Best Captain Picks for World Cup Fantasy MD5

1) Neymar/Richarlison vs Croatia – Day 1

Best Captain Picks for MD5- Richarlison

Brazil demolished South Korea in the RO16 and is up against Croatia on Matchday 5. There are a couple of strikers who are viable captaincy options on Day 1.

With Jesus injured and out of the tournament, Richarlison will keep his place in attack. His price is only $7.5m in the game. It provides an excellent opportunity to invest funds in other areas of the pitch. Talking about his goal-scoring form, the Brazilian forward scored three goals and will look to add to that tally against Croatia.

Coming to Neymar, he started against South Korea and barring any last-minute niggles; he is likely to start this quarter-final game. Neymar stands out in the star-studded Brazilian attack, playing a central attacking role. We know he is also on penalties and is a great differential captaincy option if you are chasing rank.

Suppose you are looking to go ultra differential. In that case, Vinicius Junior is another option to look at but considering his price is the same as Neymar. I will go for the latter, especially for captaincy.

2) Lionel Messi vs Netherlands – Day 1

Best Captain Picks for MD5- Messi

Messi is a great captaincy option for yet another Matchday. He has been quite influential in how Argentina has progressed in the attack. With four attacking returns (3G+1A), he is the second-highest-scoring forward in the World Cup Fantasy game.

The Dutch defence tends to concede the odd goal. The return of Di Maria to the playing XI will also enhance Messi’s attacking potential. We know Messi is the talisman of the Argentina side and is likely to be involved in whatever the team creates going forward.

He is likely to be the most captained player for at least Day 1 and is an excellent option if you want to play safe and not take many risks

I won’t look at other Argentina players, as none of them has been consistent enough to merit the captaincy discussion. If you are going for an Argentinian option, Messi is one to go for.

3) Kylian Mbappe vs England – Day 2

Best Captain Picks for MD5- Mbappe

The best option on Day 2 is Kylian Mbappe from France. The Frenchmen is the highest-scoring player in World Cup Fantasy and has been in fine form. In four games in this tournament, he already has seven attacking returns (5G+ 2A)

France faces England, who has looked strong at the back with three clean sheets in four games. France, though, will provide a stern test to the English backline. Mbappe is most likely to be up against Walker, and this matchup can very well decide the tie. I expect Mbappe to have a good game and give us an excellent attacking haul.

I understand the urge to do things differently at this stage, as gaining rank is difficult. For me, Giroud represents a decent alternative, but Mbappe is still the standout captaincy option. If the Messi/Neymar captaincy doesn’t work for you, Mbappe is an excellent 2nd captaincy pick to look at for Matchday 5.

Alternate options – Bruno Fernandes vs Morocco – Day 2

Best Captain Picks for MD5- Bruno Fernandes

Now this one is an interesting captaincy choice for Matchday 5. Undoubtedly one of the most differential captaincy picks out there. Fernandes has been in great form in the tournament, with 5 attacking returns (2G+3A) to his name. Portugal scored six goals against Switzerland in Matchday 4, and Bruno getting just one assist will feel unfair to fantasy owners.

Still, if you are looking at a high-upside option, Bruno Fernandes is up there. Like Matchday 4, I doubt many managers will look at him for captaincy. Still, he is an excellent differential if you want to go against the crowd and the safe Mbappe pick on Day 2

An even more differential pick will be Gonacalo Ramos if he starts. He silenced his doubters, who said he shouldn’t have been the player to replace Ronaldo in the starting XI. The Portuguese forward scored a hat-trick bullying the Swiss defence. Portugal probably has the best fixture from an attacking sense. Investing in the forward is a bit risky, but it is one of the ways to catch up on rank.

An England Attacker (Kane/Saka/Foden/Bellingham) – Day 2

Choosing an England attacker against France doesn’t look that appealing, as the fixture will be tough. Still, England’s attack has done well, scoring twelve goals in four games in the tournament. The golden question remains: which player to go from the England attack?

I am starting with Harry Kane, who has been in decent form. He is the no9 for England but tends to drop deep at times to help out the wide players. The attacking potential of wide players like Saka/Foden/Rashford will be slightly higher than Kane.

Among those wide players, one of Rashford/Saka and Foden is likely to start. If I am going for one right now, I will go for Foden or Bellingham if the budget is a slight issue. Based on the lineups before the game, you can switch if your selected player isn’t starting.

It’s a big dilemma right now, and guessing the right England attackers looks tough, but it can be a game-changer for your team.

Using the ‘Power Captain’ Chip

Suppose you are not confident about which players to go for in terms of captaincy. In that case, you can even use the ‘Power Captain’ booster in Matchday 5. It means the highest-scoring player in your team automatically becomes the captain and scores 2x points.

Using it in the semi-final or the final is probably better, as choosing the right captaincy option will only get tougher from here onwards. Matchday 5 still has some good fixtures to target, and the fact that we can get it right in two attempts makes me want to save the ‘Power Captain’ chip for a later Matchday.
