Best Budget FPL Midfielders (£5.0 -£6.0 Million) | 24/25 Season

In any battle, the smallest elements often carry the greatest significance. Consider the humble pawn in chess—seemingly insignificant compared to the powerful queen or towering rooks. Yet, pawns are the foundation of strategy, their positioning and movement often determining the outcome of the game. Similarly, in real-world scenarios, it is the small, overlooked details that can tip the scales in favor of victory. A minor tactical maneuver or a single, well-timed decision can outmaneuver even the most formidable opponents. In the end, it’s not just the grand gestures that decide the outcome, but the accumulation of small, decisive actions that pave the way to success. Similarly in FPL, history has time and again thrown us cut price gems from midfield:

So, in today’s article, we will celebrate the seemingly innocuous budget midfielders (<£6.5m). But if past seasons are anything to go by, then please ignore them at your own risk. Let’s start.

  • Cole Palmer(2023/24) Price: £5.0m, Points: 244
  • Riyad Mahrez(2015/16) Price: £5.5m, Points: 240
  • Charlie Adam(2010/11), Price: £5.0m, Points: 192
  • Josh King(2016/17) Price: £5.5m, Points: 178
  • Anthony Gordon(2023/24), Price: £5.5m, Points: 186
  • Dele Alli(2015/16), Price: £5.0m, Points: 166
  • Miguel Almiron(2022/23) Price: £5.0m, Points: 158
  • Aaron Ramsey(2013/14), Price: £5.5m, Points: 146
  • Adam Lallana(2013/14), Price: £6.0m, Points: 178

Best Budget FPL Midfielders (£5.0 -£6.0 Million)

Forest Falcons

Anthony Elanga (£5.5m) – MID, Liverpool – 2.9% TSB

Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.5m) – MID, Liverpool – 5.4% TSB

Best Budget FPL Midfielders - Callum Hudson-Odoi

Nottingham Forest has an excellent run of fixtures in the first 10 gameweeks.

While the more popular and expensive options like Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood attract attention, there’s potential value in the cheaper, more differential duo of Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi. Both players bring valuable experience from top clubs (Manchester United and Chelsea, respectively), showcasing their undeniable talent.

In the last 7 gameweeks, among Nottingham Forest players, Hudson-Odoi ranked:

  • 1st for FPL points
  • 1st for Goals Scored
  • 2nd for Goal Involvements
  • 2nd for Shots
  • 2nd for Shots on Target
  • 2nd for Shots in the Box
  • 2nd for BPS
  • 2nd for Bonus Points

Elanga, meanwhile, posted stronger underlying stats than both Hudson-Odoi and Gibbs-White last season.

Watchout:

Elanga didn’t rank in the top 3, and Hudson-Odoi didn’t make the top 5 for points among budget midfielders last season. Could there be better value options elsewhere?

Last friendly update: Both Hudson Odoi & Elanga came off the bench. Hudson Odoi picked up an assist and Elanga scored a wonderful solo goal. Hudson Odoi has registered a goal & 3 assists in the season and Elanga has registered a goal and assist in pre-season.

Fulham Fighters

Andreas Pereira (£5.5m) – MID, Fulham – 4.3% TSB

Emile Smith Rowe (£5.5m) – MID, Fulham – 4.6% TSB

Best Budget FPL Midfielders - Smith Rowe & Pereira

Fulham has a favorable run of fixtures in the first 3-5 gameweeks.

Andreas Pereira is Fulham’s go-to man for penalties, corners, and free kicks. Among budget midfielders last season, Andreas stood out by ranking:

  • 1st for FPL points (Since Luiz and Gallagher are no longer in BPL)
  • 1st for Assists
  • 1st for Key Passes
  • 1st for Corners Taken
  • 1st for Successful Crosses
  • 2nd for Total Crosses
  • 2nd for xA
  • 2nd for xPts

It’s also worth noting that he was the highest-scoring £4.5m midfielder in the 2022/23 season.

Joining Pereira at Fulham is Emile Smith Rowe, who could be a hidden gem at the same price point.

ESR made an immediate impact by scoring just 7 minutes after coming on as a substitute against Sevilla in his debut game for Fulham. In his second game for Fulham, he picked up a goal once again & played 82 minutes.

His breakout season came in 2021/22 with Arsenal, where he made 33 league appearances, netting 10 goals and racking up 125 FPL points with a non-penalty expected goal plus expected assists (npxG + xA) per 90 of 0.38. For context, Andreas’ npxG + xA per 90 over the last two seasons, where he excelled, were 0.39 and 0.40.

