This is an article I’ve put together, which combines some of the best FPL options from my threads on Budget (£4.5m) and Low-Priced (£5.0m-£6.5m) FPL Midfielders. I have also included some exclusive details on the players in their pre-season friendlies.
Underlying statistics aren’t necessarily that important for £4.5m MIDs, as they are mostly similar. The most important thing is the minutes. These players shouldn’t be in your FPL XI, they should be a 2nd or 3rd bench option that can come on with 2pts when required.
Ordered by starts in 19/20:
1. Anguissa FUL £4.5m
2. Stephens BHA £4.5m
3. Romeu SOU £4.5m
4. McCarthy CRY £4.5m
5. Bissouma BHA £4.5m
1. Zambo Anguissa MID FUL £4.5 Mil
Playing position: CDM / CM Appearances (starts): 36 (28) Minutes per game: 72 ⚽️ 2 goals 🅰️ 0 assists Per game: 👟 0.7 shots 🔑 0.5 KPs 🎨 0 big chances created * statistics from Villarreal in La Liga
Anguissa signed for Fulham from Marseille for a club record fee of £23m in Aug ‘18. Anguissa only started 16/38 games in the PL 18/19 due to injury, and was then loaned out to Villarreal for 19/20. Fulham played different squads in each half of their friendly v MK Dons. Anguissa didn’t feature in either.
2. Dale Stephens MID BHA £4.5 Mil
Playing position: CDM / CM Appearances (starts): 33 (28) Minutes per game: 77 ⚽️ 0 goals 🅰️ 1 assists Per game: 👟 0.4 shots 🔑 0.6 KPs 🎨 2 big chances created
Stephens (31) has been a regular starter for Brighton over the past three seasons in the PL. He even captained the team in their GW19 fixture v TOT, as Dunk was out injured. Stephens is the most owned £4.5m MID, with ~15% TSB. Stephens was subbed on for Bissouma in the 62nd min in Brighton’s friendly v Chelsea.
3. Oriol Romeu MID SOU £4.5 Mil
Playing position: CDM / CM Appearances (starts): 30 (20) Minutes per game: 62 ⚽️ 0 goals 🅰️ 0 assists Per game: 👟 0.1 shots 🔑 0.6 KPs 🎨 4 big chances created
Romeu was a regular starter for Southampton at the beginning of 19/20, starting all of their first 12 games. He then only started one game between GW 13-31. However, Romeu finished the season well, starting all of the Saints’ last 7 games. Romeu played the first 60mins of their friendly v Swansea, with what appeared to be their strongest line-up. He was influential in the Saints’ second goal, winning possession high up the pitch before Redmond scored from six years out.
4. James McCarthy MID CRY £4.5 Mil
Playing position: CDM / CM Appearances (starts): 30 (16) Minutes per game: 51 ⚽️ 0 goals 🅰️ 0 assists Per game: 👟 0.3 shots 🔑 0.5 KPs 🎨 1 big chances created
McCarthy didn’t start any of Crystal Palace’s first 7 games in 19/20. In fact, he only started one between GW 1-17. McCarthy became a regular in mid-season, starting every game between GW 20-29. He also started all of the Eagles’ last 3 games. McCarthy started Palace’s friendly v Oxford but was forced off with an injury in the 20th min.
5. Yves Bissouma MID BHA £4.5 Mil
Playing position: CM Appearances (starts): 22 (15) Minutes per game: 72 ⚽️ 1 goals 🅰️ 0 assists Per game: 👟 0.6 shots 🔑 0.2 KPs 🎨 0 big chances created
Bissouma signed for Brighton in July ‘18 from Lille for £15m. He started 17 games in his debut season, and 15 in 19/20. Bissouma started Brighton’s pre-season friendly v Chelsea and was subbed off for Stephens in the 62nd min.
Now onto the low-priced FPL midfielders, between £5.0m-£6.5m. Firstly, the West Brom’s talisman, Matheus Pereira. I haven’t ranked him in the top 5 low priced FPL midfielders as it’s so difficult to consider how he, and the Baggies, will adapt to the Premier League.

