Welcome back, everyone! I hope your planning is in full swing. How many times have you tinkered with your team so far? If the answer is less than 10, are you even playing FPL? Jokes aside, keep an eye on those pre-season fixtures. Many players are getting injured, and hidden gems are slowly but surely revealing themselves. The Premier League is back, and it’s only going to get bigger and better as we approach August 17th. In the last article, we covered the premium midfielders in detail. Today, we’ll delve into the next tier of midfielders—the mid-priced FPL midfielders (£6.5m-£7.5m). Last season, two of the top three scoring midfielders came from this price range. So, without further ado, let’s dive right in.

Best Mid-Priced FPL Midfielders (£6.5 -£7.5 Million)
Anthony Gordon (£7.5m) – MID, Newcastle – 35.4% TSB
Last season, Newcastle scored 68 goals—the fourth-highest in the Premier League. A significant contribution to their success came from Anthony Gordon. At home, among midfielders, Gordon was ranked
- 1st for Goal Involvements
- 1st for Assists
- 2nd for points
In GW1, Gordon faces a promoted team (Southampton) at home. Even beyond GW1, Newcastle has extremely kind fixtures until GW4
Hence Gordon should be seriously considered for your GW1 squad.
Watchout:
- Gordon might be on the move, with Liverpool reportedly interested in the talented Englishman.
- Gordon massively exceeded his underlying stats last season—especially his expected assists (xA) numbers. Can he replicate those magic assists this year?
Stats 23/24 | xG | G | xGI | GI | xA | A | xPts | Pts |
Anthony Gordon | 10.03 | 11 | 15.4 | 27 | 5.4 | 16 | 143.45 | 183 |
- PS – In case Gordon leaves, his teammate Harvey Barnes (£6.5m) becomes an immensely exciting prospect.
Pre-season update:
Gordon made his 1st appearance in pre-season and scored a goal. He played the first half in his return after the Euros.
Luis Díaz (£7.5m) – MID, Liverpool – 6.5% TSB
Luis Díaz was Liverpool’s second-highest FPL scorer last season, making 37 appearances out of 38 matches, starting 32 of them. His spot in the starting lineup and consistent minutes seem assured.
Last season, among mid-priced midfielders, Diaz was ranked
- 1st for xG
- 1st for xPts
- 2nd for xGI
- 2nd for Shots
- 2nd for Shots in the Box
- 3rd for Shots on Target
- 3rd for Big Chances
Athletic reporter Andy Jones, who analyzed how Feyenoord played under Arne Slot, said: “He (Slot) wants a flexible front three. He likes a ball-carrying left-winger who can come inside, and you look at Luis Díaz and that’s exactly what he is, really.” This suggests Díaz’s output could be even higher this season.
Liverpool possibly has the best fixtures between GW1 and GW6.
Watchout:
- As mentioned in our previous article, it remains to be seen how quickly Arne Slot adapts to his new role with a new club, in a new league, and in a new country.
- Last season, among midfielders priced at £7.5m or below, Díaz was:
- 9th for total points scored
- 23rd for points per match
This suggests there might be better value in other similarly priced midfielders.
Friendlies update: Diaz picked up two goals in Liverpool’s friendly against Sevilla
Essential Reading: Check out our Liverpool preview blog by our Liverpool fan & writer -> Dylan
Diogo Jota (£7.5m) – MID, Liverpool – 4.8% TSB
Diogo Jota seems to have sealed the striker spot for the beginning of the season, he played up top in Liverpool’s friendly vs Sevilla in what was a strong Liverpool 11.
Jota picked up a goal(stunning volley -> goal video) and an assist. At the time of writing, he has an ownership of less than 5% & with those great fixtures, he seems to be a good differential option at the start of the season.
Jota is an excellent finisher, his pts/90 of 8.60 is the highest amongst Liverpool players last season(1.11 more than Salah. In 21 games last season(14 starts) he scored 10 goals and picked 7 assists.
Eberechi Eze (£7.0m) – MID, Crystal Palace – 32.8% TSB
Under Glasner, Eberechi Eze has thrived, recording 6 goals and 3 assists in just 12 games. Eze returned from injury in Gameweek 28 but took a match or so to regain his form. In the last 10 Gameweeks, after fully settling in post-injury, among mid-priced midfielders, Eze was ranked:
- 1st for points
- 1st for goals
- 1st for Shots on Target
- 2nd for xGI
- 2nd for Goal Involvements
- 2nd for Shots
- 2nd for xG
- 3rd for xA
- 3rd for xPts
- 3rd for Bonus
Crystal Palace have good fixtures to start the season.
Eze is Palace’s main man for penalties, free kicks, and corners, so he should be high on your consideration list for GW1.
Watchout:
- Losing a player of Olise’s caliber is bound to impact Palace’s attacking potential. Can Kamada and/or Sarr fill the void?
- Eze has not played in pre-season so far.
- Eze has been linked with a move to Spurs.
- If France reaches the Olympics Final on August 8th, Mateta will still be playing a week before the season starts, potentially missing the beginning of the season. This could impact Eze’s output.
Friendlies update: Eze made a return to Palace playing 11 along with Guehi, and Munoz in their last friendly against Nantes.

