FPL GW9 Transfer Trends Analysis | Popular Transfer Combinations

Welcome to FPL GW9 Transfer Trends! This is a weekly series where we take a bit of time to analyze some of the major transfer trends on FPL prior to the deadline.

A popular move in GW8 was deploying the first Wildcard chip available for managers, after a full week of price fluctuations due to the international break.

This week, we can see the transfer trends show people buying players from Leicester, ChelseaEverton, and Liverpool. The top 5 transfers OUT come from Man United, Chelsea, and Liverpool.

Before going further, Do vote in this week’s FPL GW9 allaboutfpl captaincy poll. The same will be available in the captaincy analysis and metrics blog written by@AK_FPL1. The metrics has a 7/8 record this year. Last week the metric predicted Salah as the best captaincy candidate and he returned once again in GW8 with a double-digit haul. Stay tuned for the GW9 Captaincy metric to see who tops it. Link to all our FPL Gameweek 9 blogs.

The results and the captaincy metric blog will be published soon based on the votes.

RECAP GW8 TRANSFER TRENDS

Ronaldo (2 points) to Vardy (8 points) ✅

Greenwood (7 points) to Townsend (2 points) ❌

Shaw (0 points) to Cancelo (6 points) ✅

Both Vardy and Cancelo returned, with Greenwood ending up outscoring Townsend.

Ronaldo returns to the top of the transfers out list, 402k managers tired of his third consecutive blank. Alonso’s second benching gives managers the impression he has now returned to the spot of 2nd choice left wingback with Chilwell’s return, 203k managers giving him the boot.

Rudiger’s doubt sees 157k managers take him out of their teams, and Pogba’s 4th consecutive blank sees 129k frustrated managers see him out. Finally, Jota’s benching to make way for Firmino’s return results in 128k managers transferring him out.

On the flip side, Vardy’s goal in Leicester’s thriller against United sees him take the top spot of the transfers in list, with 293k managers eager to bring him in. Chilwell’s amazing form in the last two games makes it not surprising that 172k managers interested in the Chelsea wingback.

Despite his blank against West Ham, 139k managers are still putting faith in Townsend with the hopes that Everton’s good run of fixtures will fare well for him. 136k managers bring Salah in, especially after his stellar performance against Watford, which is his 5th double digit haul this season!

Finally, Chelsea skipper Azpilicueta sees 128k managers bringing him into their teams ahead of Chelsea’s matchup against Norwich at Stamford Bridge.

The 3 transfer combinations we will be focusing on are: Ronaldo to Lukaku, Jota to Mbeumo, and Alonso to Chilwell.

Top Three FPL GW9 Transfer Trends Combinations

FPL GW9 Transfer Combination 1: Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.6) to Romelu Lukaku (£11.7)

Note: The blog was written prior to Lukaku’s injury vs Malmo in the champions league game. Further news is expected on Lukaku in due course.

Ronaldo’s 3rd consecutive blank in a row against Leicester sees almost 65.5% of managers make the easy swap to Vardy, who, as predicted from the last edition of Transfer Trends, scored a goal against United. While going for Vardy would be a decent pick too, why not join the 19.1% of managers going for Romelu Lukaku?

Remember that he is still a poacher in the box – 16 shots in the box, which is 3rd best among all forwards.

The Belgian striker has remained relatively quiet, blanking four games in a row after his haul against Aston Villa. Statistically, Vardy would be a better pick. However, if you’re looking to chase and want to back fixture over form, Lukaku could be your pick.

The key thing here is: managers will have a variety of approaches to how they deal with their premium forward spot. Some may keep faith in Ronaldo, some will jump onto Vardy, or some could go differential, like Kane or Lukaku. Lukaku could be a great differential, especially playing against Norwich and having decent fixtures beyond that.

Who do Chelsea face in GW9?

Chelsea play Norwich at home in GW9. Norwich, sitting at 20th on the table, are still looking for their first win this season. They are one of the worst defences in the league, with 16 goals conceded (2nd worst), 21 big chances conceded (2nd worst), and 84 shots conceded in the box (3rd worst).

Could this be the fixture Lukaku regains his confidence? I personally would not be surprised if he bags a brace. If there’s any game to take a punt on Lukaku, it would be against Norwich at home.

Norwich have conceded 16 goals, 2nd worst among all teams.

FPL GW9 Transfer Combination 2: Diogo Jota (£7.5) to Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5)

Firmino’s return against Watford saw him bag a massive 20 point haul from a hattrick and an assist. This also saw Diogo Jota get dropped, with no minutes played. Firmino’s availability should firmly present rotation risk to Jota’s security of starts. Managers have been quick to drop him over the course of the last few gameweeks, with 34% making the downgrade to Bryan Mbeumo.

The Brentford attacker, although classified as a budget midfielder, is one of the exciting out-of-position (OOP) assets to choose from this season. He typically plays up top alongside Ivan Toney on the right flank.

Statistically, he leads among budget midfielders (5.5 range) for most shots taken (19), shots in the box (13), and big chances (5). He is also first for most touches in the box (37).

He is a great budget enabler in midfield who packs the potential to haul too.

Who do Brentford face in GW9?

Brentford play Leicester at home in GW9. Leicester, while they have been pretty decent in attack, have also shown flaws defensively. They are 2nd worst for total shots conceded (132) and shots conceded in the box (86). They have only kept 1 clean sheet, and 51% of their chances were conceded on the left (right flank is where Mbeumo plays).

Mbeumo should be able to get involved in the attack of this game. On top of that, the fixture run in the gameweeks prior (Burnley, Norwich, Newcastle) will be great opportunities for Mbeumo.

Leicester are the 2nd worst for total shots conceded, with 132 conceded.

FPL GW9 Transfer Combination 3: Marcos Alonso (£5.9) to Ben Chilwell (£5.7)

FPL GW9 Transfer Combination 3: Marcos Alonso (£5.9) to Ben Chilwell (£5.7)
Chelsea's fixtures from FPL GW9-15

Marcos Alonso’s 2nd benching means it is no surprise managers are eager to make the switch to Ben Chilwell, who has excelled in the last two games he has returned. 46.2% of managers have the switch already prior to the deadline.

Alonso isn’t a terrible player – as we saw in our previous analyses, he gets heavily involved in the attack as a wingback. However, he is dropped to 2nd choice for Chilwell, who, in the last two games which he has started, he has scored 2 goals and kept one clean sheet, 23 points alone from the last two fixtures!

In the two games he played against Southampton and Brentford, he has had a total of 5 shots, all 5 of which were in the box! He has had 9 touches in the box, and he is on set-pieces too.

With every Chelsea player, managers must always take into consideration the potential for injuries or rotation due to Thomas Tuchel’s rotational habits. While I personally think Chilwell should be relatively nailed compared to Alonso, we can never be 100% sure. Be willing to accept the risk of rotation should you opt for Chilwell.

Who do Chelsea face in FPL GW9?

Chelsea play Norwich at home in GW9. As mentioned earlier, Norwich, sitting at 20th on the table, are one of the worst defences in the league. On the flip side, they have scored 2 goals this season so far, the least among all teams. They have the least shots in the box, shots on target, and have an xG of 7.4 (worst for all teams).

Given their current form, I would be surprised if Chelsea concede to Norwich, provided that Chelsea, too, are one of the better defenses in the league, with only 3 goals conceded and keeping 5 clean sheets so far. Should fare well for Chilwell.

Norwich have only scored two goals so far this season.
