Welcome to the FPL Gameweek 5 Captaincy metrics blog. Last week was a huge success for the metrics with Haaland, who topped the metrics hauling vs Man United. This week is an interesting one for captaincy as Arsenal face Man City(H). The top FPL Gameweek 5 Captain Picks include Haaland, Salah, Watkins, Joao Pedro, and Semenyo. Let’s see who comes out on top of the captaincy metrics.
This season, we have a 3/4 returns record. Last season, the metrics finished with 686 pts(26/38 returns), the metrics had a “26/38 returns record” in the 23/24 season, 31/37 “returns record” in the 22/23 season, and “30/38 returns record” in the 21/22 season. Note: “Returns” ~ player topping the metrics getting points returns and not necessarily the highest scoring option of the week.

FPL GW5 Captaincy Metrics
FPL GW5 Captaincy poll ~ Wisdom Of the Crowd
Mo Salah tops the captaincy poll this week with 45% of the votes, all of his returns so far have come in injury time, which is a slight concern, but he did have a great game in the opening matchday of UCL with a goal and assist against Atletico Madrid.
Slot on Salah: “I prefer to see him how he was against Atletico. Newcastle, hardly ever in play with the ball, so it was tough but Atletico was a joy to watch.”
Haaland, who hauled in GW4 vs Man United and scored his 50th UCL goal midweek, is 2nd in the poll despite a tricky away game against Arsenal.
Joao Pedro is 3rd in the captaincy poll and will be up against Man United(A) in GW5. Pedro has been in fine form with 2 goals and 3 assists in the first 4GWs, and Chelsea have Palmer back in the mix and amongst the goals as well.
Fun fact: Chelsea last won a game at Old Trafford back in 2013!
The top five in the captaincy poll is completed by the in-form Semenyo, who’ll be up against Newcastle(H), and Watkins, who has yet to score this season. Owners will be expecting the Villa forward to open his scoring against newly promoted Sunderland(A).

Underlying Numbers of the FPL Gameweek 5 Captain picks
Haaland tops the table without any surprise, with 22 shots in the box, 11 big chances, and an xG of 6.62 in the last six games. Against Man United in GW4, Haaland had a whopping 1.80 xG!
Joao Pedro is 2nd with an xG of 3.25 in the last six games, he’s also had 4 big chances and 10 goal attempts in the box, which is 2nd amongst the five players. He’s also created 10 chances in the last six games, the highest amongst the five players.
Semenyo is 3rd with an xG of 3.20, he’s also had 7 big chances, which is the 2nd highest amongst the five players. 6 out of the 9 big chances Bournemouth have had this season have gone to Semenyo, which shows he’s the talisman of the team now.
Salah is only 4th with an xG of 2.33 in the last six games and has had 4 big chances & 14 goal attempts in the box over the last six games.
Watkins is only 5th with an xG of 1.32 in the last six games. He’s had only 3 big chances in the last six games and hasn’t scored this season.

Underlying numbers of candidate’s teams
Man City have registered 13.00 xG in the last six games and take up the top spot. They have had 55 shots inside the box and 18 big chances during the period.
Liverpool are 2nd in the table with an xG of 10.45. The Reds have also registered 60 goal attempts in the box and have had 15 big chances in their last six games.
Chelsea are 3rd in the table with an xG of 9.85. Slot’s team have registered 51 shots inside the box and 18 big chances in their last six games.
Bournemouth are 4th in the table with an xG of 8.77 and have had 14 big chances and 54 goal attempts in the box.
Aston Villa are last in the table with an xG of only 4.85 in their last six games, they haven’t scored a goal in the PL this season, too!

Fixture Difficulty of the candidate team in FPL GW5
In the Third Phase of the Article, we look at the Fixture Difficulty of our 5 Candidates.
We will use DraftHound’s odds for a Team scoring at least one goal in the Gameweek and the Odds of scoring more than 2.0 goals in the Gameweek as a whole.
Liverpool are top with a 85% odds of at least 1 goal in gameweek one and 40% odds of scoring 2+ goals in FPL GW3 against Everton(H).
Chelsea are 2nd with a 77% odds of at least 1 goal in the gameweek and a 25% odds of scoring 2+ goals in their third away game of the season against Man United.
Crystal Palace are 3rd and have 73% odds of at least 1 goal in the gameweek and a 20% odds of scoring 2+ goals this week against struggling West Ham United(A)
Bournemouth are 4th with a 64% odds of at least 1 goal in the gameweek and a 20% odds of scoring 2+ goals this week against Newcastle United(H).
Man City are last with a 64% odds of at least 1 goal in the gameweek and only a 13% odds of scoring 2+ goals this week against Arsenal(A).
Man City’s lower odds this week isn’t a huge surprise because Arsenal’s defence, like the past season’s, has been rock solid. The Gunners are yet to concede a big chance this season and have the lowest xGC in the league(2.62).

Projections Rank of our FPL Gameweek 5 Captain Picks
In the fourth phase of the article, I used the Anytime Returns and Projected Points tools available at Fantasy Football Hub. With the help of the Anytime Returns Tool, I have derived the Safety Rank, which helps in determining the Safest Captaincy Option of the week, while I have used the Projected Points Tool to determine the Explosion Rank, which helps in determining the Most Explosive Option of the week.
Salah is first with an anytime returns projection of 66% and a 7.6 points projection in FPL Gameweek 5 vs Everton(H)
Haaland is second and has an anytime returns projection of 59% and a 6.0 points projection vs Arsenal(A)
Watkins is also second with an anytime returns projection of 58% and a points projection of 6.4 vs Sunderland(A)
Semenyo takes the 4th spot having an anytime returns projection of 50% and a points projection of 6.0 vs Newcastle(H)
Joao Pedro takes the last spot with the Chelsea attacker having an anytime returns projection of 45% and a points projection of 5.3 against Man United(A).

Conclusion – Final Rank from our FPL Gameweek 5 Captaincy metrics
In the Fifth and Final Phase of the article, I have aggregated the Ranks derived above to pull out the Cumulative Rank Factor (CRF). According to our captaincy metrics, the candidate with the lowest cumulative rank factor is the ideal captaincy option.
Salah narrowly edges Haaland and tops the captaincy metrics with a CRF of 8, with Haaland 2nd with a CRF of 9. Joao Pedro is 3rd with a CRF of 12, Semenyo and Watkins finish last with a CRF of 15.