Low-priced FPL midfielders (£5.0m-£6.5m)
Matheus Pereira MID WBA £6.0m
Pereira was the most creative player in the Championship 19/20, as the top assister and big chance creator. He was directly involved in >30% of WBA’s goals, making him their stand-out attacker. However, Pereira is yet to prove his ability in the Premier League. He featured in West Brom’s second half squad in their friendly v Nottingham Forest, and forced a good save from the Forest ‘keeper.

Low-priced midfielders in FPL (£5.0m-£6.5m) In order of FPL appeal:
1. Traore WOL £6.5m
2. Bowen WHU £6.5m
3. Saint-Maximin NEW £5.5m
4. Armstrong SOU £5.5m
5. Soucek WHU £5.0m
1. Adama Traore MID WOL £6.5m
Playing position: RW Appearances (starts): 37 (27) ⚽️ 4 goals 🅰️ 9 assists Per game: 👟 0.8 shots 🔑 1.3 KPs 🎨 10 big chances created
Traore was the Wolves’ top assister in 19/20, and only Jimenez created more big chances (13). He suffered from shoulder problems last season, reportedly dislocating it 4 times. If he can stay fit for 20/21, there’s no doubt that he’ll be even more influential in the Wolves attack.

2. Jarrod Bowen MID WHU £6.5m
Price: £6.5m Playing position: RW Appearances (starts): 13 (11) ⚽️ 1 goal 🅰️ 4 assists Per game: 👟 1.1 shots 🔑 1.2 KPs 🎨 4 big chances created
Bowen’s 16G & 7A for Hull City during the first half of 19/20 earned him a move to West Ham. He turned in some promising displays for the Hammers, achieving 1G & 4A from 11 starts. Bowen’s 23 shots and 15 chances created both ranked among WHU’s top 3 players in that period.
He impressed throughout their friendly v Wycombe Wanderers, recording two goals and an assist. He also tested the Wycombe ‘keeper with a free-kick. The following are extracts from West Ham’s match report:
Moments after Bowen thumped a low drive against the post, he assisted Lanzini. Bowen scored a rebound from six yards out after Antonio’s attempt was saved. Bowen slotted home from Masuaku’s cutback.

3. Allan Saint-Maximin MID NEW £5.5m
Price: £5.5m Playing position: LW Appearances (starts): 26 (23) ⚽️ 3 goals 🅰️ 4 assists Per game: 👟 1.2 shots 🔑 1.3 KPs 🎨 8 big chances created
Saint-Maximin was Newcastle’s most creative player in 19/20. He was their top assister and big chance creator, despite missing 11 games through injury. Between GW 23-38, Saint-Maximin achieved the most goal involvements for the Magpies, with 2G & 4A.
He played in the first half of Newcastle’s friendly v Crewe. In the 6th min, Saint-Maximin burst into the box but saw his shot from a narrow-angle saved. Just before the break, he teed up Dummett, whose 25-yard drive struck the underside of the bar.

4. Stuart Armstrong MID SOU £5.5m
Price: £5.5m Playing position: RW Appearances (starts): 30 (19) ⚽️ 5 goals 🅰️ 3 assists Per game: 👟 1.2 shots 🔑 0.6 KPs 🎨 2 big chances created
Armstrong established himself as a regular for Southampton in the second half of 19/20. After starting only 3 of the first 17 GWs, he started 16 of the Saints’ final 21 matches. His five goals from that point onwards were second only to the 13 of Ings (£8.5m) for the club.
Armstrong played the first 60mins of their friendly v Swansea, with what appeared to be their strongest line-up. Recycling possession from a corner, he charged into the box only to be felled, giving Ings the chance to pick out the bottom corner from 12 yards.

5. Tomas Soucek MID WHU £5.0m
Price: £5.0m
Playing position: CDM
Appearances (starts): 13 (12)
⚽️ 3 goals 🅰️ 0 assists
Per game: 👟 1.2 shots 🔑 0.4 KPs
🎨 0 big chances created
Soucek signed for West Ham from Slavia Prague in July ‘20 for £15m. In the last 9 games of 19/20, he was 2nd for goals, shots, and shots on target for the Hammers, with only Antonio having more. Soucek has also scored in friendlies v Ipswich and v Brentford, meaning he’s in good form for the beginning of the season.
