

Most importantly, I don’t think it’s all that wise to use a transfer on a City defender in DGW23. There are bigger priorities elsewhere (Arsenal and City attack), I expect a maximum of 1/2 clean sheets, and it’s hard to guess who gets 2/2 starts. If you own a City defender, I’d likely hold them. If you have an extra transfer to make this type of move, or you just really want to bring in a City defender, here are my thoughts:

City’s fit defenders at the moment include: Akanji, Ake, Dias, Gomez, Laporte, Lewis, and Walker

I’ll start with the defenders that you can simply ignore for DGW23:

  • Sergio Gomez is simply not likely to get PL minutes soon, so he’s an easy avoid
  • Kyle Walker is not first-choice at RCB and the new system doesn’t really suit him; long-term, I expect him to generally start the harder fixtures, so he’s an easy avoid
  • Ruben Dias is coming back from injury, and while I expect him to be first-choice long-term, DGW23 comes too quick to consider him (especially at 5.9 m)
  • Aymeric Laporte is currently second-choice behind Ake at LCB and Akanji/Dias at CCB; I expect him to get consistent starts soon, but like Dias, DGW23 comes too quick and he is too expensive for consideration

This leaves us with three defenders for consideration: Akanji, Ake, and Lewis

Man City Defenders Rankings for FPL DGW23

My ranking is as follows:

  1. Manuel Akanji (5.0 m) – high positional flexibility (CCB/RCB) and first-choice while Stones is out, Akanji’s minutes are pretty secure in the short-term; long-term, UCL rotation will likely leave him with consistent starts in easy PL fixtures; lastly, he’s not someone you expect to sub on and off, it should consistently be either 0 or 90 minutes
  2. Rico Lewis (3.9 m) – the starboy is the crux of City’s new 3-2 formation and with that, he should have consistent starts long-term; however, he is prone to substitutions, which is not what you want for an FPL defender; at 3.9 m, he’s certainly a bargain, but he’s not quite a game-breaker and I prefer the consistency I expect from Akanji
  3. Nathan Ake (5.1 m) – many people’s favorite City defender, Ake has looked exceptional as of late; however, he can only play LCB in the 3-2 and he has Laporte breathing down his neck for the first-choice role; also prone to substitutions, I prefer Lewis’s xMins and Akanji’s consistency

Man City Midfielders

While I don’t recommend using a transfer on a City defender, the midfielders are much different. While Arsenal assets should be top priority, KDB and Mahrez follow just behind. Let me explain why…

As I did with the defenders, I’ll start with the midfielders you can ignore for DGW23:

  • Palmer, Perrone, and Phillips are all not expected to start either game, they’re easy avoids
  • Rodri is nailed, but doesn’t often get attacking returns; with so many good midfielders elsewhere, he’s an easy avoid
  • Bernardo and Gundogan have had their time as FPL assets, but right now is not one of those times; neither have high odds to start 2/2 and when they do start, they haven’t been getting involved in attacking returns, as of late
  • Foden was out of favor, then he had a foot injury, then he had an illness; I expect him to come back into the fold in DGW23, but not enough to consider him over Grealish or Mahrez; one to keep an eye on, but sadly not an option for DGW23

Like the defense, this leaves us with three midfielders for consideration: Grealish, KDB, and Mahrez

Man City Midfielders Rankings for FPL DGW23

Man City Midfielders Rankings for FPL DGW23
  1. Kevin De Bruyne (12.4 m) – while some may be put off by KDB’s recent benchings, I would assure you those were strictly tactical; in certain games, Pep opts for Alvarez over KDB; while that’s not good for a >12 m asset, I fully expect KDB to start both in DGW23; his underlying stats are just as good as pre-World Cup (even though they haven’t resulted in returns) and we all know how important he is to City’s success in general
  2. Riyad Mahrez (7.7 m) – quite a distance behind KDB is Mahrez, who has been in incredible form; as good as Mahrez has been of late, no one in the City squad is immune to rotation; eventually, Mahrez will be rotated, and we don’t really know when; personally, I don’t think he has huge upside in DGW23 and whether he starts in B/DGW25 is completely unknown; he’s still a good pick for DGW23, and certainly one of the best differentials, but I’m not blown away by his prospects
  3. Jack Grealish (6.8 m) – while I don’t think you should look past KDB and Mahrez, maybe some will only have the funds to afford Grealish; like Mahrez, he has been amazing lately, however he has lacked the final product to really be an FPL consideration; he’s certainly a punt, and I personally wouldn’t be thinking of buying, but it’s not the stupidest move someone could make

Man City Attackers Rankings for FPL DGW23

This section is easy for me, as there are only two City forwards: Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez.

I have very little to say about Haaland. If you’re worried about his minutes in DGW23, I would say you shouldn’t be. I expect him to start both and if he is to get a rest soon, it’s most likely to come in GW24, ahead of City’s R16 UCL tie against RB Leipzig. Most everyone should be owning and captaining Haaland in DGW23.

Julian Alvarez, sadly, is not much of an FPL option for DGW23. If he happens to get minutes, he’s certainly a good pick. Long-term, there will probably come a time this season when Alvarez is a great pick for a stretch of games. However, in DGW23, expecting more than two cameos from Alvarez is unrealistic, in my opinion.

Bruno to KDB for FPL DGW23?

Bruno to KDB for FPL DGW23?

A popular question many will be facing is whether to move Bruno to KDB for DGW23, after many moved KDB to Bruno for DGW22. My advice would be to assess the Wednesday United-Leeds game, see how Bruno’s role is affected without Casemiro and see how Leeds play without Marsch, then decide. Generally, I like the Bruno to KDB move, as I think KDB’s upside and fixture in GW25 justifies it. One could also move Bruno to KDB now, then KDB to Salah ahead of Salah’s DGW in 25. If Bruno’s second game against Leeds in DGW23 looks like a potential haul, there’s a strong argument to keep him and use your FTs elsewhere. I personally don’t like Bruno to KDB for a -4.

Triple Captain Haaland in FPL DGW23 or Wait?

Triple Captain Haaland in FPL DGW23 or Wait?

For those who still have their Triple Captain, my question would be: what better opportunity are you waiting for?

Haaland has two fixtures and should start both, although one is against a tough Arsenal defense. If you are someone who wants to wait for a Gameweek when Haaland faces a relegation side, fair enough. If you are someone who wants to wait for a better Double Gameweek, I would be careful with that. There aren’t many options that stand out to me other than Haaland, and in City’s future Double Gameweeks, Haaland will be at a worse risk of rotation.

It’s up to you, but I would be using my Triple Captain on Haaland in DGW23 if I still had it.

Conclusion on Man City FPL DGW23

Summary on Man City attackers to target for FPL DGW23

All-in-all, Haaland and KDB are the two City assets I would look to own for DGW23. Mahrez, Akanji, and Lewis are also options (in that order), but I wouldn’t be hard pressed to bring any of them in – they’re all risks to a degree. I would prioritize Arsenal assets, then KDB, then other City assets; and I do not think any City asset it worth a hit.
