World Cup Fantasy: Best Captain Picks for MD4 | Round of 16

Welcome to Insanely Football‘s MD4/Round of 16 World Cup Fantasy Captaincy blog for the tournament.

Only sixteen teams remain in the tournament, and we have some exciting fixtures in the RO16. As we progress further in the game, nailing the captaincy will be even more crucial for a good finish. In this blog, we will cover the best captaincy options for MD4.

Let’s get into it, then!

Remember, you can change captaincy only once after your initial captain has played. Read more on how captaincy works in world cup fantasy

Best Captain Picks for World Cup Fantasy MD4

1) Lionel Messi vs Australia – Day 1

Best MD4 Captain picks ~ Messi

Messi is the standout captaincy option for yet another Matchday. He has been quite influential in how Argentina has progressed in the attack. With three attacking returns (2G+1A), he is the 3rd highest-scoring forward in the world cup fantasy game.

Australia has done well to advance to the knockout stages, but this should be a slightly easier fixture for Argentina, given the difference in quality between both teams. We know Messi is the talisman of the Argentina side and is likely to be involved in whatever the team creates going forward

He is likely to be the most captained player for at least Day 1 and is an excellent option if you want to play safe and not take many risks.

2) Kylian Mbappe vs Poland – Day 2

Best MD4 Captain picks ~ Mbappe

The best possible option on Day 2 is Kylian Mbappe from France. The Frenchmen is the highest-scoring player in World Cup Fantasy and has been in fine form. The French national team looked a bit toothless in attack without Mbappe, as he was rested against Tunisia in MD3. They will surely want to return to winning ways, and Mbappe will lead the line against Poland.

Poland will most likely sit back and defend, but it will not be easy against the dangerous French attack. There were some injury concerns about Mbappe in Matchday 3, but he is good to go. If the Messi captaincy doesn’t work for you, Mbappe is an excellent 2nd captaincy pick to look at for Matchday 4.

3) Richarlison/Neymar vs South Korea – Day 3

Best MD4 Captain picks ~ Richarlison

Brazil is playing South Korea in the RO16, and you can undoubtedly make a case to go for their attackers in terms of captaincy.

Richarlison has been the first-choice striker for Brazil and has a good of starting the game against Korea. He didn’t start the final match against Cameroon, as Jesus was given the nod, but I feel this is Richarlison’s place to lose. His performances have been decent so far, and if you are looking to target a set Brazil attacker, he is the one to go for your team.

Coming to Neymar, there is a chance he has sustained ligament damage which would rule him out of the rest of the World Cup in a major blow to Brazil. The team will assess Neymar’s condition before the RO16 fixture; based on that, you can take a call.

It is a considerable risk, but if he is declared fit, you can captain him. He still might limited minutes as he is not likely to be rushed back, but it is worth it if you are chasing rank at this stage.

4) Bruno Fernandes/Ronaldo vs Switzerland – Day 4

Best MD4 Captain picks ~ Bruno Fernandes

Now this one is an interesting captaincy option for Matchday 4. They are the most differential captaincy options out there. Fernandes has been in great form in the tournament, with 3 attacking returns (2G+1A) to his name. He was rested entirely against South Korea and will be fresh to face Switzerland in the RO16.

If you are looking at high-upside options, Bruno Fernandes is up there. His ownership is 17% at the time of writing this article. Though it may increase before Matchday 4, I wonder if there will be a lot of maverick managers out there going for him.

If you have Ronaldo, you can look at him too, but I like Fernandes more because of how much the ball he has in general. He can create something from nothing and has many outlets to points in the fantasy game.

Alternate options Gakpo/Depay vs USA – Day 1

Best MD4 Captain picks ~ Gakpo

Another way to go in captaincy is to opt for one of the Netherlands’ attackers. Though it is not a straightforward game for the Netherlands, they are still ahead of the USA in terms of winning odds and overall team quality.

If you want to play it safe, Gakpo is the one to go for captaincy. He has been Netherlands’ leading man in attack and is likely to get something in the game. If you are okay with the risk and are looking at a differential punt, then Depay is another option

He is coming back from an injury, which is always a risk. Still, he is Netherland’s talisman going forward and should be heavily involved in most attacks.

An England Attacker (Kane/Sterling/Saka/Foden/Rashford) – Day 2

Best MD4 Captain picks ~ Saka

Choosing one England attacker is one of the most challenging calls to make in Matchday 4. We are now coming to the question, which one to choose? There are so many good options, and because of that, rotation can be a big issue for us.

Kane has been in decent form, but he is playing more of a support role and doesn’t appear to be that explosive. You can go for one of the wide players. Sterling and Saka look likely to start, but Rashford and Foden both have done exceptionally well coming from the bench

It’s a big dilemma right now, and guessing the right England attackers look tough but might become a game-changer for your team. If I am going for a midfielder, I will take a chance with Saka. The forward option is Harry Kane, the most nailed player in the attack
