FPL GW20 Tips & Preview

Is Chris Wood Essential?

To answer the question before following up with the data, no I don’t think Chris Wood is essential in your FPL lineup.

He has proved to be great value in the first half of the season with 11 goals and 1 assist in 19 gameweeks. For his price, you can’t ask for much more so far. But the first half of the season is now in the past and we must look towards the next set of fixtures and maximize points for upcoming gameweeks.

Wood has had his fair share of luck. Some defensive errors and deflections have seen him add to his tally in some of the easier possible routes. He has also scored 11 goals from only 6.9 expected goals which if you look at his career as a whole, he has never shown finishing at such a level to say this is sustainable. He also averages only 2 shots per match and 18 shots on target for the season.

At 33 years old and with Taiwo Awoniyi coming off the bench, Wood will see regular 75 – 80 minute substitutions as well as a bench appearance here and there.

I’m not saying that Wood is not a good pick, i’m only saying that he shouldn’t be considered must-have or essential.

Trust Nicolas Jackson

Nic Jackson still wears the badge of “wasteful finisher” after his 23/24 season. He started off the season with very poor finishing and making far too many errors which were obvious to FPL managers and Chelsea fans alike. However he finished the season on 14 goals and 6 assists from 31 starts which is still a great return for a young striker debuting in the Premier League.

The second half of Jackson’s season saw his form turn around and help Chelsea to steer themselves into the European positions on the table at season’s end.

Jackson then started this season in form, posting 9 goals and 4 assists from 17 starts which matches up closely with his 9.1 xG and 1.9 xA

Isak1.04
Jackson0.85
Pedro0.85
Watkins0.84
Cunha0.81
Haaland0.79

Many managers who currently own Jackson are frustrated due to his benching in Chelsea’s 5-1 win against Southampton and recent 3 blanks. He came off the bench in Gameweek 19 due to the Christmas schedule and prior to that Chelsea struggled against Everton and Fulham who are two of the better defences in the Premier League currently.

Jackson is averaging 2.7 shots per match as well as a key pass. His underlying data has been great all season and his next nine fixtures are quite good for attacking purposes. I would highly consider keeping Jackson or transferring him in.

Trent Alexander-Arnold Thoughts

Trent has been a big topic this week after his 15 point haul against West Ham. Fortunately for owners, this was off the back of a long range shot that took a deflection which wrong-footed the goalkeeper.

At a price of £7.2m, Trent was on a lean streak of returns. He was only averaging approximately 4 points per start and his underlying numbers were not great in recent weeks. Almost half of his underlying expected assists data has come from the Ipswich, Tottenham & Leicester fixtures which would always be the best for him.

His upcoming fixtures (other than Manchester United) are against teams in goalscoring form including Gameweek 21 & 22 both being away fixtures. Liverpool do have one of the better defensive units this season but away fixtures against in form teams are always going to be tougher to keep a clean sheet.

Upcoming fixtures for Liverpool

His data as well as Liverpool’s data across the season is still good, but he is not essential and is not worth taking hits or ripping up your team for. This week is a great fixture for him against Manchester United but the following run of fixtures are a bit tougher.

FPL GW20 Key Fixture Analysis

Liverpool v Manchester United:

Liverpool host Manchester United at Anfield. Liverpool are at the top of their form while Manchester United are at the opposite end of the spectrum. Manchester United have struggled to finish goalscoring opportunities while also displaying key defensive issues.

United welcome back Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes this week after suspension and we will potentially see Mainoo return to the starting lineup. Expect Liverpool to dominate with Salah involved in the goals. Alexander-Arnold will make the most of United’s defensive miscommunications with some pin-point crosses.

Tottenham v Newcastle:

As has been mentioned before regarding Tottenham fixtures, especially home fixtures, expect multiple goals from both teams. This is a fixture to bench your defensive assets and start all of your attacking assets. Expect both teams to be explosive on the counter and look to secure a key three points that will send either team in the right direction.

Newcastle Attackers over the last 6 matches:

  • Isak- 8 Goals, 2 Assists, 6.9 xGI
  • Murphy- 3 Goals, 4 Assists, 3.2 xGI
  • Gordon- 2 Goals, 3 Assists, 3.4 xGI

They are up against TOT(A) in GW20- who are ranked 19th for xGC, 18th for Big Chances Conceded and 19th for Goals conceded over the last 6 Gameweeks.
