Welcome back to another captaincy metrics blog and this time it’s an interesting week in terms of captaincy with 4-5 good captaincy options to consider. Without further ado, let’s look at the top FPL Gameweek 26 Captain Picks and see who tops our captaincy metrics to emerge as our best captain choice for FPL GW26.
The metrics had a 30/38 “returns record” last season and so far has a 19/24 “returns record” this season. Do follow the man behind the metrics @AK_FPL1(Do follow him on Twitter)
Note: “Returns” ~ player topping the metrics getting points returns and not necessarily the highest scoring option of the week. Metrics total points so far: 430 points(24+10+12+34+34+18+12+46+12+4+6+26+14+10+2+26+12+10+16+34+40+20+4+4)

FPL GW26 Captaincy Metrics
FPL GW26 Captaincy poll ~ Wisdom Of the Crowd
Saka tops the metrics after a big haul in GW25, interestingly Saka himself in his FPL team captained Odegaard instead of captaining himself last week. Haaland is second in the polls this week as he plays Newcastle at home. Kane, Rashford, and Odegaard make up the remaining of the top 5.

Underlying Numbers of the FPL Gameweek 26 Captain picks
Marcus Rashford(3.20) outscores Haaland(3.03) in terms of xG and tops the individual player metrics. Haaland however has had a whopping 9 big chances in the last six games compared to Rashford’s 5 big chances which continues to show that Haaland is always getting good goal-scoring changes.
Saka and Odegaard are the all-rounders with good goal-scoring and assist potential with Saka slightly having a better goal-scoring than Odegaard whereas Odegaard has a slightly higher assist potential than Saka. Kane continues to post healthy numbers with 5 big chances and an xG of 2.51 in the last six games.

Underlying Numbers of the Candidate’s Teams
Man City dominate the numbers once again and are first for all three metrics(Shots inside the box, Big chances, and xG). Man United is second with a healthy xG of 12.11 above Arsenal who have a total xG of 10.71 in the last six games. Spurs are without surprise the last when compared to the other teams as they have been struggling to create quality chances.

Fixture Difficulty of the candidate team in FPL GW26
In the Third Phase of the Article, we look at the Fixture Difficulty of our 5 Candidates.
We will use Drafthound’s odds for a Team scoring at least One goal in the Gameweek and the Odds of Scoring more than 2.0 goals in the Gameweek as a whole.
The Bournemouth game at home means Arsenal have the perfect matchup with a whopping 90% chance of scoring at least one goal and 50% chance of scoring 2+ goals. Although Newcastle are a defensively strong side, their recent run of poor form and the home game for Man city means Haaland/Man City is second with a 86% chance of at least one goal and a 38% chance of 2+ goals.

Projections Rank of our FPL Gameweek 26 Captain Picks
In the Fourth Phase of the article, I have used the Anytime Returns and Projected Points Tools available at Fantasy Football Hub. With the help of the Anytime Returns Tool, I have derived the Safety Rank, which helps in determining the Safest Captaincy Option of the week, while I have used the Projected Points Tool to determine the Explosion Rank, which helps in determining the Most Explosive Option of the week. I have then averaged the Two Ranks to churn out the Average Rank Factor, which I have used to determine the Safest yet Explosive option.
Surprise here with Kane topping the anytime return and projected points numbers with a 67% chance of anytime returns and 7.1 projected points. Odegaard and Saka are closely 2nd and 3rd with the Arsenal captain edging out Saka by a small margin. Haaland and Rashford are second last and last for projection considering their tricky fixtures when compared to the others.

Conclusion – Final Rank from our FPL Gameweek 26 Captaincy metric analysis
In the Fifth and Final Phase of the article, I have aggregated the Ranks derived above to pull out the Cumulative Rank Factor (CRF). The Candidate having the lowest Cumulative Rank Factor is the most ideal Captaincy Option according to this metric.
This is one of the closest the metrics has ever been in the history of our captaincy metrics with no player registering a single-digit CRF. Haaland tops it with a CRF of 10, and Saka and Odegaard are joint second with a CRF of 11. Rashy is 4th with a CRF of 12 and Kane is last with a CRF of 14.
Only a CRF of 4 separates the first and last!
