FPL GW6 Scout Selection Based on Stats, Analysis and Matchups

Welcome to our FPL GW6 Scout Selection blog! After a disappointing GW4, where we lost out to the Official FPL Scout team by just 2 points, we are back to winning ways with a huge 59 points achieved in FPL GW5! Last weeks tactic of BATF (big at the front) payed off, with Haaland, Solanke and Watkins all scoring and returning us a combined 21 points, and while Salah’s tally of just 6 points was underwhelming, Harvey Barnes repayed the faith we put in him, hauling a massive 10 points!

With many managers playing their Wildcard chip this week, we’ve taken inspiration from WC drafts for our GW6 Scout team, whilst also taking into account stats, and analysis. Before we look at the team, let’s first take a look at the fixtures for FPL GW6.

FPL GW6 Scout Picks

FPL GW6 Scout Selection – Goalkeeper

Sels (4.5m) retains his place in the team this week, despite conceding twice, making just 1 save and returning 1 FPL point. However, as we established in last weeks scout picks article, we’re not selecting the Forest ‘keeper for saves points, but instead due to his clean sheet potential. In our FPL GW5 Scout Selection post we pointed out that Sels’s PS-xG is actually relatively close to the number of goals Forest have conceded, meaning that The Tricky Tree’s outstanding defensive record is not down to him, but down to something else…

It’s worth looking back at last weeks post if you’d like to read about Sels in more detail, but what we established was that he faces an above average number of shots from outside the box, and faces very few shots on target, thanks (in part) to his defenders putting pressure on attackers and blocking shots. In the match against Brighton for example, Sels faced just 3 shots on target, with 4 being off target and 7 of the shots the Seagulls took being blocked. Furthermore, of the 14 total shots that Fabian Hürzeler’s side took, almost 45% of them were taken from outside the box, in comparison, against Arsenal earlier this season, only about 30% of their shots were from outside the box.

nottingham forest

Clearly Nuno is setting up his team in a way which limits the amount of shots on target that the GK faces, and this is showing in the data, as Forest have the 5th best defense in the league on expected goals against, and the joint 3rd on goals conceded.

Forest face Fulham in FPL GW6, a team who are fairly mid-table in terms of chance creation and goal scoring, so Sels will fancy his chances at adding to the 2 clean sheets he has already managed in the 24/25 campaign.

FPL GW6 Scout Selection – Defenders

After a pretty poor showing from our FPL GW5 defensive picks, we’ve gone for a complete overhaul, with, for the first time this season, no defender retaining their place from last week’s team! Trent (7.1m) replaces teammate Robertson, with Gabriel (6.1m) and Konsa (4.5m) completing the 3 man backline.

Trent was unlucky to miss out on a spot in last weeks team, and only did due to budgetary constraints, but this week he’s back! Liverpool have (still) conceded the fewest expected goals in the league (4.36xGA), keeping 4 clean sheets and conceding just 1 goal! They were lucky to escape their match against Bournemouth with the Clean Sheet still in tact, conceding 1.08xGA, 2 big chances, 19 shots and 1 goal which was ruled offside. This was in large part down to Kelleher, who deputised spectacularly for Liverpool N.1 Allisson, who was ruled out through injury, making 7 saves and facing 1.53xGOT.

Looking past LFC’s exceptional (if not slightly misleading) defensive record, Trent also offers so much value in terms of his attacking output. TAA is averaging the most key passes and the highest xA/90 in the Liverpool squad (players who have played over 180 minutes), which is insane when you consider the abundance of creative players that the Reds possess. At 7.1m he is still great value, and could get both a CS and an attacking return in GW6 against Wolves, a team who have the 3rd worst xGA in the league, the joint most goals conceded, and are still winless.

TAA Stats this season(Rank among Defenders):

  • Shots- 4
  • xA- 2.0(1st)
  • Chances created- 13(1st)
  • Big Chaances created- 4(1st)

Next up we have goal scoring phenomenon Gabriel, who has scored the joint most goals for Arsenal so far this season (2), one of them coming last GW against reigning PL Champions Manchester City. Arsenal defended valiantly for over 45 minutes against City, but ultimately were unable to keep them out, conceding a goal in the 90+8 which drew the game 2-2.

Nonetheless, Arsenal are definitely a team to target, particularly for those of us on a WC this week, as their upcoming fixtures are very enticing. This week they play Leicester at home, another team who are still winless, and have scored 6 goals from 5.65xG, the second lowest in the league. Arsenal’s defense is statistically worse than it was last season, as xG suggests they should have conceded over 4 more goals than the 3 that they have. This may well come back to bite them at some point, but as mentioned Leicester’s attacking stats are not great, and with the home crowd behind them, they should be fine.

There are some doubts around Raya’s fitness going into the weekend, which is concerning as he has been integral to their excellent defensive record so far this season. As always with Arteta we’ll never know for sure until the team sheet is released, but it’s something to take into consideration.

