Welcome to FPL GW22 Transfer Trends! This is a weekly series where we take a bit of time to analyze some of the major transfer trends on FPL prior to the deadline.
*note: the majority of this piece was written prior to the final match of DGW21 being played, being West Ham vs. Norwich.
Double GW21 is quickly followed by another consecutive double gameweek in GW22! Managers will be looking to try and target as many of the favourable doubles as possible!
This week, we can see the transfer trends show people buying players from Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal, West Ham, and Man City. The top 5 transfers OUT come from Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham, and West Ham.

FPL Transfers Gameweek 22 Deadline
Friday 14th January 2022 at 7:30 PM BST
We will take a look at the players that managers are rushing to get in their teams, as well as the players managers are booting out. Then, we will dive into three main transfer combinations that could be decent moves to make ahead of the upcoming gameweek.
RECAP of GW21 TRANSFER TRENDS
Gallagher (0 points) to Bowen (21 points) ✅
Lacazette (2 points) to Antonio (9 points) ✅
James (0 points) to Reguilon (6 points) ✅
Great returns for the GW21 transfer trends. We move onto GW22!
Top Transfers Ins and Outs Ahead of FPL GW22
Salah (111k), Mendy (219k), and Benrahma (196k) see many transfers out prior to the DGW22 deadline as they are fulfilling their international duty at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON). James (317k) and Son (292k) see transfers out due to long-term injuries.
Jota is the hottest prospect prior to the deadline with 473k managers bringing him in, eager to see him play against Brentford. Despite his injury and being a top transfer out, Son is 2nd on the list with 395k managers still bringing him in.
Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka sees 317k managers bring him in ahead of the North London Derby. Bowen’s outstanding double gameweek 21 performance, with an assist and two goals, sees 251k managers bring him in for his fixture against Leeds United. And, finally, City’s De Bruyne makes the 5th spot of the top transfers in, 244k managers opting for the City playmaker ahead of their fixture against Chelsea.
The 3 transfer combinations we will be focusing on are: Benrahma to Jota, Son to Maddison, and Broja to Kane.
Top Three FPL GW22 Transfer Trends Combinations
FPL GW22 Transfer Combination 1:
Saïd Benrahma (£5.9) to Diogo Jota (£8.3)
2.2% of managers have made the swap from Benrahma, who got an assist in West Ham’s double gameweek 21, to Liverpool attacker Diogo Jota.
And this is reasonable, despite Liverpool not having a double in Gameweek 22. Liverpool are up against a Brentford side who are defensively poor, and, with key players Mane and Salah out, Jota’s spot in the Liverpool attack should be nailed.
Excluding Salah and Mane, Jota leads among all midfielders for shots in the box (47), headed attempts (18), and big chances (19). He is 2nd for touches in the box (114) and total shots (52).
With Mane and Salah gone for AFCON, we should expect Jota to play a critical role in the attack for Liverpool.
Who do Liverpool face in GW22?
Liverpool play Brentford at home in GW22. In their last 6 away games, Brentford have conceded 6 goals, an average of 2.9 goals conceded per game. In those 6 away games, Brentford have conceded 27 total shots, 12 of them in the box, and 11 of them on target.
The absence of their key defensive personnel has left them looking shambolic at the back. Should fare well for all Liverpool attackers.
FPL GW22 Transfer Combination 2:
Heung-Min Son (£10.7) to James Maddison (£6.9)
Prior to the announcement of his injury, Son was a hot prospect heading into GW22 given Tottenham have a double gameweek. With Son’s injury, many managers have been quick to sell the premium midfielder for other picks. 29.8% of managers have opted for Leicester’s James Maddison.
Despite Leicester’s poor defensive reputation, the attack is worth targeting with double fixtures in Gameweek 22. Among all Leicester attackers (GW16-21), Maddison is first for total shots taken (9), shots on target (4), shots in the box (5), big chances (2), touches in the box (9), and big chances created (2). He has an xGI of 2.3, the highest of all Leicester attackers.
He is also on set-pieces. While there are a couple of decent picks from the Leicester attack, including Daka, Lookman, and Barnes; however, I think Maddison is arguably the safest pick as the others carry uncertainties around their security of starts.
Who do Leicester face in GW22?
Update: Maddison’s game against Burnley is postponed due to Covid cases in Burnley camp and Leicester will have only a single gameweek facing Spurs.
Leicester play Burnley away and Tottenham at home in GW22. I do think the Tottenham game at home may be tough, as Spurs have been better defensively and will be looking to bounce back from a poor run of form.
The Burnley fixture is where we will want to target Leicester attackers. In all away games, Burnley are the worst for total shots conceded (194), shots in the box conceded (131), and 2nd worst for big chances conceded (26). They’ve only kept 1 clean sheet and conceded 19 goals in all of their games played away from home.
Leicester attackers are definitely worth considering ahead of Double Gameweek 22, with Maddison being one of the best picks to consider.

FPL GW22 Transfer Combination 3:
Armando Broja (£5.3) to Harry Kane (£12.2)
With Southampton’s Broja only having a single fixture in this Double Gameweek, it could be worth looking at Spurs premium forward Harry Kane in the upcoming Double Gameweek 22.
With the absence of Son, Salah, Mane, and Vardy, there is a true scarcity of decent premium options that have doubles. Kane and Ronaldo are the only two main picks possibly worth considering. Ronaldo is not a bad pick, but Kane would present a decent differential option for managers looking to go against the rest.
With Son out, this could present a bit of uncertainty in Kane’s form. However, you could argue that it makes Kane’s role even more important as Spurs will be looking to carry on their recent emerging streak of better form.
From GWs16-21, Kane leads among all forwards for total shots (18), shots on target (8), and headed attempts (4). He is 2nd best for shots in the box (13) and 3rd best for touches in the box (30).
On penalties, nailed, and with a relatively high xGI of 4.6, he should be very involved in the Spurs attack. A decent captain option too.
Who do Spurs face in GW22?
Spurs play Arsenal at home and Leicester away in GW22. Kane has a pretty decent record against Arsenal (he loves a good North London Derby). He currently holds the record in the North London Derby as the highest goal scorer with 11 goals scored. In the last 7 meetings at home, Kane has scored in 6 of those games (7 goals scored).
Leicester remain leaky at the back, being 2nd worst for shots in the box conceded (193), and chances from set pieces conceded (23). With an xGC of 1.8, Kane should be looking to get on the end of those chances.
Two relatively decent fixtures in the Double Gameweek worth targetting. Kane is a decent captaincy shout.
That has been 3 potential transfer combinations that FPL managers could consider prior to the Gameweek 22 deadline. Hope this blog provided a bit of insight on viable FPL moves you could take!
