The first double Gameweek of the season is upon us as in FPL GW19 as many as 11 teams have two fixtures each. This gives FPL managers an opportunity to climb up the ladder. Differentials could be the order of the day for this GW to boost your league positions. In this blog, we look at the top FPL GW19 Differential picks to consider ahead of the deadline.
Note: All player ownership & price are from the data at the time of writing, subject to change as we move close to the FPL GW19 deadline
FPL GW19 Differential picks
Ilkay Gundogan vs Crystal Palace(H), Aston Villa(H), £5.5 TSB: 2.4%
Manchester City arguably have the best set of fixtures in FPL GW19 among those that have a double GW. Ilkay Gundogan is the stand out option from Manchester City, even ahead of KDB dare we suggest. The German has excelled in this new advanced role in the past few weeks. He has scored 3 goals in his last 5 matches and has got 3 bonus points in two of those games. Indeed, no other Manchester City player has scored more points in the last 5 matches than Gundogan(36).
Numbers to back-up Gundogan for FPL GW19:
Gundogan has had 9 shots in the box in the last 5 matches, which is more than any of his compatriots. He has had 4 big chances in that time, only KDB has had more(5) but the Belgian has missed 5 of his last 6 big chances in the league. Above all it is the German’s price that stands out, effectively we are going to get almost the same output as KDB at less than half the price.
Pro Tip: It is almost essential to have three Man City players this GW, so Gundogan can be the third pick on top of KDB and one of the defenders.
Roberto Firmino vs Manchester United(H),Burnley(H), £9.3 TSB: 4.4%
It is not often that Roberto Firmino becomes a good pick in FPL. But in FPL GW19 he could be the perfect third asset to pick from Liverpool. All the stats also point in the direction of Firmino among the front three.
It is difficult to find a way to have both Mane and Salah in the team given all the other options available, so Firmino is definitely a good third pick from Liverpool, especially if you are Free Hitting in FPL GW19.
Hakim Ziyech vs Fulham(A),Leicester(A) £8.1 TSB: 2.5%
Hakim Ziyech’s return from injury couldn’t have come at a better time for Chelsea as they are on a wretched run of form. Chelsea ‘s results with and without Ziyech in the side are of stark contrast. Chelsea have only won 3 of the 11 matches that the Moroccan has missed, while they have picked up three points in 4 out of the 6 games that he has started.
The Moroccan magician returned to full fitness in the FA cup and produced a trademark special assist, albeit against a lower division side in Morecambe. Chelsea’s first opponent Fulham have given away 11 big chances in the last 4 matches, only Leeds, West Brom and Crystal Palace have given away more.
As for the second opponent Leicester, they have the sixth worst home record in the league this season. The Foxes have picked up just 10 points from 8 games at home. In contrast, they have picked up 22 points in 9 away games. With two potentially good fixtures on paper, Chelsea have the chance to turn their form around and Hakim Ziyech is by far the best option to choose from the Blues’ attack.
Harry Maguire vs Liverpool(A),Fulham(A) £5.4 TSB: 4.2%
Maguire sounds pretty much sounds like a controversial pick, but considering the problems Liverpool have at the back, he may turn out to be an astute pick for FPL GW19. To put things in perspective, last two goals that Liverpool have conceded have been from set pieces. This is no coincidence as all of Gomez, VVD and crucially Matip have all been injured in that time. Joel Matip is still injured and as a result of which Liverpool are still vulnerable from set plays.
The England CB is Manchester United’s biggest threat from dead ball situations and he was unfortunate to have a goal wrongly ruled out for a foul at Turf Moor on Tuesday.
The Red Devils then take on Fulham in their second game, a team that has scored just 14 goals all season, the third worst tally in the league. At the very least Maguire is all set to get 6 points, but we think he is in for a big haul this week.
Sam Johnstone vs Wolves(A),WestHam(A) £4.5 TSB: 2.6%
I don’t think we have ever put a goalkeeper as a differential pick, but such is the beauty of a double Gameweek where a goalkeeper becomes one of the most important assets in FPL. Sam Johnstone, we believe, will be the top scoring goalkeeper in FPL GW19. Not least because he takes on two teams which have been struggling in front of goal in the last few matches. Wolves have scored 8 goals in last 6 matches and West Ham have scored just 4 goals in the last 5 matches.
Both Wolves and West Ham have struggled for goals all season. Nuno’s side have scored a paltry 19 goals all season, only the bottom 6 have scored fewer.
Sam Johnstone has been the best player for WestBrom this season. He has made 74 saves, which is more than any other keeper. Furthermore, the Baggies have been far better on the road than at home. In fact in their last two away matches, West Brom have picked up a point at Anfield and the Etihad, with Johnstone coming up with critical saves towards the end in both the matches.
Pro Tip: To all those planning a Bench Boost in FPL GW19, Sam Johnstone is definitely a must have as one of your keepers.
Other Differential picks to consider ahead of FPL DGW19:
- Phil Foden has been in very good form of late, scoring in both of his last two matches. He now is the top scorer for City in all competitions with 8 goals. But then there is just a small concern of the ‘Pep Roulette’.
- Michail Antonio if fully fit is arguably the stand-out option upfront, with fixtures against Burnley and WestBrom. However, given his past injury problems, it is highly unlikely that the Hammer will start both games.
- Olivier Giroud has an excellent goal scoring record vs both Fulham and Leicester, he has 2 goals and 1 assist in 2 matches against the Foxes while scoring 3 times in 5 against the Cottagers. If only we knew whether or not Frank Lampard will start him!
- Harvey Barnes has scored 2 goals in his last three matches, and 3 of his 5 goals have come at the KP stadium. Add to that, he did score in the reverse fixture against Chelsea last season too.
