After a long three-month break, the wait is finally over—Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is back and ready to captivate managers once again. This offseason has been anything but uneventful, with the European and Latin American champions crowned and high-profile players like Kylian Mbappe making moves to new clubs. The English Premier League has also seen a wave of new managerial appointments, setting the stage for an exciting new season. As we eagerly anticipate the start of another thrilling campaign, now is the perfect time to dive into FPL planning. In this article, we will focus on one of the most crucial positions in your squad: midfielders. We’ve classified them into three groups to help you make informed decisions: Budget (Less than £6.0m), Midpriced (£6.0m – £7.5m), and Premium (£8.0m and above). Today, we’ll delve into the Premium FPL midfielders, providing insights to help you build a formidable team.

Premium FPL Midfielders Analysis
Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) – MID, Liverpool – 33.4% TSB
- 23/24 vs CHE (A), 5 pts, 1A
- 22/23 vs FUL (A), 12 pts, 1G+1A
- 21/22 vs NOR (A), 17 pts, 1G+2A
- 20/21 vs LEE (H), 20 pts, 3G
- 19/20 vs NOR (H), 12 pts, 1G+1A
- 18/19 vs WHU (H), 8 pts, 1G
- 17/18 vs WAT (A), 10 pts, 1G+1A
- Mo Salah has not failed to deliver in Gameweek 1 for seven consecutive seasons.
- Before last season, Liverpool faced a newly promoted team in Gameweek 1 for four straight years, during which Salah amassed 61 points. This year, Liverpool’s Gameweek 1 opponent is promoted Ipswich Town.
Salah surpassed the 200-point mark for the seventh consecutive season. Although last season’s point total was his lowest in these seven years, it’s important to consider his playing time. When analyzing per 90-minute stats, last season was his third-best ever since returning to England.
Season | Pts | Mins Played | Goals | Assists | Pts/ 90 | GI/ 90 |
2023/24 | 211 | 2,531 | 18 | 12 | 7.5 | 1.1 |
2022/23 | 239 | 3,290 | 19 | 13 | 6.5 | 0.9 |
2021/22 | 265 | 2,758 | 23 | 14 | 8.6 | 1.2 |
2020/21 | 231 | 3,077 | 22 | 6 | 6.8 | 0.8 |
2019/20 | 233 | 2,879 | 19 | 10 | 7.3 | 0.9 |
2018/19 | 259 | 3,254 | 22 | 12 | 7.2 | 0.9 |
2017/18 | 303 | 2,905 | 32 | 12 | 9.4 | 1.4 |
Liverpool possibly has the best fixtures between GW1 and GW6
Hence Salah should be considered not just as a player in your squad, but also a captaincy candidate for GW1 when Haaland faces Chelsea
Watch out
- Arne Slot’s move to Liverpool presents a significant challenge as he transitions from the Eredivisie to the Premier League, known for its superior physicality and quality. He’s now in a new country with unfamiliar players, far from the comfort of Feyenoord. Just as Ten Hag faced a steep adjustment period, Slot may also need time to replicate his success in this demanding new environment.
- Jürgen Klopp’s departure is bound to affect Liverpool’s performance. History shows that replacing a legendary manager is tough; Manchester United has struggled since Sir Alex Ferguson left, and Arsenal hasn’t won the league since Arsène Wenger’s departure. Arne Slot will likely face similar challenges at Liverpool?
- After analyzing how Feyenoord play under his guidance, Athletic reporter Andy Jones hinted why Salah might struggle under Slot. Slot prefers his right-wingers to act more as playmakers and slot in the half-space behind the striker and the playmaker – which is not a role that Salah may be suited to. He said “He wants a flexible front three. He likes a ball carrying left-winger who can come inside, and you look at Luis Diaz and that’s exactly what he is, really. Cody Gakpo is similar. On the right, he’s a little bit different in that he wants his right-winger to drift in a little bit and almost become a second No.10. So when you look at Mohamed Salah, his ball-carrying abilities have decreased dramatically. And [with his] take-on success, that might suit him a little bit better if he isn’t needing to beat his man all the time.”

Cole Palmer (£10.5m) – MID, Chelsea – 55.0% TSB
The highest scorer of last season and the player with the biggest price rise in FPL history, Cole Palmer, is currently the second-most-selected player. Chelsea has amazing fixtures following the acid test of GW1.
Palmer is expected to be moved to a more central position under Enzo Maresca. Maresca’s central midfielders rack up impressive numbers. Last season in the Championship, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was ranked:
- 2nd for xA
- 3rd for assists
- 3rd for Big Chances Created
Palmer should be high on your watchlist, especially from GW2 onwards.
Watch out
- Palmer massively exceeded his underlying stats last season
Stats 23/24 | xG | G | xGI | GI | xA | A | xPts | Pts |
Cole Palmer | 17.35 | 22 | 25.5 | 35 | 8.17 | 13 | 190.98 | 244 |
Data from FFHUB – Subscribe(50% off) for OPTA Stats, AI Team Ratings, FDR , Predicted pts & More
- Nkunku was RB Leipzig’s penalty taker before moving to Chelsea. Will he share penalty-taking duties with Palmer?
- The same argument about Slot will hold true for Maresca too. Although the country will not be new for him, stepping up a division, especially under the tumultuous tenure of Boehly, might be a different challenge compared to managing Leicester under the more stable ownership of the Srivaddhanaprabhas.
- Michu, Charlie Adam, Wilfried Bony, Stuart Dallas – we have seen our fair share of first and only season wonders in FPL.

