Welcome to our FPL GW2 Scout Selection blog! Our FPL Scout Selection is off to a flying start, bagging 84 points in GW1, with only 2 players blanking (Murphy and Eze), and a big performance from our Captain choice Salah. What’s more, our team beat the Official FPL Scout team 84 – 65 points; let’s continue this great start into GW2!

As always, our Scout Picks will be based on the eye test, stats, analysis and in this case also Pre-Season. Let’s first take a look at the fixtures for FPL GW2.

FPL GW2 Scout Selection – Goalkeeper
We’re sticking with our GW1 pick between the sticks, with Henderson (£4.5m) retaining his place in the AAFPL Scout Picks team for GW2. Palace were unlucky to come away with nothing in GW1, and Henderson actually saved (pun intended) his side from further embarrassment with a very solid display in net.
Henderson stats against Brentford:
- 2 goals conceded
- 3.11 xGOT faced
- 3 saves
Henderson actually prevented a goal (according to xG) in this game, and, as predicted in last weeks Scout Picks piece, made a number of saves throughout the game to secure his FPL owners an extra point.
In terms of match-up for this week, West Ham only scored once against Villa (a penalty), and the majority of the rest of their 2.46 xG came from a Soucek chance at the death which was cleared off the line (0.8xG). Outside of these two (the penalty and the Soucek chance) they failed to create many clear cut opportunities. I still have faith in this Palace defense, especially at home, despite the departure of Anderson.
FPL GW2 Scout Selection – Defenders
Just one change from last week for our FPL GW2 Scout Selection team, with Porro (£5.5m) (who is currently flagged and 75% likely to play) making way for Gvardiol (£6.0m). Let’s start with the new man: City’s performance in GW1 only reaffirmed the importance of a City triple up in GW2 with Ipswich coming to the Ettihad. Gvardiol scored 7 FPL points in GW1, continuing his high scoring FPL form from the end of last season; he’s a no brainer for our FPL GW2 Scout Seleciton team.
Trent (£7.0) and Hall (£4.5m), like Henderson, keep their places in the team, as they both have decent fixtures, and put in good performances in FPL GW1. While Newcastle did keep a CS, Hall was unable to show off his attacking abilities due to Schar’s early red card. What’s more, Bournemouth looked pretty blunt against Forest; without Talisman Solanke they lacked presence in the box, and created only a handful of chances (4 shots on target, 3 big chances, 2 big chances missed), Newcastle will fancy their chances at another CS in GW2.
Trent, similarly, kept a clean sheet, but also demonstrated why he is priced at £7.0m, creating 3 chances, 1.0xA, and coming away with Clean Sheet points and 2 Bonus Points. TAA is a chance creation cheat code, and could have come away with a double digit haul in GW1 had Jota scored from his perfect cross early in the second half. Furthermore, as predicted in last week’s post, Liverpool seem much more solid defensively this season under their new coach (conceding only 0.45xG and 7 shots), so a CS in GW2 is definitely on the cards.

FPL GW2 Scout Selection – Midfielders
Two remain, and two have changed – Jota (£7.5m) and Eze (£7.0m) keep their places from our GW1 team, whilst Salah and Murphy make way for Foden (£9.5m) and Gordon (£7.5m). Jota, as predicted, started up front for Liverpool and scored (0.95xG, 3 shots) in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Ipswich. He will likely start again in FPL GW2, and will fancy his chances when Brentford come to Anfield on Sunday. We are unable to include Salah in this weeks team, so the inclusion of Jota should hopefully give us enough Liverpool attacking cover for their enticing home fixture this GW.
Eze was unlucky to blank in GW1, having a fantastic free kick ruled out after a foul in the build-up. He was Palace’s best player, taking 7 shots (0.41xG) and testing the ‘keeper thrice. As mentioned in the GK section, my faith in Palace remains, it would be foolish to jump ship after one mediocre result, so we’re sticking with him for the Eagle’s first home game of the season against West Ham in FPL GW2.
Now onto the new additions! It was a toss-up between Foden and KDB, but we decided on Foden as we believe him to be more of a goal threat than KDB. Foden has outperformed KDB in terms of both xG/90 and Goals per 90 in both of the last 2 seasons. The Englishman consistently averages over 0.5 goals per 90 (or a goal every other game), and his xG/90 has never (across his career) dropped below 0.3. On the other hand, KDB has only averaged more than 0.3xG/90 twice in his (much longer) career. While De Bruyne is more creative than Foden, goals are worth more in FPL, and therefore we’ve gone with the ‘Stockport Messi’ for our FPL GW2 Scout Selection team. I delved into this debate in much more detail on my personal blog, which you can read here.
ESR (£5.5m) was considered for this team, but due to his slightly underwhelming performance (and an injury to Solanke), we have not included him, and have instead decided to upgrade Murphy to Gordon.
We’re taking a slight risk here, as Gordon’s numbers weren’t great in FPL GW1, largely down to the red card that his team suffered after only a third of the game had been played. We all know Gordon’s quality – 11 goals and 16 assists last season in a Newcastle side which under-performed expectations big time. His underlying stats were great, and he is a fantastic, dynamic player to watch, which is why we’ve included him over Murphy in this week’s FPL GW2 Scout Selection team.

FPL GW2 Scout Selection – Forwards
Introducing our Captain for FPL GW2… Haaland (of course) gets the Captaincy this week with a mouth-watering fixture against Ipswich in GW2, after City reminded us of why they are title-favourites again with a fairly easy 2-0 win against Chelsea in GW1. As mentioned, a City triple-up felt necessary this GW, and Haaland, alongside Gvardiol, is another no-brainer.
Isak (£8.5) retains his place, after a muted performance in GW1, again, largely down to the early red card that his team suffered. Isak is arguably the second best striker in the league behind Haaland, and has a decent fixture against Bournemouth; hopefully this week he’ll be able to flex his attacking muscles, so long as Newcastle can keep 11 men on the field…
As much as we would have loved to include Solanke (7.5m) in this weeks Scout picks team, he is unfortunately ruled out for FPL GW2 due to an injury. While Richarlison (£7.0m) could be a good one-week-punt, we’ve instead looked elsewhere, specifically at two players we mentioned in last week’s article: Wood (£6.0m) and Muniz (£6.0m).
We’ve stuck with Wood again this time around, despite the matchup being in Muniz’ favour this week. Southampton did look decent against Newcastle, and could cause Forest some problems, but I expect Forest to punish Southampton on the break, and Chris Wood to capitalise on such opportunities. While the signing of Nketiah from Arsenal is concerning for Chris Wood owners in the long term, he should be fine in the short term.
Muniz is still a great option, but I was unconvinced by them in GW1 against Manchester United, which is ultimately why we’ve stuck with Chris Wood.