Christopher Nkunku (£6.5m) – MID, Chelsea – 17.0% TSB
Before moving to England, Nkunku had 53 goals and assists combined in his last two Bundesliga seasons. Enzo Maresca is already highly impressed with Nkunku, stating, “Nkunku can play everywhere. He’s doing very well already with understanding the way we want to play.” Nkunku is also second in the pecking order for penalty-takers at Chelsea. With Palmer not playing any pre-season minutes, it will be interesting to keep an eye on his role.
Chelsea has favorable fixtures following the challenging GW1.
Nkunku has already scored 3 goals in the pre-season and looks very sharp.
Enzo Maresca on Nkunku’s great impact in pre-season: “I knew Nkunku before I joined… I love him!”. “He can play in the pocket, as a nine and winger. He’s a very good fit for this system”.
Watchout:
- How Maresca recreates the success he had with Leicester in the more challenging conditions under Boehly will be crucial in determining the performance of Chelsea assets this season.
- Fitness is a concern for Nkunku, given he made just 11 league appearances last season. If he stays fit, he could be one of the bargains of the season.
Morgan Gibbs-White (£6.5m) – MID, Nott’m Forest – 7.2% TSB
Finish whatever you’re doing, take a deep breath and just look at this fixture run
- If not already, very soon we will see many FPL managers doubling or even tripling up on Nottingham Forest’s offensive assets. Gibbs-White was NFO’s leading scorer last season and is a nailed starter, making 37 appearances for NFO. He takes penalties, free kicks, and corners.
- Last season, among mid-priced midfielders, MGW was ranked:
- 1st for Big Chances Created
- 2nd for Assists
- 2nd for Key Passes
MGW certainly needs serious consideration for your opening GW team
Watchout:
- There might be better value in other Forest picks such as Anthony Elanga (£5.5m), Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.5m), or even Chris Wood (£6.0m).
- In pre-season, although Wood and CHO have scored, Gibbs-White has not found the net yet. Forest has also failed to score in their last two matches against stronger teams like Elche and Villarreal. Gibbs White wasn’t involved in any of the four goals Forest scored in their last friendly against Olympiacos as well.

Leon Bailey (£6.5m) – MID, Aston Villa – 4.6% TSB
Aston Villa has a highly favorable run of fixtures to start the season.
Other than the obvious attacking option in Watkins, a more budget-friendly alternative could be the Jamaican star Bailey. He was the second-highest point scorer for Aston Villa in FPL last season. Although he started only 22 games, Diaby’s departure from the club should secure more minutes for Bailey.
Last season, among mid-priced midfielders, Bailey had the third-highest Goal Involvements.
Watchout:
- Bailey exceeded his underlying stats last season.
Stats 23/24 | xG | G | xGI | GI | xA | A | xPts | Pts |
Leon Bailey | 6.29 | 10 | 13.5 | 21 | 7.17 | 11 | 124.79 | 148 |
- If Morgan Rogers (£5.0m) secures a starting spot, it might be worth considering him over Bailey. Trivia: Rogers has already scored 3 goals and picked up two assists in pre-season. Bailey has registered a goal & an assist in pre-season. (Aston Villa pre-season update)

Dominik Szoboszlai (£6.5m) – MID, Liverpool – 2.7% TSB
Szoboszlai stands out as a top pick among £6.5m midfielders, with under 5% ownership making him a great differential.
The Hungarian is expected to play as a number 10. Last season, Slot primarily used Calvin Stengs in the number 10 role, and he was crucial to the team, contributing 8 goals and 17 assists across all competitions.
To understand more, let’s look at the heatmaps. If Szoboszlai does play as No 10, he will take up more central attacking positions in the box.
Liverpool arguably has the most favorable fixtures between GW1 and GW6.
With those fixtures and his role in set pieces, Szoboszlai could be a significant bargain this season.
Watchout
- If Szoboszlai continues in his deeper role under Slot, his appeal might diminish. Keep an eye on pre-season friendlies, especially those closer to August 17th.
- Slot has big shoes to fill. Moving to a new country, a new club, and a new league presents significant challenges. Replacing a legendary manager is notoriously difficult; Manchester United has struggled since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, and Arsenal has yet to win the league since Arsène Wenger stepped down.

- Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Rodri will miss the Community Shield and will be gradually reintroduced, potentially impacting his minutes

Pros:
- Last season, among mid-priced midfielders, Garnacho was ranked:
- 1st for Shots
- 1st for Shots in the Box
Cons:
- Manchester United scored the fewest goals among the Top 10 clubs last season, so it might be wise to avoid their attackers initially.
- Amad Diallo (£5.0m) has had an impressive pre-season and could start at right wing over Garnacho.
