FPL GW29 Saturday Fixtures Review
BRIGHTON v LIVERPOOL
- Brighton, as a home team should, was quick off the ground. The Seagulls dominated the first 10 mins with 3 shots and forced Allison to save one
- The Reds responded with full gusto and didn’t concede a shot after that in the half and attacked Brighton with 9 shots which resulted in a goal by Diaz. Recently crowned Carabao Cup champions produced an xG of 0.75 in that half
Below is a depiction of the attacking threat of both teams.
(Home team is in green)
Note 1: Goals scored in 19′ & 61′ by Liverpool
- The home team came out in the second half faster than the visitors and caught them off guard with Trossard missing a big chance with only Allison to beat (xG: 0.29)
- The reds dominated the game with 7 shots in a row. This resulted in a Bissouma handball in the pen box which Salah converted successfully
- At 62’ Salah got subbed off which looked like a left foot injury
- Brighton created a string of passes in the last 15 mins only to create just one serious chance
- Brighton have now lost their last 5 games and have scored just once. They next face Tottenham Hotspurs in 4 days’ time
BRENTFORD v BURNLEY
- A game perceived to be carrying loads of pressure for both teams as far as relegation scrap is concerned
Note 2: Goals scored in 85′ and 90+4′ by Brentford
- A sedate first half by all means saw Mbeumo in extremely attacking positions but lacking the support. A half which saw 9 shots in total producing xG of 0.31 & 0.38 for the home and away teams respectively
- 2nd half started on a more cautious note than the 1st one which just a single shot (Janelt) in the 1st 18 mins
- Burnley dominated the middle phase by creating all the attacking moves which included four shots and a hit on the crossbar by Jay Rodriguez
- A certain Danish (Eriksen) showed his class by a peach of a cross for Toney to head the ball into the back of the net and take Brentford into lead
- As Burnley tried to force an equalizer in the dying minutes, in a counter-offensive move, Toney was pulled down by Collins which resulted in a red card and a spot-kick
- Toney took it calmly and scored his 11th goal of the season. He now has back-to-back double-digit hauls which couldn’t have come timelier for his team
MANCHESTER UNITED v TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
- A game that carried ramifications more for the losing team than for the “Top 4 race”
Note 3: Goals scored in 12′ 38′ and 81′ for Man United
Note 4: Goals scored in 35′ and 72′ for Spurs
- 1st shot coming in the 9’ showed both teams wanted to take a good look at each other’s tactics and settle down
- And then Ronaldo produced a worldie strike from 30 yards (xG: 0.03) which found the top left corner perfectly. This proved as a catalyst for the game to go straight into overdrive.
- 13 shots in the next 30 odd minutes produced some attacking play from both sides resulting in a spot-kick for Kane (Telles’ handball in the box) in 35’
- Man United responded quickly with Ronaldo tapping in a goal from a cool cross by Sancho who grabbed his 3rd assist in 4 games
- Spurs – trailing the game – dominated the first half of the 2nd half with a flurry of attacking moves. Reguilon’s cross catches Maguire resulting in an own goal. (Own goals are now the 3rd highest scorer for Spurs this season)
- United took the lead for the 3rd time with a classic Ronaldo header – his 12th goal for the season and now tied with Mane and Jota
- Manchester United blank in GW 30 whereas Spurs play West Ham at home in order to get their Top 4 quest back on track
