Every FPL season, there come certain players who have an appeal to them which pulls a lot of people towards these players. However, not all of them work out and those managers who own these players end up seeing a fall in their FPL ranks. But it is not impossible to avoid these players in your FPL team, you have to watch out for certain things. In this article, I will make your job easier for you by listing a number of players I think you should avoid having in your FPL team this season.

FPL Players to Avoid Ahead of GW1 – 2024/25 Season
Note: All the players mentioned in this article as “Players to avoid for GW1” are the author’s opinion based on stats and analysis. Have a read and decide for yourselves.
Jean Phillipe Mateta (TSB: 8.0%)
Mateta had a great finish to last season with 10 goals, 2 assists from the last 9 games of the season but he’s involved with France in the Olympics. If France get to the Final on Thursday 8th August, Mateta will still be playing a week before the season starts & will likely miss the beginning of the season. So he is a player to avoid for FPL GW1.
Phil Foden(TSB: 30.2%)/ KDB(TSB: 6.9%):
Pep has already confirmed that Foden along with KDB, Walker, and Rodri will miss the Community shield game and has mentioned that they’ll be slowly reintroduced. There’s a high chance that they both starts from the bench in GW1
Guardiola on players returning from international duty [incl. Foden, KDB, Walker, Rodri]: “We will be late. Not against United [they won’t feature in the Community Shield]. “Against Chelsea, against Ipswich [they will be reintroduced]…”

Mainoo(TSB: 5.5%)/Other CDMs:
Players like Rice, Mainoo, and Rodri are all excellent players and are very important for their team. But unlike Euro Fantasy we don’t get ball recovery points so avoid them right now especially more attacking players available in that particular price range.
For eg- Rice and Rodri are priced 6.5 million but for that price you can get to the likes of Nkunku, Gibbs-White, Bailey, etc. In Mainoo’s rice range or cheaper- You can get to the likes of Elanga, Hudson Odoi, Smith Rowe, Minteh, Rogers, etc who play higher up on the pitch.

Matt Turner(TSB: 24%)
Matt Turner is surprisingly the most owned Goal Keeper in the game at the moment. But with Forest signing Miguel and Sels already in the picture, Turner is likely to be third choice. As soon as FPL managers realise and start selling him, He is likely to drop in price as well affecting the team value.
Trippier(TSB: 14.4%)
Trippier has not travelled with the Newcastle team for their Japan tour with an extended break following Euros. It’s not clear that if he’s ready to start the season with transfers rumors as well linking him to many clubs outside Premier League.

Hojlund(TSB: 5.8%)
Hojlund is sidelined for 6 weeks with a hamstring injury and is an easy avoid.
Jarrod Bowen(TSB: 7.3%)
Jarod Bowen has been a consistent performer in FPL over the years. But with tough fixtures to begin the season, Bowen can be an avoid with much more value players available in that price range(Gordon, Eze) with better fixtures. Looking at the West ham fixtures, Bowen can surely be an exciting option from GW6 and should be on everyone’s watchlist.

Pedro Porro (TSB: 25.6%)
This is a tricky one, although Porro offers great attacking potential. Spurs don’t keep many clean sheets. Clean sheet potential should always be the 1st parameter in picking a defender & this time he’s expensive too. Between GW3-GW6 they play Arsenal, Man United & Newcastle too and it is difficult to bench a 5.5 million Defender. He might be a short term option for GW1 and GW2 vs Leicester(A) and Everton(H). But it might not be a great move to book transfers very early in the season so we have listed him as an avoid.

Other Potential FPL Players to Avoid for GW1 in 2024/25 FPL Season:
These are the other potential players to avoid in GW1 for the 2024/25 season. They are not direct avoids and pre-season should help us confirming the decisions.
- Burn: Could be rotated/benched if there is a drop in performance with good replacements like Kelly(CB) and Hall(LB) around. Livramento(4.5) might be a better option if Trippier leaves.
- Martinelli: Not guaranteed to start with Trossard in the mix as well. Even if he starts minutes might not be great.
- Gakpo/Darwin/Jota: We are not yet sure who the first choice striker for Liverpool is. Only two of those three are likely to start and minutes will be shared. However with the excellent initial fixtures one of these 3 might be a good short term pick if we get clarity before GW1 on who is likely to start.
- Branthwaite: Mykolenko offers a great route into Everton at 0.5 cheaper. It might not be worth paying the extra 0.5 million for Branthwaite as their attack stats look similar.
Branthwaite vs Mykolenko(Last Season per 90 Stats):
- Shots- 0.40 vs 0.95
- xGI- 0.09 vs 0.09
- FPL Points- 3.58 vs 3.68
