Last week, we introduced a new facet to our weekend reviews – hearing from the club fans’ directly on how their teams fared along with the deadly combination of Eye tests & Stats. Fans from Arsenal, Newcastle, Wolves, Fulham & Chelsea made their presence felt. In this FPL GW2 review, we will get to hear from Everton, Nottingham Forest, Chelsea, Tottenham & Southampton friends.

FPL GW3 Review

This week’s results:

FPL GW2 of the 22/23 season witnessed some super-attacking & highly strategic football by the home teams, namely Chelsea, Brentford, Forest, & Southampton (2nd half). There were penalties missed (2), the woodwork was hit on a few occasions (5), and the first RED CARD of the season to a certain Darwin.

Here is a breakdown of the goals scored this week:

• The weekend saw 28 goals scored with the highest and lowest xGs from open plays being 1.97 (LIV) & 0.12 (FUL) respectively. On the other hand, the highest and lowest xGs from set plays were measured at 1.72 (ARS) & 0.00 (BOU & MUN) respectively

• We saw the highest over-performance on xG by Brentford (4 goals: xG 1.61) and the highest under-performance by West Ham (0 goals: xG 2.26 including a penalty)

FPL GW2 Review: Data

Let’s take a look at the Team Data where we will be focussing on the following metrics:

• Top Team xG contributors (new addition)
• Shots on Target
• Mins/chance
• Big chances conceded

TOP TEAM xG CONTRIBUTORS (%)

This metric will give us a fair bit of an idea of individuals who generated their team’s highest xG and how much effort was put in behind that.

• Rodrigo (LEE) was at the heart of everything Leeds was involved in. 2/3rd of team xG (1.93) came through him.
• Keep an eye on players from teams with low xG — Zaha, Mitrovic, Kyle Water Peters & Maddison
• Another important thing to notice is Rice taking the penalty while Antonio & Bowen being present on the field

SHOTS ON TARGET

• Arsenal & Manchester City were all over Leicester & Bournemouth which was nothing abnormal
• The 2 results of the week were home wins for Brentford (an emphatic 4-0) and Forest’s first win over West Ham
• As had been mentioned by Forest’s Steve Cooper during the week about making Forest Road a fortress, his players and the fans didn’t disappoint and lived up to the expectation

MINUTES PER CHANCE

• Liverpool was clearly the most wasteful team of the week with 2nd lowest shot conversion % (16.7). It will be difficult to say if Nunez’s red card (the dumbest thing of the week) had an impact on the proceedings as Liverpool got more attacking post the Uruguayan’s unfortunate removal

• Arsenal & Manchester City were relentless on all attacking fronts with 4 goals a piece from equal # of attempts
• Brentford played out a sensational attacking first half which found Manchester United gasping for mercy and someone to calm things down on the pitch. The Bees had 53.8% of their 13 attempts on target followed by Tottenham (50%) and Forest (46.2%)

BIG CHANCES CONCEDED

• Before the weekend, it was a foregone conclusion that Manchester City will steamroll Bournemouth from all possible angles. Well, Bournemouth not featuring on this list gives them some sort of credibility going forward

• Leicester – with the whole Fofana rumors doing the rounds – seems to not have improved from last season’s defensive frailties. They have conceded the joint highest big chances already.
• Liverpool v Palace created a whopping 7 big chances with the home team conceding more. Zaha was the beneficiary of most of those (3)

FPL GW2 Review: Player Data

Let’s take a look at the Player Data where we will be focussing on the following metrics:

• Non-Penalty Expected Goal (NPxG)
• Penalty Touches
• Non-Penalty Expected Goal Involvement (NPxGI)

NON-PENALTY EXPECTED GOAL

• Arsenal didn’t disappoint their home fans as they continued to play attacking football at home. Gunners were third (after LIV & MCI) in the 21/22 season for xG generated at home and don’t be surprised if they better that stat this season considering the attacking signings they have been able to make.

• Rodrigo raised his hand up after Bamford was (yet again) subbed off due to injury with a brace and was a live wire throughout the 90 (guess the live wire part is directly proportional to scoring goals). His tally for the season is already at 3 (scored 4 last season) from 3 shots in the box. His goals have been headed, left-footed, and right-footed.

PENALTY TOUCHES

• Jesus was omnipresent in his debut game at the Emirates. 2nd highest penalty touches for Arsenal was from Martinelli at 4. This depicts how dominating a performance this was from the striker who looked hungry as ever. Is this a result of a World Cup year? If yes, will we see more trends like this in other teams?

• Salah’s 10 touches were closely followed by Diaz’s 9 out of Liverpool’s tally of 45. He had a quiet evening at Anfield with just 1 shot on target.
• Tuchel’s Chelsea had a strong home performance against the arch-rivals Tottenham. With 64% possession, they had 45 penalty touches to Spurs’ 12. Loftus Cheek who was regularly swapping positions with Reece James also had 9 touches.

Since it was a derby, how can we not give our Chelsea fan – Ishaan – a chance to talk about the pulsating game.

NON-PENALTY EXPECTED GOAL INVOLVEMENT

• Steven Gerrard must have been on cloud number 9 after both his strikers contributed to a must-win victory after their loss to Bournemouth. Ollie Watkins gave a Man of the Match performance by providing 2 assists to Ings and Buendia to take Villans to a home victory.
• With 7 penalty touches and a shot on target, he also generated an xG of 0.36 completing an all-round performance in front of the home fans.

• We find Gross yet again on this list for 2nd week in a row. Brighton mid-fielder had generated a non-penalty xGI of 0.96 vs Manchester United (GW1) and now has bettered that in his 1st home game of the season.
• With Brighton’s fixtures turning favourable from GW3 onwards, he would definitely attract a lot of attention