Watchout

  • Last season, Fulham was in the bottom 10 for expected goals (xG) and goals scored.
  • Andreas Pereira is also linked with a move away from Fulham

Who is your FPL GW1 Captaincy Choice?

Daichi Kamada (£5.5m) – MID, Crystal Palace – 0.6% TSB

Best Budget FPL Midfielders - Kamada

If you’re looking for an exciting new replacement for Michael Olise, someone versatile enough to play both in midfield and as an attacking midfielder, Daichi Kamada should be on your radar. Kamada has proven himself to be a formidable force in the Bundesliga, racking up an impressive 39 goals and assists in just 76 appearances. This level of productivity highlights his ability to consistently contribute to his team’s attacking play.

Moreover, Kamada has already made an impact in pre-season, finding the back of the net and showing he’s ready to hit the ground running. If you’re looking to take a calculated risk and want to steer clear of more obvious choices like Eberechi Eze, Kamada could be the perfect punt. His blend of creativity, goal-scoring ability, and versatility makes him a standout option for those seeking a dynamic player who can make a difference in multiple positions.

Pre-season form: Goal and two assists (Palace pre-season friendlies summary)

Watchout

  • The loss of a player like Olise will undoubtedly affect Palace’s attacking threat. Can Kamada step up and fill that void?
  • If Eze also departs, I’d be cautious about investing in Palace assets.
  • Should Mateta advance to the Olympics finals and miss the opening games, it could have a knock-on effect on Eze’s performance.
  • Sarr, who has Premier League experience playing on the right wing for Watford, could compete for minutes with Kamada. Will they share time on the pitch, or could both secure spots in the starting XI?

Yankuba Minteh (£5.5m) – MID, Brighton – 0.8% TSB

Best Budget FPL Midfielders ~ Miteh

Minteh’s availability arose from Newcastle’s urgent need to offload players to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations. Newcastle’s loss was Brighton’s gain.

Last season, Minteh was on loan at Feyenoord, playing under the management of Arne Slot. Slot had high praise for the young winger: “He certainly doesn’t lack self-confidence. His commitment is exceptional. When we look at his stats, they’re really impressive. Minteh covered more sprint distance against Ajax in an hour than many players do over two matches. He’s incredibly fast.”

In the Eredivisie last season, Minteh boasted a npxG + xA per 90 of 0.87, an extraordinary figure for a winger. This places him in the 99th percentile among attacking midfielders and wingers, meaning only 1% perform better. For comparison, Saka had 0.65 and Salah 0.97—two of the top right-wingers, albeit in a different league. For further context, Cole Palmer posted a 0.77.

So far, Minteh has already notched 3 goals and 2 assists in four preseason games. He didn’t blank even in one of the four pre-season games. (Brighton pre-season friendlies summary)

Watchout:

  • Brighton’s tough fixtures at the start of the season.
  • He needs to adapt to both the team and the Premier League.
  • The competition for his preferred position. Simon Adingra (£5.5m) was BHA’s second-highest scorer last season and he plays in the right-wing
  • While his potential is clear, he’s still a long way from reaching his physical peak.

One more option: Buonanotte is joining Leicester on loan. He’s priced 5.0m in FPL & has picked up 3 assists in pre-season for Brighton!

Morgan Rogers (£5.0m) – MID, Aston Villa – 7.0% TSB

Best Budget FPL Midfielders ~ Morgan Rogers

Rogers cemented his spot in Emery’s starting XI towards the end of last season. Since GW31, Rogers had made 6 starts for Aston Villa (Watkins had 7 to put in context). In that time, among his Villa colleagues, Rogers was ranked: –

  • 1st for Goals Scored
  • 2nd for Goal Involvements
  • 3rd for FPL points

Aston Villa has very good fixtures in the initial few weeks.

Rogers has already scored 3 Goals & picked up two assists in the preseason so far. -> 2024/25 Pre-Season Summary of All 20 Premier League Teams

Watchout:

  • 2 of those 3 pre-season goals came against Walsall, a team that competes in EFL League Two, the fourth level of the English football league system.
  • Rogers massively exceeded his underlying stats even during the mentioned golden period (GW31 onwards)

Jacob Murphy (£5.5m) – MID, Newcastle United – 0.7% TSB

5 goals & 3 assists for Jacob Murphy in pre-season so far, No player has more goal involvements than him in pre-season. At just 5.5 Mil he might be a solid budget enabler, Newcastle are looking for a new right winger but with form on his side, Murphy could be starting the season. He did end the season strong and had 3 goals & 8 assists from 14 starts last season. Murphy was also preferred for the RW slot last season even when Barnes was available which should continue this season too.

