Welcome to FPL GW8 Transfer Trends! This is a weekly series where we take a bit of time to analyze some of the major transfer trends on FPL prior to the deadline.
A relatively lower points average for FPL GW7, with some managers enjoying green arrows, and others pushed back by red arrows. Many managers were quick to activate their wildcard to catch some price rises over the international break.
This week, we can see the transfer trends show people buying players from Everton, Man City, Wolves, and Liverpool. The top 5 transfers OUT come from Man United, Chelsea, and Liverpool.
FPL Transfers Gameweek 8 Deadline – Saturday 16th October 2021 at 13:00 BST
We will take a look at the players that managers are rushing to get in their teams, as well as the players managers are booting out. Then, we will dive into three main transfer combinations that could be decent moves to make ahead of the upcoming gameweek.
RECAP GW7 TRANSFER TRENDS
Jota (2 points) to Sarr (1 points) ❌
Bamford (0 points) to Lukaku (2 points) ❌
Shaw (2 points) to Alonso (0 points) ❌
In hindsight, the transfer trends from last GW did not work out as hoped 😕 But, as always, we move.
Top Transfers In and Out Ahead of FPL GW8
Ronaldo makes it to the top of the transfers out list, with 219k managers shipping him out after 2 consecutive blanks and a tough fixture schedule coming up. Although he has been cleared fit to return, 160k managers have opted to replace Alexander-Arnold prior to Liverpool’s fixture against Watford.
United midfielders Pogba and Greenwood take the 3rd and 4th place spots, with 142k and 135k managers transferring them out respectively. Finally, Chelsea defender Alonso, after Tuchel’s rotation saw him on the bench, sees 110k managers take him out of their teams.
On the other hand, Everton winger Townsend sees 270k managers bringing him in, leading the top transfers in list. 246k managers are eager to get in on a City defender in the form of Cancelo, who faces Burnley at home this week.
Wolves striker Hwang makes a debut appearance on the top transfers in list this week, with 184k managers impressed with his 13 point haul in GW7. It’s no surprise to see Salah on the top transfers in, with 167k managers bringing him in after his brilliant 13 point haul against a tough Man City side in GW7.
Last, but not least, Doucoure makes the 5th spot on the list with 131k managers bringing him in ahead of the deadline.
The 3 transfer combinations we will be focusing on are: Ronaldo to Vardy, Greenwood to Townsend, and Shaw to Cancelo.
Top Three FPL GW8 Transfer Trends Combinations
FPL GW8 Transfer Combination 1: Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.6) to Jamie Vardy (£10.5)
Cristiano Ronaldo appears once again on the list of top transfers out, after blanks against Villa and Everton. While owners of Ronaldo who are doubtful about whether to hold or sell, holding isn’t a terrible option. However, those who are looking for a differential to punt on could set their sights on Jamie Vardy.
In fact, 15% of managers have already made the switch prior to the deadline. Vardy’s recent performances have gone under the radar due to the recent sensation over the premium strikers of Ronaldo and Lukaku, as well as xG monster Antonio. However, the Leicester striker has only blanked in 2 games since GW1, with 6 goals scored and 2 double digit hauls.
Statistically, he leads all forwards for big chances (6), 3rd for shots in the box (14), and has a 75% goal involvement.
If you’re looking to chase, a punt on Vardy could be the way to go. He frees up £2.1 of extra funds for upgrades elsewhere.
Who do Leicester face in GW8?
Leicester play Man United at home in GW8. While on paper, this doesn’t seem like a favourable fixture. However, United have only kept one clean sheet so far (Shaw owners know this far too well).
While United aren’t the worst defense in the league, with 10 big chances conceded and a 3.8 non-penalty xG, Vardy could pick up a return in this seemingly tough matchup. Additionally, Raphael Varane’s recent injury during the international break could present some uncertainty in the United defense.

FPL GW8 Transfer Combination 2: Mason Greenwood (£7.6) to Andros Townsend (£5.6)
Despite his very decent start to the season, United youngster Mason Greenwood sees 19.8% of managers make the switch to Townsend. Greenwood has now blanked in three consecutive games, and sees the security of his spot threatened with the arrival of Ronaldo, the return of Martial, Sancho, and Rashford.
On the flip side, Everton’s new arrival Andros Townsend has enjoyed 3 double digit hauls in the last 4 gameweeks, consisting of 3 goals and an assist. With Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison still doubtful, Townsend has stepped up to the challenge of contributing to the Everton attack. And he has done a pretty decent job so far.
There is a lot of debate over whether to pick Doucoure, Gray, or Townsend. All three picks sit at roughly the same price range. While Doucoure is a decent pick, his general position is more defensive than Gray and Townsend.
A quick comparison between Gray and Townsend sees the following:
Visually, we can see that Townsend’s stats generally outperform Gray. Among all sub-6m midfielders, Townsend leads for most shots on target (8). Townsend is also on most set-pieces and could potentially be on penalties while the first choice strikers are still absent.
Who do Everton face in GW8?
Everton play West Ham at home in GW8. The Hammers have conceded 8 goals and only kept 1 clean sheet so far. 64% of West Ham’s chances were conceded on their left side, which is the right wing typically patrolled by Townsend.
Additionally, Everton face Watford at home and Wolves away in the subsequent gameweeks. Townsend would be a decent hold for those games too.

FPL GW8 Transfer Combination 3: Luke Shaw (£5.5) to Joao Cancelo (£6.2)
After a third consecutive blank and a recent price drop, Luke Shaw sees 10% of managers make the switch to City defender Joao Cancelo.
Contrary to popular belief about Pep’s notorious rotation, Cancelo has actually played every minute in all of City’s Premier League games. In those 7 games, he has kept 5 clean sheets and scored 2 assists, claiming the title as FPL’s current highest scoring defender in terms of points.
Statistically, he has 16 touches in the box and 10 shots (2 in the box, 8 out of the box). He also plays for Manchester City, one of the best defenses in the league, who have only conceded 3 goals and have kept 5 clean sheets, the most of all teams.
Those who have watched Cancelo play know he is constantly involved in the attack, looking for key through balls to attackers. He often sinks into the midfield, as shown in the average position graphic below:
With every City player, managers must always take into consideration the potential for injuries or rotation due to City’s hectic playing schedule. There is high risk, high reward with going with a Man City player.

Who do Man City face in FPL GW8?
Man City play Burnley at home in GW8. City have beaten Burnley exactly 5-0 in the last 3 times they played at the Etihad Stadium. The common trend is that City tend to enjoy scoring plenty of goals against Burnley, and the chances of a clean sheet for City is pretty high. Should bode well for Cancelo.
That has been 3 potential transfer combinations that FPL managers could consider prior to the Gameweek 8 deadline. Hope this blog provided a bit of insight on viable FPL moves you could take!
