FPL Expert Talk: Strategy, Tips, and Team reveals from some of the best managers ahead of the 2020/21 FPL Season

As we run close towards the start of the 2020/21 FPL season, we sat down with some of the best FPL managers to understand their strategy for the upcoming FPLseason and their tips for fellow FPL managers who are looking to finish the season with a good rank. So if you’re looking to finish in the top 100k or 10k or even target the top 1000. This quick strategy/guide will come in handy ahead of a GW1 Deadline and for the due course of the season.

1. FPL Elite (@Fpl_Elite)

Elite is an FPL veteran having played the game for 7 seasons now. 2019/20 turned out to be a great in FPL for Elite bagging 624 captain points. Elite is known for his unique style of playing FPL with a knack of differentials.

Elite had a phenomenal last season having scored a whopping 624 points from captains

Our Strategy for this season is exactly the same as last season which helped us get to 624 captain points and a rank of 25,000. We will run you through how we pick our team & captains. When we pick our captain we look at certain things which are:

  1. Injury’s the other team has
  2. Injury’s to our captain’s team
  3. Previous games they have played each other
  4. What form the player is in
  5. What form our captain’s team is in
  6. Clean sheet odds
  7. Scoring odds
  8. Bonus points
  9. How many chances it normally takes them to score
  10. Gut feeling

Now onto how FPL Elite pick their team

We always have a mixture of highly owned players and differentials. The key is to find those differentials before anyone else does. We watch every game and will analyze every player. You can get a feel if a player has played well but just been unlucky. Then normally the week after they either score or assist. Once we have done that we will look at fixtures to see if that player will do well the following week. Then if all the stats add up we put that player in our team. Good Luck for the season guys and remember we are always here to help. Here is how we line up for this season.

2. FPL Fanatix (@fplfanatix)

MJ also popularly known as FPL Fanatix is a veteran of 9 seasons in FPL with a OR 2,260 – 2017/18, and an outstanding Overall Rank of 148 last season. MJ is also one of our resident writers here at allaboutfpl.com. Here are his tips and draft for the new season that is within touching distance.

A few quick FPL tips for you all ahead of a new and challenging upcoming FPL season would be as follows:

1) Do not have just one captaincy option but also do not have more than 3. A good captaincy rotation between 2-3 good options can work wonders. 2) Minimize hits and use FTs judiciously to do a mini WC (3 transfers for a -4) wherever possible.
3) Have a strategy but be flexible and don’t be too short term or long term when it comes to your strategy formation.
4) Plan your transfers 4-5 weeks in advance but again keep flexibility here and always account for price changes and make your moves depending on whether you would be priced out of your preferred move or not.
5) Adopt a flexible formation with various price points across the squad to minimize hits and make switches easily using FTs.
6) Do your own research, formulate and back your own plan, and interact with others only so that you can learn more. Do not let others cloud your opinion or force team moves for you.
7) Last but not the least, have fun. FPL is still just a game and remember why you play it. Ultimately it is a break from your normal stress and life and a way to enjoy Football more. I am going to try and work on this a lot this season.

Here is where my current draft lies and will most likely be very close to what I put out come GW1.

3. FPL Zhou (@ZhouFPL)

Zhou has been an FPL player since 2008 and is one of the most respected managers on FPL Twitter with 5x Top 1% past 6yrs. Zhou ended the 2019/20 FPL season with an Overall Rank of 6.5k.

Zhou’s tips ahead of the new season.

1. Build the team around core players that I would like to keep for the longer term. My core players are Ryan, Salah, TAA, Kane, Ings.
2. Since we have a wealth of midfield options this season, try to identify form players early and jump on them as soon as possible. Try not to “plan” your transfers too far ahead.
3. I can see spending the bulk of the transfers on Midfield, so I pick Strikers with a proven track record & good long term fixtures, in this case: Kane & Ings.
4. The reason I go for Kane: Can easily jump to any other on-form premium strikers within 1 FT. Ings: Can easily switch to other mid to budget strikers within 1 FT.
5. Wild Card: No plans on when to use at the moment, I treat it as my “get out of jail free card”. Only using it to bail if I get many decisions wrong or to jump on multiple fixtures/form switch.
6. Preferred Formation: Always been a fan of 3-4-3, will continue to stick to that formation.
7. Bring in as many talismans as possible in your team. Currently, I have Salah/TAA, Auba, Kane, Ings, Mitrovic.
8. Try to keep as least 0.5m ITB, which my latest draft does not have, and that might change later.
9. Have faith in your premiums, they are priced like that for a reason.
10. When in doubt, do nothing. An extra FT will always be useful.
11. Personally for me: Eye test first, stats to back it up or dismiss it.
12. Starting off the season: Try to build up TV, which will be very useful for your WildCard later on.

4. FPL Strategy (@FplStrategy)

He’s one of the celebrated and highly respected FPL managers with an extraordinary track record, He’s an Elite64 Manager having achieved TOP 10k = 7 times + a 10.1k & 14k finish in his decorated FPL Career. Strategy has kept it neat and simple with his FPL tips for this season which you find below.

FPL Strategy’s Tips ahead of the new season

My key strategy is being patient and not taking to many hits when you have a bad week. It’s easy to get impulsive, so would advise against rage transfers or big hits on any week. Also try keeping the team as flexible as possible so you can change it around easily.

5. FPL Meta (@FPLmeta)

Meta is one of the most respected FPL managers on twitter and finished the 2019/20 FPL Season with an OR of 2500. Here’s his FPL tips for the new season.

One of the keys to being more consistent is to have a plan, usually for the next 5 gameweeks, with detailed reasons for every decision in that plan. It is important to write it down as this process will help you reason through your decisions. If you ever want to deviate from the original plan then go back to the reasons in your original plan and evaluate them against your new ideas.

If you can write out new reasons which make more sense than the original plan, then you can start to consider deviating from the original plan. This approach helps you to follow through on your earlier well-reasoned decisions whilst also remaining flexible to new ideas and players. This method will really help managers who make too many emotional decisions and make erratic changes every week.

If you take this approach throughout the season it is very likely you will finish in the top 50k with no problem at all.

Conor aka as FPL Prince is one of the most popular managers on FPL Twitter and is the co-host of the popular FPL Youtube Channel The FPL Fan Show. Here are some advice and FPL Tips from Conor ahead of the new season.

Be flexible and save transfers where you can! This season will be like no other so it’s important to try and save transfers where you can. If you can have two transfers in a week where a player potentially is injured or has COVID it will allow you greater flexibility in your team. Don’t be afraid to move out those heavy hitters…you may have too!