Con: When a new attacker comes in Murphy will eventually lose his starting position.

Amad Diallo (£5.0m) – MID, Manchester United – 2.7% TSB

Best Budget FPL Midfielders ~ Amad Diallo

There was never any doubt about Amad’s potential when Manchester United signed the young talent from Atalanta in 2021. His loan spell at Sunderland during the 2022/23 season significantly boosted his development. However, the real turning point came last season. In March, Amad scored a last-minute winner in a thrilling 4-3 FA Cup quarter-final victory against Liverpool. He then netted his first Premier League goal in May, scoring United’s second in a 3-2 win over Newcastle United.

Amad has kicked off the pre-season in impressive fashion, already registering 2 goals and an assist. With Antony and Højlund sidelined by injuries, Amad might start at least the opening few games of the season.

He was unlucky to not to have a goal contribution in the community shield game but he was also subbed off before 60 minutes which highlights the xMins issue for him.

Watchout:

  • Last season, Manchester United scored the fewest goals among the top 10 clubs, so it might be wise to approach their attackers with caution early on.
  • United have struggled in pre-season, losing to Liverpool, Arsenal, and Rosenborg while scoring just 1 goal across those 3 games.
  • It could be worth checking the Community Shield lineup to confirm whether Amad secures a starting spot.

Oscar Bobb (£5.0m) – MID, Manchester City – 1.2% TSB

Oscar Bobb is another potential budget FPL midfielder to consider, the Man City winger has been in stellar form in pre-season. Pep has confirmed attackers involved in the later stages of the Euros will return late this improves the chances of Bobb starting the season. Con: He’s not a guaranteed long-term starter.

In the community shield game against Man United, he picked up an assist and was also the man of the match.

Tomáš Souček (£5.0m) – MID, West Ham – 2.4% TSB

Best Budget FPL Midfielders ~ Souceck

The Czech midfield dynamo has accumulated 477 points and 31 goal contributions over the last four seasons. For context, Chris Wood, a striker, has 413 points and 38 goal contributions in the same period.

Unlike Rogers and Amad, Souček’s playing time is more secure.

Watchout:

  • West Ham doesn’t have the most favorable opening fixtures.
  • Souček’s attacking potential is somewhat limited.
  • Given this, would it be wiser to opt for a £0.5m cheaper alternative, considering the similar output?

Other Budget FPL Midfielder Options/Ones for the watchlist:

  • Semenyo (5.5 Mil) – Solanke has left Bournemouth & Semenyo could play out of position as a forward.
  • Brereton Diaz(5.5 Mil) – He was excellent in an ordinary Sheffield United side in the 2nd half of last season, scored against Lazio in Southampton’s last friendly
  • Fabio Carvalho (5.0 Mil)- Brentford have signed Liverpool attacker Fabio Carvalho & at just 5.0 Million he could be an interesting option this season at this price point. Brentford’s have a good fixture run starting GW6.
  • Rodrigo Gomes(5.5 Mil): First choice RW for Wolves, the Portuguese teenager has 3 goals in pre-season, not an FPL option right away but definitely one to consider when Wolves fixtures improve from GW6 onwards.
  • Justin Kluivert(5.5 Mil): Took a penalty & scored in Bournemouth’s last pre-season game, and should play an important role in the post-Solanke era for Spurs.

Harry Winks (£4.5m) – MID, Leicester – 11.5% TSB

Best Budget FPL Midfielders ~ Harry Winks

Speaking of £4.5m nailed MF bench fodders, Winks stands out as the best pick in FPL this year. The English midfielder made 45 starts out of a possible 46 for his club in the Championship last season, even chipping in with 2 goals.

Alternative to Winks: Mavididi is also a great shout and could be an option when the fixture improves for Leicester.

Watch Out:

  • You can typically expect a basic 2-3 points per week, and not much more.
  • It’s always a choice between going for a £4.5m midfielder + a slightly premium defender, or vice versa. Generally, £4.5m defenders tend to offer a higher ceiling than their midfield counterparts.