Bukayo Saka (£10.0m) – MID, Arsenal – 26.4% TSB
Arsenal’s talisman could have been the 2nd highest FPL scorer last season had he not been philanthropic with penalties. 226 points for a £8.5m asset is still a decent ROI. Among midfielders, Saka was ranked
- 1st for xA
- 2nd for xPts
- 2nd for xGI
- 3rd for FPL points
- 3rd for Goal Involvements
- 3rd for BPS
- 3rd for xG
- 3rd for Shots
- 3rd for Shots in the Box
Saka should be at the forefront of Arteta’s title charge again this season and most FPL teams as well.
Watchout
- Arsenal has a nightmarish opening fixture till GW5
- Saka’s hefty price tag puts a tiny seed of doubt in my mind
Saka over the years | Price (in £) | FPL points | Pts/ mn |
23/24 | 8.5 | 226 | 26.59 |
22/23 | 8 | 202 | 25.25 |
21/22 | 6.5 | 179 | 27.54 |
If he must live up to his past efficiency, Saka must return between 250-275 points. Possible? Certainly, but are there better value picks?
Pre-season update: Saka made his first appearance in pre-season vs Bayer Leverkusen playing 45 mins(1st half), he should be ready to start GW1.

Son Heung-min (£10.0m) – MID, Spurs – 9.2% TSB
Son has had three 200-point hauls in the last 4 seasons. However, he has the least ownership among players priced £10.0m and above and second least among players priced £8.0m and above (least being KDB for obvious reasons). That coincidentally makes him a differential now (less than 10% owned). It’s insane when you consider that he has scored more than Salah and just 4 less than Haaland (both more than 33% owned) last season.
Son has amazing fixtures in the first two weeks. So, he should be a strong contender for GW1 team.
Solanke is also set to move to Spurs and Son going to the LW position with a striker could be beneficial for him as we have seen in the past.
Watchout
- Spurs lost steam towards the end of the season winning just 2 of their last 7 matches (GW 33-38) – both against now relegated squads.
- Son’s form also tapered off in line during that period.
Son – 23/24 | GW1-32 | GW33-38 |
App | 28 | 7 |
Mins | 2350 | 596 |
Goals | 15 | 2 |
Assists | 9 | 1 |
Points | 185 | 28 |
Points/ App | 6.6 | 4.0 |
Points/ 90 | 7.1 | 4.2 |
Data from FFHUB – Subscribe(50% off) for OPTA Stats, AI Team Ratings, FDR, Predicted pts & More
- In GW3 and GW4, Son faces Newcastle and Arsenal – 2 of the 5 teams who handed Spurs defeats in those last 7 matches.

Phil Foden (£9.5m) – MID, Man City – 32.6% TSB
The breakthrough campaign for Foden finally came last season. Last season, among MF, Foden was ranked:
- 1st for BPS
- 2nd for FPL points
- 2nd for Bonus
- 2nd for Shots on Target
- 2nd for Goals
GW2 onwards, Foden’s fixtures are amazing
But Foden’s biggest achievement was probably to beat the Pep Roulette. In the league, he has the highest appearances and second-highest starts & minutes as a Man City player.
A nailed starter for the champions who has exhibited FPL potential in the past and having those fixtures – gives enough reason why Foden should be in most FPL teams
Watchout
- Foden had a forgettable Euro outing where he barely made any impact.
- Foden significantly outperformed his underlying stats last season.
Stats 23/24 | xG | G | xGI | GI | xA | A | xPts | Pts |
Phil Foden | 10.17 | 19 | 17.1 | 27 | 6.95 | 8 | 168.07 | 230 |
- Foden will not feature for Man City on their pre-season tour. So, it is worth monitoring news regarding his availability.
3 more midfielders are priced above £8.0m – Kevin De Bruyne, Martin Ødegaard and Bruno Fernandes. I’ll give a snapshot of why I will stay away from them at least for the initial few GWs. They are excellent assets no doubt, but I see more value elsewhere.
Pre-season update: Manchester City will be without England trio Kyle Walker, John Stones and Phil Foden for the fixture, as well as Spain midfielder Rodri, revealed Guardiola during his pre-match press conference. It’s highly unlikely that Foden will be ready to start GW1.

Kevin De Bruyne
- £9.5m is too high a tag to pay for someone who has not crossed the 200-point barrier in the last 4 seasons.
- Unlike Foden, he is not nailed anymore
Pre-season update:
KDB was back in training & should be ready for the season start.

Martin Ødegaard
- Ødegaard had a much deeper role last season as evident from his underlying stats. This has also reported in lesser output from the Danish international
Ødegaard | Pts | Goals | Assists | xG | xA | GI | xGI |
2023/24 | 186 | 8 | 11 | 7.53 | 10.16 | 19 | 17.69 |
2022/23 | 212 | 15 | 8 | 9.75 | 8.02 | 23 | 17.77 |
- If Ødegaard has a similar role like last season, he is an AVOID in my opinion.
- Ødegaard’s 22/23 exploits were also because of his outperformance of his xG – something he failed to do in 23/24.

Bruno Fernandes
- Among midfielders, Fernandes was ranked 1st for Key Passes, 1st for Big Chances Created, 2nd for xA…however 17th for Assists; implying the poor finishing of Utd frontmen. Can Zirkzee be the answer to Utd’s finishing woes? I am not so sure
- Although his first two fixtures have FDR of 2 each, they are against teams (FUL and BHA) which are in the Bottom Half for Goals Conceded. So the fixtures won’t be easy in reality
