With the 2025/26 pre-season well underway, it’s that time of the year again where FPL managers agonise over those 50/50 decisions.
In some cases, we’re even more spoilt for choice – like the popular £7.5m forward slot. In this article, I take a look at 5 potential options:
- Chris Wood
- Yoanne Wissa
- Jean-Philippe Mateta
- João Pedro
- Dominic Solanke*
* Solanke is currently uncertain to start the season with an injury. I have included him here as we are yet to have solid news.

£7.5m FPL Forwards Comparison and Analysis

Key Stats
All 5 players surpassed 100 points last season. Here’s the breakdown:
- Wood: 20 ⚽️, 3 🅰️, 200 pts
- Wissa: 18 ⚽️, 6 🅰️, 185 pts
- Mateta: 14 ⚽️, 2 🅰️, 150 pts
- João Pedro: 10 ⚽️, 3 🅰️, 126 pts
- Solanke: 9 ⚽️, 5 🅰️, 108 pts

Chris Wood had a brilliant season, being the biggest over-performer on xG of these options. He has the solid advantage of being on penalties for Forest, but there will be some changes to his teammates that could have an effect here. Gibbs-White has recently secured his future at Forest with a new contract after some uncertainty, but the departure of Elanga will be a knock to their creativity.

Wissa has definitely gone under the radar as an option – and his numbers last season are probably the most consistent. Brentford losing Mbeumo is definitely going to affect things, but perhaps this gives him the opportunity to step up and become Brentford’s main man.
Among these options, Mateta falls in somewhere around the middle. He pretty much matched his expected data and ticked along nicely.
João Pedro (currently selected by more than half of all FPL managers) puts up some good numbers here, but something to note is that 5/10 of his goals last season were penalties – a luxury he won’t have at Chelsea. This is definitely something to consider.
Perhaps also noteworthy is Solanke’s poor form compared to the other options – understandable considering Spurs’ season overall.

Set Piece Potential
Wood scored all 3 of Forest’s penalties last season, and is their nailed talisman.
If Wissa stays, he is likely to be Brentford’s penalty taker with Mbeumo gone.
Mateta scored 2 penalties last season, but could share these responsibilities with Eze.
As discussed previously, half of João Pedro’s goals in 2024/25 came from penalties. However, Chelsea already have Palmer as their favoured set piece taker.
Recent news of Son’s departure will boost Solanke’s appeal to FPL managers – with penalties now seemingly his.

Team Stats

Chelsea come out on top for almost attacking stats – I think starting with one of their attackers is a smart move.
Brentfors had a strong season offensively, with the duo of Wissa and Mbeumo getting more than half of their goals.
Despite having a strong league finish, Forest do fall behind on attacking numbers – quite reflective of Wood’s over-performance last season. Palace also had a big gap between their actual and expected figures.
There’s a recurring theme with Solanke and Tottenham – lagging behind on last season’s figures, but as we come to take a look at their fixtures it brings him back into contention.

Opening Fixtures

Forest have the best opening fixtures of all teams based on Hub’s Fixture analyser. Other than a tough match against Arsenal in game week four away from home, there’s definitely lots of potential for Wood to hit the ground running.
A solid fixture run for Spurs has meant a lot of noise around Solanke and Kudus in pre-season. However, at the time of writing this, Solanke has a bit of uncertainty with an injury and is yet to get any pre-season minutes.
There are some mixed fixtures for Chelsea and Brentford – though Chelsea had a much stronger attack last season.
Mateta is understandably going under the radar, considering Palace face some tough defences early on – Chelsea, Forest, Villa, and Liverpool. He has been a consistent goal scorer, but the other strikers at this price point have it a lot easier to start the season.

Wood, Mateta, Solanke and João Pedro all have very similar predicted Points to start the season. Wissa is a little lower given his lack of pre-season, loss of Mbeumo and his uncertainty at the club.
However, there is a 10 point gap between Wissa and Mateta. As we know, anything can happen in FPL, so how much you consider these predictions is down to your style.
Best £7.5m FPL Forwards- The Verdict:
For me, the best pick is between Solanke and Wood.
Tottenham may be a little bit of a risk given their form, but with the opening fixture run and some positive new additions to the side, there’s every change for them to hit the ground running. Solanke also has the injury concern & has not played ever since Tottenham’s first pre-season friendly vs Reading on July 19th. Spurs still have 1 more pre-season game- vs PSG(Super Cup final). So watchout for Solanke updates there and Frank’s press conferences if you are planning to get him.
There’s always talk around Wood being a consistent over-achiever of his expected figures, but ultimately he’s a reliable goal scorer, even when he’s having a quiet game. It’s also a good idea to target Forest’s opening fixtures.
I’m not convinced of João Pedro given his minutes risk and the loss of penalties. Palmer should be your go-to Chelsea attacker, and anyone else would be a risk in my opinion.
What lets Mateta down is his opening fixtures. When those turn, I think he becomes a great option. He has had a strong pre-season, with 4 goals and 2 assists.
Wissa is also unfortunately a bit of an uncertainty at the moment. There are talks of him potentially moving to Newcastle, and he also loses that crucial partnership with Mbeumo.
As always, how you play FPL is down to you – sometimes we agonise over numbers only for someone completely unexpected to have a breakout season; and sometimes we pick players purely off of gut feeling.
