It’s that time of the year again. The first international break of the season is throwing up some weird surprises (let’s be honest, does this ever NOT happen?? Just bring back club football already. *sad noises*). This has seen a very large section of FPL Managers activate the Wildcard button ahead of FPL Gameweek 9. It allows us to overhaul our squads as well as navigate the price changes which have been so volatile that even Wall Street folks are going to faint at the sight of it.
This chip provides the opportunity to create a 15-man squad up towards the World Cup. Since there will be additional matches almost every midweek heading up to November, it is important to pick players who will be playing 90 minutes week-in and week-out.
Here, we have picked the Best 6 players who have started the season on blistering form and can provide mega returns.

Must Own Defenders in Your FPL Gameweek 9 Wildcard Team
1) João Cancelo (Defender)
Going without the portuguese defender is basically suicide. With TAA not returning as per his usual standards, it’s fair to say that Cancelo looks like the one who might rack up the returns.
Given the licence to fly in Pep’s system, the full-back has a goal and an assist from 7 games along with 4 clean sheets. He has also attempted 8 shots too, outlining his goal threat. He has a total of 42 points so far
Man City Fixtures FPL GW9-16:
City’s fixtures are also very good going forward, albeit a word of caution on a triple up due to the GW12 blank for the postponed game against Arsenal
Cancelo Numbers & heatmap
- ICT Index= 36.8 (5th for Defenders, 42nd Overall)
- Influence= 136.4 (15th)
- Creativity= 131.2 (8th)
- Threat= 101.0 (7th)
- Form= 7.7
- BPS= 172
Cancelo ranks second for most points amongst defenders with only Saliba outscoring him so far.

2) Reece James (Defender)
In a season where it’s been utter chaos at The SW6 with regards to managerial changes and transfer activity, Reece James looks like someone who could benefit massively from the appointment of Graham Potter
Primarily a right-back by trade, James was often deputising at RCB to accommodate Ruben Loftus-Cheek for the first quarter of the season so far. This saw him muster up a few below par performances.
Despite this, he has still managed a goal and an assist plus a clean sheet.Chelsea’s fixtures are also very good heading up to the World Cup break in November. Also, if you’re not keen on keeping him long-term, he could also serve as a placeholder for Trent in future GW’s IF he comes to form.
Chelsea Fixtures FPL GW9-16:
Reece James numbers & heatmap
- ICT Index= 33.1 (9th for Defenders,60th Overall)
- Influence= 125.0 (25th)
- Creativity= 129.0 (13th)
- Threat= 77.0 (9th)
- Form= 0.5
- BPS= 118

Must Own Midfielders in Your FPL Gameweek 9 Wildcard Team
3) Wilfried Zaha (Midfielder)
Who doesn’t love a loyal talismanic figure who could have made a huge name but is a player loved by the streets and looks like finally hitting his true potential?
Ever since Roy Hodgson’s departure from Selhurst Park, Crystal Palace have looked a lot different. Gone are the days of long-ball, over-the-top running in behind tactics. Viera-ball is a whole lot different with a balance in defence and attack
And this is a lot more evident in Zaha’s numbers as well. Scoring 4 goals from 15 shots attempted, with 12 of them coming from inside the box. The Ivorian also has penalties in his locker.
Crystal Palace’s fixtures also turn for the better with only 2 of the next 8 games having an FDR of more than 2
My recommendation, He is a MUST BUY!
Crystal Palace Fixtures FPL GW9-16:
Wilfried Zaha Numbers & heatmap
- ICT Index= 50.0 (13th for Midfielders,19th Overall)
- Influence= 181.4 (7th)
- Creativity= 91.0 (50th)
- Threat= 227.0 (9th)
- Form= 5.0
- BPS= 90

4) James Maddison (Midfielder)
For everything wrong with the Foxes so far this year, sitting bottom with only 1 point from 7 games,James Maddison has been a bright light in an utter shambles of a campaign so far for the Midlands outfit
The 25-year old attacking midfielder has 3 goals and 1 assist in 7 games while attempting 20 shots. In this tally, he also managed goals away at Arsenal and Tottenham, highlighting his potential to bag against any opposition.
Granted that at 7.9m FPL Pounds, he might be a bit expensive considering the circumstances but Leicester’s fixtures do turn after the break and he might be worth a punt if you fancy it.
Leicester Fixtures FPL GW9-16:
Maddison Numbers & heatmap:
- ICT Index= 57.5 (7th for Midfielders,12th Overall)
- Influence= 182.4 (6th)
- Creativity= 174.5 (14th)
- Threat= 217.0 (10th)
- Form= 3.3
- BPS= 114

Must Own Forwards in Your FPL Gameweek 9 Wildcard Team
5) Erling Haaland (Forward)
Were you one of those managers who was put off by Haaland’s miss in the Community shield back in pre-season? But then shamelessly came back on him once he started banging in those goals? Don’t worry, you’re not alone.
73 POINTS (YES,THAT’S CORRECT!)
11 Goals (That’s about a goal per 14 touches)
1 Assist
Do I really need to say anything more about him??
‘Hitting the ground running’ would be an understatement. He literally blew the ground away.
He is certainly not a normal human. He is a machine.
Plus who doesn’t want an FPL asset who scores loads of goals and gives awesome post match interviews
Man City Fixtures FPL GW9-16:
Haaland Numbers & heatmap
- ICT Index= 90.1 (2nd for Forwards,2nd Overall)
- Influence= 387.4 (1st)
- Creativity= 50.3 (16th)
- Threat= 463.0 (2nd)
- Form= 12.2
- BPS= 307

6) Aleksandar Mitrovic (Forward)
Fulham have quietly been having a good season so far, unlike what many of us were expecting. Marco Silva has got them playing this good brand of football and it is reflecting in their results as well
The Serbian target-man is a big reason for that, scoring 6 goals so far this season, out of which 4 came against the likes of Liverpool (2), Arsenal and Spurs.
He has taken 31 shots which highlight his threat and makes him a great option to partner Haaland up top at only 6.9 mil
Fulham’s fixtures also turn, with them having to only play CIty and United back-to-back in the last 2 games before the World Cup. He is a must have if you don’t have him right now.
Fulham Fixtures FPL GW9-16:
Mitrovic numbers & heatmap
- ICT Index= 75.2 (4th for Forwards, 5th Overall)
- Influence= 269.0 (3rd)
- Creativity= 76.8 (9th)
- Threat= 405.0 (4th)
- Form= 5.8
- BPS= 149