Ezri Konsa is the final defender in our FPL GW6 Scout Selection team. The main reason we selected Konsa is because Villa play Ipswich this week, and as I have highlighted many times over the course of the past few weeks, Ipswich aren’t great at scoring goals, so backing their opponents defense is always a decent shout.

According to xGA, Villa have a better defense than Arsenal, but the difference is that Emery’s side have conceded 7 goals from 7xGA whereas Arsenal have conceded just 3 from 7xGA. It’s important to note that Villa are currently joint 2nd in the league, their players should definitely be on our radar!

FPL GW6 Scout Selection – Midfielders

fpl gw6 scout selection midfielders

All change here! Like our defense, zero of our midfielders from last week retained a place in this weeks Scout Selection team. McNeil was unlucky to miss out, but our Midfield for our FPL GW6 Scout Selection team is comprised of Semenyo (5.6m), Mbeumo (7.2m), Saka (10.0m) and Diaz (7.9m).

Luis Diaz is providing our Salah cover; he is much cheaper, allowing us to do funnel more money into the defense and attack, and actually has better stats so far this season! Diaz is averaging 0.8xG/90 and 0.32xA/90, he is the only player in the squad who is averaging more than 1xGI/90!

He’s more in form, has better stats and is cheaper than Salah; many managers will be making the switch from Salah to Diaz on thier WCs. Wolves is a good fixture from an attacking perspective, as they have one of the worst defenses in the league, and have conceded 3 goals two GWs in a row, Diaz is a must have for GW6!

saka arsenal

Next on the list is Arsenal starboy Saka, who has managed an assist in every Gameweek so far this season! The English winger has the highest xA/90 and the second highest xG/90 in the Arsenal squad, and is also the most secure for minutes, meaning that he is the obvious candidate for those of us looking for a way into the Arsenal attack. With Leicester at home this week, at least one attacker from the Gunners is necessary, and Saka is the pick of the bunch!

Our two cheaper midfield options are the FPL fan favourites Semenyo and Mbeumo, who both have favorable fixtures in GW6 (and beyond for those of us on a WC)! Mbeumo is sitting at around 0.6xGI/90, and is the focal point of the Brentford attack in the absence of Wissa. He averages 2.0 shots per 90 and 2.0 key passes per 90 and played alongside new signing Carvalho (who could also be a cheap enabler for WC managers) in a strike partnership against Spurs. His performance against Spurs demonstrated just how good an FPL asset he is, as he took 3 shots, scored once and missed 2 big chances – if he can put in that kind of a performance against Spurs, imagine what he can do against West Ham, a team who are coming off the back of conceding 5 in mid-week against Liverpool.

Semenyo was a threat all game against the Reds in GW5, taking 4 shots and missing 1 big chance – not bad against the best defense in the league! Semenyo is averaging 0.9xGI/90 for Bournemouth this season, the 2nd highest in the squad only behind summer signing Evanlison (who is yet to score or assist in the league). Semenyo was on fire at the beginning of the season, and while he didn’t get an attacking return in either GW4 or GW5, his underlying numbers have stayed the same, which suggests he’s likely to haul sooner or later! His price makes him an enticing option, along with his matchup this week against Southampton, the team who sit joint bottom of the league alongside Everton and Wolves.

FPL GW6 Scout Selection – Forwards

Our 3 man attack this week features two of our GW5 Scout picks in Haaland (15.1m) and Watkins (8.9m), alongside Everton’s Calvert-Lewin (6.0m)! Haaland needs very little explanation, he’s the best striker in the league and has scored the same amount of goals as Villa and Liverpool – more than 16 TEAMS in the Premier League, he is a no brainer for our FPL GW6 Scout Selection team, and despite competition from Watkins, Saka and Diaz, a no-brainer for the captaincy.

watkins fpl

Watkins retains his place, after 4 returns in the last 3 matches and some out-of-this-world underlying numbers! Watkins is averaging 1.13xG/90, higher than Haaland, and about the same as Leicester… He’s another easy pick for the FPL GW6 Scout Selection team, especially considering the fixture (Ipswich Away)!

Finally we have DCL. It was a tough decision to pick between DCL and McNeil this week, as both offer great value, but we went with the former for a number of reasons. Goals are worth more in FPL than assists, and DCL has the highest xG in the Everton squad, sitting at just under 0.5xG per 90, despite the tough fixture run that the Toffees have had so far this season. While McNeil of course offers so much in terms of chance creation, he offers very little in terms of goal threat (0.06xG/90), which is okay, but not ideal from an FPL perspective.

Everton’s issue this season has not been scoring goals (they’ve scored the same number of goals as Man United and Palace), but conceding goals. However, due to their position in the table many managers are overlooking their attacking players, without taking into account their attacking numbers and the upcoming fixture run. Honestly there is very little to separate McNeil and DCL this week, both are good budget picks for GW6!
